Article Synopsis
  • - The rising issue of antibiotic resistance (ABR) necessitates efficient testing methods to guide effective antibiotic treatments.
  • - The text explores the use of laser light scattering (LLS) in creating miniaturized systems for quick ABR testing in microbiological labs, specifically through integration into a lab-on-a-chip format.
  • - Experimental results reveal that LLS can rapidly assess the impact of antibiotics on microorganisms, achieving results in as little as 10 minutes, highlighting its potential for next-gen diagnostic tools.

Chromonic liquid crystals are formed by the addition of aromatic molecules such as disodium chromoglycate (cromolyn) to water. In this study, we investigate the addition of salts to the lyotropic nematic phase of cromolyn aqueous solutions. The addition of sodium and potassium salts shifts the isotropic-nematic phase boundary upward by more than 10 degrees C, so that samples that were isotropic at room temperature are transformed into nematic phases.
