Coronary artery calcification on routine CT has prognostic and treatment implications for all ages.

Aims: Guidelines have recommended reporting coronary artery calcification (CAC) if present on chest CT imaging regardless of indication. This study assessed CAC prevalence, prognosis and the potential clinical impact of its reporting.

Methods: We performed a single-centre retrospective analysis (January-December 2015) of 1400 chest CTs (200 consecutive within each age group: <40, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80-89, ≥90).

Myocardial oedema in the setting of immersion pulmonary oedema - Cause or effect?

Immersion pulmonary oedema (IPE) is an under-reported and poorly understood phenomenon thought to be related to exercise-induced haemodynamic changes while submersed in water. Previous work has demonstrated reversible myocardial dysfunction during acute episodes. We present a case of IPE with concomitant, transient, left ventricular myocardial oedema characterised via MRI.

Provision of magnetic resonance imaging for patients with 'MR-conditional' cardiac implantable electronic devices: an unmet clinical need.

Aims: Increasing need for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has driven the development of MR-conditional cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs; pacemakers and defibrillators); however, patients still report difficulties obtaining scans. We sought to establish current provision for MRI scanning of patients with CIEDs in England.

Methods And Results: A survey was distributed to all hospitals in England with MRI, to assess current practice.

TriLoNet: Piecing Together Small Networks to Reconstruct Reticulate Evolutionary Histories.

Phylogenetic networks are a generalization of evolutionary trees that can be used to represent reticulate processes such as hybridization and recombination. Here, we introduce a new approach called TriLoNet (Trinet Level- one Network algorithm) to construct such networks directly from sequence alignments which works by piecing together smaller phylogenetic networks. More specifically, using a bottom up approach similar to Neighbor-Joining, TriLoNet constructs level-1 networks (networks that are somewhat more general than trees) from smaller level-1 networks on three taxa.

Future housing plans and funding for the care of older people.

The Government recently launched a housing strategy for older people, which promises more inclusive housing and community design. Yet more needs to be done to ensure the strategy makes a real difference to older people's lives. Joe Oldman explains the situation for The British Journal of Community Nursing.

Using habitat suitability index and particle dispersion models for early detection of marine invaders.

Eradication and control of invasive species are often possible only if populations are detected when they are small and localized. To be efficient, detection surveys should be targeted at locations where there is the greatest risk of incursions. We examine the utility of habitat suitability index (HSI) and particle dispersion models for targeting sampling for marine pests.

A case report of the conversion of sheltered employment to evidence-based supported employment in Canada.

This case report describes the transformation of a sheltered workshop program to a program that provides evidence-based supported employment services in partnership with five community treatment teams. Over a 15-year period, a Canadian nonprofit agency that provides employment services for persons with severe mental illness made a series of programmatic changes to increase the effectiveness of the services. The agency initially modified its facility-based sheltered workshop to include a prevocationally oriented work preparation program, later added brokered supported employment services, and finally completely transformed its organization by relocating its vocational rehabilitation counselors to five community mental health teams, in order to implement an evidence-based supported employment program that is based on the individual placement and support model.
