The host innate immune response, including the production of type-I IFN, represents the primary line of defense against invading viral pathogens. Of the hundreds of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) discovered to date, ISG15 was one of the first identified and shown to encode a ubiquitin-like protein that functions, in part, as a modifier of protein function. Evidence implicating ISG15 as an innate immune protein with broad-spectrum antiviral activity continues to accumulate rapidly.

Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) is a recently clinicoradiologically-established encephalopathy syndrome. In the present study, we examined the levels of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tau protein, a marker of axonal damage, in 11 patients with AESD. CSF tau levels were normal on day 1 and increased from day 3 of the disease between the initial and the secondary seizures.

We present the first patient to develop drug eruption due to intravesical instillations of both epirubicin and mitomycin C. A 58-year-old-man underwent transurethral resection (TUR) for superficial bladder carcinoma followed by instillations of intravesical chemotherapy. Immediately after TUR, the first instillation of epirubicin was performed.

We reported a girl with HHV-6 infection associated with both acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion, and hemophagocytic syndrome. She had a prolonged convulsion after a one-day history of febrile illness. Cerebrospinal fluid or brain CT showed no abnormalities on admission and her consciousness was recovered on the next day.

We report a case of a 35-year-old patient with acute pancreatitis after administration of ceftriaxone. She was given ceftriaxone (2g/day) for 9 days because of diverticulitis of the colon. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are highly energetic explosions signaling the death of massive stars in distant galaxies. The Gamma-ray Burst Monitor and Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi Observatory together record GRBs over a broad energy range spanning about 7 decades of gammaray energy. In this study, we examined the potential roles of hepatocytes in regulating immune responses in the liver, by assessing the induction of Th1- or Th2-specific chemokines in HepG2 cells after various inflammatory stimulations.

We continuously monitored clustered seizures using single-channel amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) in a 6-month-old girl with probable benign partial epilepsy in infancy (BPEI). The patient was admitted with clustered seizures, and aEEG using three disposable electrodes was started by a non-expert pediatrician. During the recording, seven seizures were detected.

A reciprocal translocation involving chromosomes 8 and 21 generates the AML1/ETO oncogenic transcription factor that initiates acute myeloid leukemia by recruiting co-repressor complexes to DNA. AML1/ETO interferes with the function of its wild-type counterpart, AML1, by directly targeting AML1 binding sites. However, transcriptional regulation determined by AML1/ETO probably relies on a more complex network, since the fusion protein has been shown to interact with a number of other transcription factors, in particular E-proteins, and may therefore target other sites on DNA.

The gene encoding a novel extrinsic protein (Psb31) found in Photosystem II (PSII) of a diatom, Chaetoceros gracilis, was cloned and sequenced. The deduced protein contained three characteristic leader sequences targeted for chloroplast endoplasmic reticulum membrane, chloroplast envelope membrane and thylakoid membrane, indicating that Psb31 is encoded in the nuclear genome and constitutes one of the extrinsic proteins located on the lumenal side. Homologous genes were found in a red alga and chromophytic algae but not in other organisms.
