Male sex is a risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC) with higher illness burden and earlier onset. Thus, we hypothesized that loss of chromosome Y (LOY) in the tumor micro-environment (TME) might be involved in oncogenesis. Previous studies show that LOY in circulating leukocytes of aging men was associated with shorter survival and non-hematological cancer, as well as higher LOY in CD4 + T-lymphocytes in men with prostate cancer vs.

Article Synopsis
  • DRESS syndrome is a rare and serious hypersensitivity reaction that affects the skin and internal organs, especially the kidneys, typically occurring 2 to 8 weeks after starting certain medications, including antiepileptics and allopurinol.
  • Two case reports highlight patients experiencing severe symptoms, including kidney injury and skin lesions, following drug use; both improved after stopping the medications and starting steroid treatment.
  • Diagnosis of DRESS can be challenging due to its varied symptoms, making thorough evaluation of symptoms, drug history, and lab results crucial for effective treatment.

BACKGROUND The study aim was to assess the prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress, and insomnia among resident doctors in Poland during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIAL AND METHODS The online anonymous survey was conducted among Polish resident doctors attending obligatory specialization courses organized by the Center of Postgraduate Medical Education between 2020 and 2021. The psychological impact of COVID-19 was measured using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21).

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a key role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), but the influence of triiodothyronine (T3) on the biological regulation of CSCs remains unclear. In the present study, it was reported that T3 exerts significant impact on CSCs of two CRC cell lines cultured in the form of colonospheres. It was observed that the incubation of colonospheres with T3 decreased the viability, proliferative and spherogenic potential of cancer cells (P<0.

Antibiotic resistance (ABR) is at the top of global health threats. This paper aims to assess Polish physicians' readiness to impact ABR through prescribing routines. Surveying Polish physicians participating in specialization courses at the Center for Postgraduate Medical Education in Warsaw, Poland from October 2019 to March 2020.

Objective: To compare the effect of RYGB and OAGB on patients after failed treatment of obesity by laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).

Study Design: A case-control study based on a prospectively maintained database of reoperated patients after failed LSG, which included 33 patients who underwent RYGB conversion and 47 patients who underwent OAGB conversion.

Result: The mean %EBWL after a 5-year follow-up for RYGBc vs OAGBc was 84.

The progress in translational cancer research relies on access to well-characterized samples from a representative number of patients and controls. The rationale behind our biobanking are explorations of post-zygotic pathogenic gene variants, especially in non-tumoral tissue, which might predispose to cancers. The targeted diagnoses are carcinomas of the breast (via mastectomy or breast conserving surgery), colon and rectum, prostate, and urinary bladder (via cystectomy or transurethral resection), exocrine pancreatic carcinoma as well as metastases of colorectal cancer to the liver.

Background Vitamin D deficiency occurs in as much as 90-95% of the Polish population, although this condition is known to cause negative long-term health implications. The role of medical doctors in advising proper supplementation, monitoring and correcting the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in individuals is of great importance and should be used to help mitigate its common deficits. The aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge, attitudes and practices of Polish physicians regarding vitamin D supplementation in order to identify areas for improvement and determinants for the knowledge gaps.

Background: Accumulating evidence indicates alterations in lipid metabolism and lipid composition in neoplastic tissue. Earlier nuclear magnetic resonance studies showed that the contents of major lipid groups, such as triacylglycerols, phospholipids and cholesterol, are changed in colon cancer tissue.

Methods: In this study, a more detailed analysis of lipids in cancer and tumor adjacent tissues from colorectal cancer patients, using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, allowed for comparison of 199 different lipids between cancer tissue and tumor adjacent tissue using principal component analysis.

Purpose: Obesity is associated with alterations in serum fatty acid profiles. One-anastomosis gastric bypass is a type of bariatric surgery used in the treatment of morbid obesity. The aim of this study was to establish if, between 6 and 9 months after this procedure, the fatty acid composition in the serum of patients normalizes to values similar to the healthy, lean population.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is often diagnosed at an advanced stage due to the invasiveness of colonoscopy; thus, non-invasive CRC diagnostics are desirable. CRC is associated with lipid alterations. We aimed to verify whether fatty acid (FA) profiles in CRC patients may serve as a potential diagnostic tool for CRC diagnosis.

Vaccination is one of the most useful preventive interventions in healthcare. The purpose of our study was to gain overview of the opinions, knowledge, and engagement in vaccination practices among medical students (MS) and junior doctors (JD) in Europe. The survey was distributed from March 2016 until August 2016 via the e-mail and social media of the European Medical Students' Association.

We would like to demonstrate the difficulty of treatment in a patient after kidney transplantation (KTX) who developed chronic urinary tract infection (UTI) with a multi-drug resistant ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. The patient underwent several treatment interventions including supportive therapy with bacteriophages. This article presents a case of a 60-year-old patient after KTX repeatedly admitted to the hospital with recurrent UTIs caused by ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae showing variable susceptibility to carbapenems and full susceptibility to colistin only.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common bacterial infections among kidney transplant (KTX) recipients. The purpose of this study was to analyze antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in four most common pathogens responsible for UTIs in KTX recipients and determine risk factors (RF) for resistance in the same group. Analyzed antibiograms were based on urine samples positive for bacterial growth of 10 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL obtained from hospitalized adult KTX recipients presenting with UTI symptoms upon admission to the center in years 2011-2018.

Introduction: Hand hygiene (HH) is often under-discussed in clinical work, but it is hard to overestimate its role in preventing health care associated infections (HCAIs), especially among immunocompromised populations such as transplant patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the compliance of doctors in transplant departments in Poland with HH and other selected infection control measures.

Material And Methods: An on-line cross-sectional survey was carried out among doctors from all Polish transplant departments listed by POLTRANSPLANT.

Background: Subjects with morbid obesity have low levels of serum branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs), which correlate inversely with insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia, and inflammation. Recent evidence suggests BCFAs are produced during branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism in human adipose tissue. Elevated concentrations of BCAAs are associated with insulin resistance.

Background/aim: Fatty acid synthase (FASN) provides palmitate for cell membrane formation in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, however, palmitate is also available in the blood of CRC patients. The aim of this study was to examine whether orlistat, a FASN inhibitor, is able to attenuate CRC cell growth despite the availability of extracellular palmitate.

Materials And Methods: Palmitate concentrations were measured in serum from CRC patients and healthy controls.
