Infection with human cytomegaly virus (CMV) may lead to liver damage in immunocompromised individuals. Chronic hepatitis C is featured by impairment of innate and specific immunity as well apoptotic cell death. The aim of the study was to assess to frequency of CMV infection in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

This condition has been extensively investigated in animal models with high glucose levels. Nevertheless, it has not been investigated whether moderate hyperglycemia, in the absence of other features of metabolic syndrome, may also cause similar changes in the heart.

Materials And Methods: In HD patients with and without PVH and in controls we compared the markers of: coagulation pathway- tissue factor (TF) and its inhibitor (TFPI), prothrombin fragment F (1+2) (F (1+2)); fibrinolysis: tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA), urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its soluble receptor (suPAR), plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), plasmin/antiplasmin complexes (PAP); and a marker of SOX-Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) levels.
Results: Patients, particularly those with PVH, showed a significant increase in the markers of the coagulation, fibrinolysis and oxidative status as compared to controls.
SEN virus (SENV) is a new, mostly parenterally transmitted, hepatotropic agent. The prevalence of SENV among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD) in Poland, as well as risk factors for the infection are not established. Serum samples of 91 patients receiving maintenance HD in Białystok were tested for the presence of strain H SENV (SENV-H) DNA by means of polymerase chain reaction.

We measured the levels of immunoreactive HGF in unstimulated whole mixed saliva from 26 patients referred for treatment of periodontal disease, and from 20 healthy subjects. HGF was detected in all saliva samples from the patients, the concentration ranging from 0.

Infection with HCV was detected in 3 out of 64 examined patients (4.7%) and in 64 of 14 098 blood donors (0.

The study objective was to prospectively determine the etiology of infection among adults exposed to tick bite and to detect acute human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), a recently emerging infection, in north-eastern Poland. We evaluated 68 patients (34 males and 34 females, mean age 44.

Method: Using a structured questionnaire, all patients with confirmed HCV infection were interviewed about the risk factors.
Results: Among the 250 patients studied, transfusion before 1993 was the primary risk factor in 26%, intravenous drug use setting in 9% and occupational exposure in health-care in 9%.
The complex interactions between cancer and host cells are far from being fully elucidated. Assessment of Th1/Th2/Th3/Tr1 balance is an interesting approach to explain immunological disturbances in lymphomas. The aim of our study was to assess mRNA for pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in T-cells in 20 children with Hodgkin- and non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

It has been found that the level of expression of some members of this large family correlates with invasiveness of some malignant tumors. GLUT1 is an example of the most often studied and best known members of GLUT receptors.

The study involved 36 patients with colorectal cancer at different stages of the disease progression and with different histopathologic grading. Mutations of codon 12 of K-RAS gene investigated using PCR-RFLP technique were found in 15 patients (41.
