Vaginal delivery, as known today, is a still unfinished product that originated hundreds of million years ago, much before mammals evolved on land. In this article, we will discuss the way in which our direct ancestors were born over the eons until the present day, focusing on the factors that presented substantial changes in how birth occurred, in relation to our earlier ancestors. The history begins with the first amniotes around 300 million years ago and ends with the appearance of the first Homo sapiens around 160,000 years ago.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out from January to December 2006 with 495 women who had a normal delivery at the Maternity Center Monteiro de Moraes Integrated Health Amaury de Medeiros (CISAM) University of Pernambuco. Assessed factors were issues preceeding birth, characteristics of labor and perinatal outcome.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of cesarean sections in Brazilian hospitals.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with data from the World Health Organization's Global Data System for Maternal and Perinatal Health, for the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Pernambuco and the Federal District. Data relating to 15,354 women who gave birth between September/2004 and March/2005 were analyzed, according to sociodemographic, reproductive, and hospital-related characteristics.
Purpose: to determine factors associated to amniotic fluid volume and frequencies of fetal anomalies, in a reference center in Pernambuco.
Methods: a transversal study performed in high-risk pregnant women submitted to obstetrical morphological ultrasound, from March 2002 to March 2006, at an institution from Recife, Pernambuco, Brasil. The intrauterine diagnosis was confirmed after birth.
