Introduction Refractive error is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness globally. Increasingly, patients are exposed to information about refractive surgery through social media advertisements. While national guidelines specify how refractive surgery should be advertised in traditional media, it is unclear to what extent these standards are adhered to in the emerging commercial arena of social media.

Genome-wide association study identifies human genetic variants associated with fatal outcome from Lassa fever.

Infection with Lassa virus (LASV) can cause Lassa fever, a haemorrhagic illness with an estimated fatality rate of 29.7%, but causes no or mild symptoms in many individuals. Here, to investigate whether human genetic variation underlies the heterogeneity of LASV infection, we carried out genome-wide association studies (GWAS) as well as seroprevalence surveys, human leukocyte antigen typing and high-throughput variant functional characterization assays.

FDX1 Is Required for the Biogenesis of Mitochondrial Cytochrome c Oxidase in Mammalian Cells.

Ferredoxins (FDXs) are evolutionarily conserved iron-sulfur (Fe-S) proteins that function as electron transfer proteins in diverse metabolic pathways. Mammalian mitochondria contain two ferredoxins, FDX1 and FDX2, which share a high degree of structural similarity but exhibit different functionalities. Previous studies have established the unique role of FDX2 in the biogenesis of Fe-S clusters; however, FDX1 seems to have multiple targets in vivo, some of which are only recently emerging.

Repeat corneal collagen cross-linking after failure of primary cross-linking in keratoconus.

Background: Primary corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) stabilises 96% of progressive keratoconus. There is limited evidence for the treatment of choice when this fails. We present 10 years of repeat CXL and compare with our published experience of primary CXL to (1) identify perioperative risk factors of primary CXL failure and (2) demonstrate the safety and efficacy of repeat CXL.

Understanding Ocular Surface Inflammation in Tears Before and After Autologous Cultivated Limbal Epithelial Stem Cell Transplantation.

Introduction: We aimed to determine the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the tears of patients with unilateral total limbal stem cell deficiency (TLSCD) caused by chemical burns before and after autologous cultivated limbal epithelial stem cell transplantation (CLET).

Methods: Tear samples were collected from both eyes of 23 patients with unilateral TLSCD and 11 healthy controls, at fixed timepoints before and after CLET. Dissolved molecules were extracted from Schirmer's strips using a standardised method and analysed on an array plate of ten inflammatory cytokines (V-Plex Proinflammatory Panel 1 Human Kit, MSD).

The challenges of reliably collecting, storing, organizing, and analyzing research data are critical in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa where several healthcare and biomedical research organizations have limited data infrastructure. The Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) System has been widely used by many institutions and hospitals in the USA for data collection, entry, and management and could help solve this problem. This study reports on the experiences, challenges, and lessons learned from establishing and applying REDCap for a large US-Nigeria research partnership that includes two sites in Nigeria, (the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL) and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH)) and Northwestern University (NU) in Chicago, Illinois in the United States.

A systematic review of cellular therapies for the treatment of limbal stem cell deficiency affecting one or both eyes.

Purpose: This systematic review (SR) assessed the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of cell-based therapy to manage limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), a sight-threatening orphan condition most frequently associated with severe chemical or thermal burns. LSCD has historically been treated by transplanting limbal tissue. In 1997, a new treatment, cultured limbal epithelial autografts, was described for unilateral LSCD.

Microbial Keratitis in Corneal Transplants: A 12-Year Analysis.

Purpose: To investigate the frequencies, trends, and in vitro drug susceptibilities of the causative pathogens in corneal transplant microbial infections in Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

Objective: To determine the relationship between the serum level of selenium and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Methods: A case controlled study that compared the serum level of selenium in 45 women with CIN (cases) to 45 women (age matched controls) with normal cervical cytology. Socio-demographic data and information on known risk factors for cervical cancer among the sample was compared between both groups using inferential statistics.

Heterocyclic Analogs of Sulforaphane Trigger DNA Damage and Impede DNA Repair in Colon Cancer Cells: Interplay of HATs and HDACs.

Scope: DNA repair inhibitors have broad clinical applications in tumor types with DNA repair defects, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Structural analogs of the anticancer agent sulforaphane (SFN) were investigated as modifiers of histone deacetylase (HDAC) and histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity, and for effects on DNA damage/repair pertinent to human CRC.

Methods And Results: In the polyposis in rat colon (Pirc) model, single oral administration of SFN and structurally related long-chain isothiocyanates (ITCs) decreased histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) expression and increased pH2AX levels markedly in adenomatous colon polyps, extending prior observations on HDAC3 inhibition/turnover in cell-based assays.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia-A Case Series of a Rare Keratitis Affecting Patients With Bandage Contact Lens.

Objectives: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an opportunistic pathogen known to form biofilms on contact lens and case surfaces that may result in permanent visual loss in cases of microbial keratitis. Because of its multiple drug resistance and extremely low incidence, there is little consensus on treatment. We investigated the predisposing factors, management, and visual outcomes in a small case series of patients to better inform the management of this rarely reported keratitis.

Early outcomes of fluorescence angiography in the setting of endorectal mucosa advancement flaps.

Background: Fistula-in-ano has a reported incidence of 31-34%. Besides fistulotomy, options for fistula repair are seton placement, endorectal advancement flap (ERAF), fibrin sealant, anal fistula plug and ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract. Despite having a reported success rate as high as 75-98%, ERAF is not without complications, including flap breakdown, recurrence and fecal incontinence.
