Unlabelled: Estrogen hormone dependence accounts for a major cause in the incidence of women breast cancer. ER- is the major ER subtype in the mammary epithelium and plays a critical role in breast cancer progression. Tamoxifen (1-[4-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy)-phenyl]-1,2- diphenylbut-1(Z)-ene) is a nonsteroidal antiestrogen prodrug which formed pharmacologically active metabolite, 4-hydroxytamoxifen, largely used for endocrine therapy in pre and postmenopausal women with ER-positive breast cancer.

The essential properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), such as chemical inertness and durability that make it a suitable material for the packaging of mineral and soft drinks, have led to it becoming a major environmental pollutant and a threat to the planet. Ecologically friendly solutions such as bioremediation are now being advocated for by scientists. This paper, therefore, seeks to explore the potential capacity of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus pulmonarius in biodegrading PET plastic on two different substrates (soil and rice straw).

Context: Cussonia arborea Hochst. ex A. Rich (Araliaceae) is a folk medicine used to treat various diseases.

Evaluation of CYP2D6 phenotype in the Yoruba Nigerian population.

Background: There is a lack of information on CYP2D6, a major metabolizing enzyme, in Africa ethnic nationalities. The objective was to determine CYP2D6 phenotype in Yoruba Nigerians using dextromethorphan (DEX).

Method: A total of 89 healthy volunteers received 30 mg of DEX orally followed by blood and urine sample collection at 3-hour and over 8 h post-dose, respectively.

New α-glucosidase inhibiting anthracenone from the barks of Harungana madagascariensis Lam.

Two new 10-hydroxy-9(10H)-anthracenone, madagascenone A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the barks of Harungana madagascariensis Lam. The structures of the compounds were determined using 1D- and 2D-NMR and mass spectroscopic techniques. Both of the compounds showed an in vitro α-glucosidase inhibition with IC = 69.

Chemical constituents of Allophylus africanus.

Four new compounds, alloeudesmenol (1), hanocokinoside (3), allotaraxerolide (4), and alloaminoacetaldehyde (5), together with two known compound, stigmastane-3β,4β-diol (2) and pinitol 6 (a and b) were isolated and identified from the whole plant of Allophylus africanus.

Non-competitive inhibition of acetylcholinesterase by bromotyrosine alkaloids.

Fifteen bromotyrosine-derived alkaloids were isolated from the sponge Pseudoceratina cf. purpurea. The acetylcholinesterase-inhibiting activity of all the isolated compounds were examined; to purealidin Q, isoanomoian A, aplyzanzine A, and aplysamine 2 were active with IC50 values of 1.

The anti-malarial potential of different parts of Allophylus africanus P. Beauv and Tragia benthamii Baker were determined in vivo for suppressive, curative and cytotoxic activities in mice receiving 0.2 mL of a standard inoculum size of 1 × 10(7) infected erythrocytes of Plasmodium berghei (NK-65) intraperitoneally.
