Premedical Student Interest in and Exposure to Dermatology at Howard University.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey study of premedical undergraduate students at Howard University (Washington, DC), to evaluate the level of interest that underrepresented in medicine (UiM) premedical students have in the field of dermatology. The 19-question survey assessed student knowledge, opinions, and exposure to dermatology. Dermatology is an area of great interest for UiM premedical students that has few avenues available for exposure and learning.

Effectiveness of Yoruba language radio jingles in promoting knowledge, attitude and practices regarding Lassa fever among women in Ondo state, Nigeria.

Background: Lassa fever is one of the known Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) that plague some states in Nigeria. Radio jingles in indigenous language have been adopted as a veritable risk communication approach to promote public knowledge in the bid to reduce the incidence of Lassa fever outbreaks in Ondo state which has recorded the highest number of victims in recent times. Given the high level of women's contribution in home keeping, food storage as well as maintenance of environmental hygiene practices, their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP), is fundamental for the control of Lassa fever.

Cocaine-Induced Headache: A Review of Pathogenesis, Presentation, Diagnosis, and Management.

Cocaine is a vasoactive substance, and its consumption has increased throughout the world. There are many neurological complications caused by chronic cocaine use, which include headache, aneurysmal formation, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke (subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhage), seizures, etc. Headache is one of the most common symptoms that appear after cocaine use.

The data were generated among 582 respondents residing in suburban region of Southwest of Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states through a self-administered questionnaire.

Trends in Firearm Injuries Among Children and Teenagers in the United States.

Background: Gun violence among children and teenagers in the United States occurs at a magnitude many times that of other industrialized countries. The trends of injury in this age group relative to the adult population are not well studied. This study seeks to measure trends in pediatric firearm injuries in the United States.

Data on new media use for agricultural training and research at Agricultural Services and Training Centre (ASTC).

Data available in this survey depict new media use for agricultural training and research. The objective was to determine how favourably or unfavourably disposed the respondents were to using new media for research and training. Self-administered copies of the questionnaire were used to generate the data from 47 agricultural extension workers at ASTC, Plateau State.

Partiality, impartiality and the ethics of triage.

In this paper, I discuss the question of partiality and impartiality in the application of triage. Triage is a process in medical research which recommends that patients should be sorted for treatment according to the degree or severity of their injury. In employing the triage protocol, however, the question of partiality arises because socially vulnerable groups will be neglected since there is the likelihood that the social determinants of a patient's health may diminish her chance of survival.

Pre-pregnancy counseling in Lagos: a report on the first 1,000 cases.

Objective: To assess the activity of a pre-pregnancy counseling clinic in terms of investigations, counseling, treatment, and subsequent pregnancy outcome.

Materials And Methods: Prenatal diagnosis and therapy were given in a tertiary university hospital in Lagos offering referral services for fetal medicine.

Design: Review of the first 1,000 couples who referred to the centre from various centres attended from 1992 to 2007.

Retained fibrin sleeve: transesophageal echocardiographic observations.

The role of echocardiography for the evaluation of thrombus formation on indwelling intracardiac catheters is well established. Considerably less well described, however, are the echocardiographic characteristics of the so-called retained fibrin sheath, a sleeve of fibrin that surrounds the catheter at the point at which it enters the vein that commonly remains adherent to the vessel wall after catheter removal. The authors report the transesophageal echocardiographic findings of a retained fibrin sheath following catheter removal in a patient with end-stage renal disease and infective endocarditis of the aortic valve.

Milk bolus obstruction secondary to the early introduction of premature baby milk formula: an old syndrome re-emerging in a new population.

Milk bolus obstruction of the neonatal bowel apparently related to the use of artificial powder milk, particularly full cream cows milk, was first recognised in the late 1960s. The syndrome almost disappeared with the use of highly modified cows milk formulae but has now re-emerged in the low birth weight population with the early use of high calorific feeds specifically designed for these infants. We describe four cases of obstruction and perforation of the bowel seen on our neonatal intensive care unit in 1 calendar year and discuss the possible aetiology of this condition.

Intravenous urography and childhood trauma.

Results of intravenous urography (IVU) in 33 patients suspected of suffering from renal trauma were reviewed. It was concluded that when haematuria is only detected microscopically and clears within 24 hr then an IVU is not necessary, in the absence of other evidence of significant urinary tract injury.
