MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in regulating flowering and reproduction of angiosperms. Mature miRNAs are encoded by multiple MIRNA genes that can differ in their spatiotemporal activities and their contributions to gene regulatory networks, but the functions of individual MIRNA genes are poorly defined. We functionally analyzed the activity of all 5 Arabidopsis thaliana MIR172 genes, which encode miR172 and promote the floral transition by inhibiting the accumulation of APETALA2 (AP2) and APETALA2-LIKE (AP2-LIKE) transcription factors (TFs).

The U-Clip (Coalescent Surgical, Sunnydale, CA USA) allows the surgeon to create an interrupted anastomosis in the same amount of time that is required for a continuous anastomosis with the elimination of knotting. Its use is indicated especially in minimally invasive surgery. We describe a case of a patient in which the proximal anastomosis was performed by interrupted suture with Coalescent U-Clip anastomotic device.

Long-term predictors of mortality and functional recovery after aortic valve replacement for severe aortic stenosis with left ventricular dysfunction.

Introduction And Objectives: At present, surgery is the only recommended effective treatment for severe aortic stenosis. However, the surgical risk is increased when left ventricular dysfunction is present. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of postoperative and long-term mortality and functional improvement after valve replacement in patients with severe aortic stenosis and left ventricular dysfunction.

Aortoesophageal fistula: an uncommon complication after stent-graft repair of an aortic thoracic aneurysm.

Objectives: To report the incidence and management of aortoesophageal fistula (AEF) secondary to endovascular stent-graft repair of the descending thoracic aorta.

Methods: We analyze a case of AEF as a late complication of stent-graft repair of a thoracic aortic aneurysm in a 74-year-old male. We also include a discussion on alternatives of treatment based on a review of the literature currently available in MEDLINE.

Introduction: In order to improve the prognosis, repair of severe mitral regurgitation should be undertaken at the same time as aortic valve replacement in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis. However, mitral regurgitation may be secondary to pressure overload or ventricular dysfunction and improve after surgery.

We describe three symptomatic patients with severe stenosis of the proximal anastomosis several months after using the Symmetry aortic connector system.

Transfusion of post-operative shed blood: laboratory characteristics and clinical utility.

Increased awareness of the potential hazards of allogenic blood transfusion, such as incompatibility reactions, metabolic and immunologic disorders, or transmission of viral diseases, has led to an emphasis on allogeneic blood alternatives. For orthopaedic surgery, several autologous transfusion modalities have emerged as alternatives to allogeneic blood transfusion, avoiding its immunomodulatory effects. Among them, transfusion or return of post-operative salvaged shed blood has become popular in major orthopaedic procedures.

Acute phase response in patients undergoing lumbar spinal surgery: modulation by perioperative treatment with naproxen and famotidine.

In orthopaedic surgery, perioperative administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs has been shown to reduce postoperative pain and analgesic consumption. In addition, preoperative administration of ibuprofen has proved to reduce interleukin-6 (IL-6) release, while that of ranitidine reduced postoperative IL-6-induced C-reactive protein synthesis in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. However, it has not been established whether the preoperative administration of both types of drugs may reduced the postoperative inflammatory reaction after instrumented spinal surgery.

We describe the case of a patient in whom two-dimensional echocardiography, performed due to dissociated cholestasis and jugular ingurgitation, demonstrated a huge mass in the right atrium which prolapsed in the right ventricle. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography was performed to further assess the dimension and characteristics of the mass and to discard the involvement of associated structures. The patient underwent a cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and the mass (12 * 5 cm) was removed without complications.

We describe a new technique for aortic valvuloplasty in four patients. The balloon catheter was inserted percutaneously from the right femoral vein over a long guidewire introduced into the right femoral vein and advanced transseptally to the left atrium and left ventricle and drawn out of the body through the left femoral artery using an intravascular retriever set. With both ends of the long guidewire under manual control outside the body, the balloon could be easily fixed during inflation.
