The fibula is the preferred bone flap for mandibular reconstructions due to its many advantages, including the possibility to insert dental implants. All patients who received a mandibular reconstruction with a vascularized free fibula flap at the Uppsala University Hospital between 2009 and 2019 were retrospectively examined regarding the proportion of implant insertion and factors that affected implant outcome. Forty-one patients had 42 fibula flap reconstructions.

Indices of carbohydrate quality featuring various ratios of carbohydrates-to-dietary fibre-to-sugar have been associated with improved product and/or diet quality in westernised countries. Carbohydrate intake is especially high in Asia Pacific.

The effect of buffer strip width and selective logging on streamside plant communities.

Background: Riparian forests surrounding streams host high biodiversity values, but are threatened by clear-cut logging. Narrow buffer strips of about 15 m are commonly left between the stream and the clear-cut, but studies suggest that the buffer width should be at least 30 m to protect riparian plant communities. Moreover, selective logging is often allowed on the buffer strips in order to increase economic gain.

Grazing and abandonment determine different tree dynamics in wood-pastures.

Wood-pastures are threatened biotopes in which trees and livestock grazing maintain high conservation values. However, browsing may threaten tree regeneration, whereas abandonment leads to tree encroachment. We studied the regeneration of trees in a grazed and abandoned boreal wood-pastures.

Researching the lived experiences of cancer patients with malignant fungating wounds.

Background: Researching the experiences of terminally ill patients with disfiguring wounds is likely to be a challenge anywhere, and this investigation came face-to-face with different attitudes on the part of both patients and nurses and doctors in England (the South-East) and Italy (Tuscany).

Aim: To highlight the complexity of researching sensitive subjects and the difficulties encountered from the perspective of the researcher(s).

Methods: Some 14 patients were interviewed.

Green-tree retention is a forest management method in which some living trees are left on a logged area. The aim is to offer 'lifeboats' to support species immediately after logging and to provide microhabitats during and after forest re-establishment. Several studies have shown immediate decline in bryophyte diversity after retention logging and thus questioned the effectiveness of this method, but longer term studies are lacking.

Meeting the nutritional needs of elderly residents in aged-care: are we doing enough?

Objectives: [corrected] Institutionalized elderly are at high risk of malnutrition, including those residing in low-level aged-care and able to self-feed. We used comprehensive dietary intake assessments to determine the nutritional adequacy of food served to residents and if food waste contributed to insufficient nutrient intakes.

Context: To provide effective palliative care (PC) to the geriatric population, an understanding of the reasons for consultation, main diagnoses related to referral, and symptom severity in chronic disease states is essential.

Objectives: We compared the baseline characteristics, referral patterns, and symptom severity among older and younger patients referred for inpatient PC consultation.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 2382 inpatient PC consultations.

Introduction: Malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) complicate many advanced malignancies and the median prognosis for those who develop MPEs is 6 months. These effusions lead patients to suffer from significant dyspnea, which may consequently impair mobility and lead to reduced quality of life. There are several treatment options for those with MPE.

Evaluation of a required palliative care rotation for internal medicine residents.

Introduction: Internal medicine programs are now required to integrate palliative care into teaching conferences, and palliative care content is already tested on the American Board of Internal Medicine examination. Previous research has focused on integration of palliative care into existing rotations and seminars, but none has studied a required inpatient palliative care rotation.

Objective: We evaluate the impact of a required palliative care rotation for internal medicine residents in four domains: pain management, non-pain symptom management, communication/ethics, and terminal care.
