Chronic itch conditions are often accompanied by neural itch sensitization, known as hyperknesis (excessive itch induced by stimuli that would normally induce only mild itching or pain) and alloknesis (considerable itch evoked by light tactile stimuli). Herpes zoster (shingles) can cause neuropathic itch (postherpetic itch), although it is unknown whether hyperknesis accompanies postherpetic itch. The authors report five patients with postherpetic itch who showed increased touch-evoked itch (punctate hyperknesis) in the affected skin areas compared with the contralateral site.

Background: Cancer newly developed in the remnant stomach (CRS) after partial gastrectomy is worthy of attention not only because it is a typical model of carcinogenesis but also from the aspect of cancer diagnosis.

Methods: We treated 47 patients with CRS in the 20 years from 1979 to 1998. Clinicopathological variables, as well as long-term survival results after the second surgery, were reviewed to clarify whether there were any differences in the characteristics of this disease entity compared with the usual primary gastric cancer.

Dendritic cells (DC) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells that induce specific anti-tumor immunity. To obtain potent efficacy of immunotherapy using infusion of activated DC, it is necessary to overcome defective function of DC in tumor-bearing patients. We examined whether the treatment with PSK, a biological response modifier derived from Basidiomycetes, could allow DC to avoid inhibition of functional maturation by tumor-derived factors in vitro.

We report the case of a 72-year-old male with Stage IV gastric cancer accompanied by multiple liver metastases and carcinomatous ascites which responded to chemotherapy using TS-1. Treatment of the patient with daily oral administration of 120 mg TS-1 for 4 weeks resulted in complete regression of the liver metastases and ascites, as well as a 35% reduction in the size of the primary lesion. After 2 cycles, the primary tumor size was reduced to 55% and serum CA19-9 and CA125 levels were decreased to the normal ranges.

A retrospective analysis was performed on 11 patients (mean age 50 years), consisting of 8 men and 3 women, with a stasis ulcer due to varix cruris who underwent sclerotherapy with a ligation of incompetent veins on an outpatient basis. The follow-up ranged from 26 to 76 months (mean 53 months). The ulcers healed in 14 to 128 days (mean 41 days) after this procedure except in 1 patient.
