Migratory schwannoma of the cauda equina with a change in radicular pattern: illustrative case.

Observations: A 38-year-old male presented with bilateral upper lumbar radicular symptoms of anterior thigh pain, with an enhancing tumor of the cauda equina initially located at L1-2.

Minimally Invasive Far Lateral Lumbar Discectomy With Modified Technique: Symptomatic Relief and Intersegmental Stability Study.

Objective: To evaluate the use of a modified minimally invasive surgery (MIS) technique for far lateral lumbar discectomy (FLDH) that minimizes the degree of bony drilling required for nerve root decompression, increasing postoperative pain reduction rate with reduced risk of iatrogenic spinal instability.

Summary Of Background Data: FLDH accounts for approximately 10% of all lumbar disc herniations and is increasingly recognized in the era of advanced imaging techniques. These disc herniations typically result in extra-foraminal nerve root compression.

INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION FROM MECKEL'S DIVERTICULUM IN AN ADULT; UNSUSPECTED BUT FOUND- A CASE REPORT.

Introduction: Most cases of Meckel's Diverticulum (MD) are asymptomatic and when symptomatic, preoperative diagnosis of MD maybe a dilemma. Intestinal obstruction is a major complication in the adult population.

Case Presentation: We report a case of a 24-year-old female presenting with intestinal obstruction from Meckels Diverticulum.

Methods: Data were collected for 288 consecutive patients treated with craniotomy or craniectomy for evacuation of an acute or mixed-density SDH between 2012 and 2017 at 2 academic institutions.

The nonsurgical nature of patients with subarachnoid or intraparenchymal hemorrhage associated with mild traumatic brain injury.

Object: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), as defined by Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 13 or higher, is a common problem in the United States and worldwide, estimated to affect more than 1 million patients yearly. When associated with intracranial hemorrhage, it is a common reason for neurosurgical consultation and transfer to tertiary care centers. The authors set out to investigate the clinical implications of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and/or intraparenchymal hemorrhage (IPH) associated with mTBI in hopes of standardization of mTBI clinical care and optimization of resource allocation.

Neurosurgical injuries resulting from the 2011 tornados in Alabama: the experience at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center.

Object: The April 27, 2011, tornados that affected the southeastern US resulted in 248 deaths in the state of Alabama. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Medical Center, the largest Level I trauma center in the state, triaged and treated a large number of individuals who suffered traumatic injuries during these events, including those requiring neurosurgical assessment and treatment.

Methods: A retrospective review of all adult patients triaged at UAB Medical Center during the April 27, 2011, tornados was conducted.

Novel molecular signaling and classification of human clinically nonfunctional pituitary adenomas identified by gene expression profiling and proteomic analyses.

Pituitary adenomas comprise 10% of intracranial tumors and occur in about 20% of the population. They cause significant morbidity by compression of regional structures or the inappropriate expression of pituitary hormones. Their molecular pathogenesis is unclear, and the current classification of clinically nonfunctional tumors does not reflect any molecular distinctions between the subtypes.

Supraplacode spinal cord transection in paraplegic patients with myelodysplasia and repetitive symptomatic tethered spinal cord.

Object: The authors describe the technique of transecting the spinal cord in children born with myelomeningocele who have undergone multiple detherings and are functionally paraplegic.

Methods: The authors' technique involves identifying the neural placode and sectioning the normal spinal cord just superior to this site. No postoperative complications have been identified in 14 patients undergoing this procedure over an 11-year period.
