Introduction Refractive error is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness globally. Increasingly, patients are exposed to information about refractive surgery through social media advertisements. While national guidelines specify how refractive surgery should be advertised in traditional media, it is unclear to what extent these standards are adhered to in the emerging commercial arena of social media.

Here, to investigate whether human genetic variation underlies the heterogeneity of LASV infection, we carried out genome-wide association studies (GWAS) as well as seroprevalence surveys, human leukocyte antigen typing and high-throughput variant functional characterization assays.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFerredoxins (FDXs) are evolutionarily conserved iron-sulfur (Fe-S) proteins that function as electron transfer proteins in diverse metabolic pathways. Mammalian mitochondria contain two ferredoxins, FDX1 and FDX2, which share a high degree of structural similarity but exhibit different functionalities. Previous studies have established the unique role of FDX2 in the biogenesis of Fe-S clusters; however, FDX1 seems to have multiple targets in vivo, some of which are only recently emerging.

There is limited evidence for the treatment of choice when this fails. We present 10 years of repeat CXL and compare with our published experience of primary CXL to (1) identify perioperative risk factors of primary CXL failure and (2) demonstrate the safety and efficacy of repeat CXL.

Aims: To review the effectiveness of core stability exercises or conventional exercises in the management of chronic low back pain (CLBP).
Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the safe use of repeated intracameral amphotericin B for anterior chamber reactivations after therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty for Fusarium solani keratitis.
Methods: A 49-year-old woman monthly soft contact lens wearer with a history of overuse and swimming in her lenses presented with a red painful left eye. Her vision was 0.
Introduction: We aimed to determine the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the tears of patients with unilateral total limbal stem cell deficiency (TLSCD) caused by chemical burns before and after autologous cultivated limbal epithelial stem cell transplantation (CLET).
Methods: Tear samples were collected from both eyes of 23 patients with unilateral TLSCD and 11 healthy controls, at fixed timepoints before and after CLET. Dissolved molecules were extracted from Schirmer's strips using a standardised method and analysed on an array plate of ten inflammatory cytokines (V-Plex Proinflammatory Panel 1 Human Kit, MSD).
The challenges of reliably collecting, storing, organizing, and analyzing research data are critical in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa where several healthcare and biomedical research organizations have limited data infrastructure. The Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) System has been widely used by many institutions and hospitals in the USA for data collection, entry, and management and could help solve this problem. This study reports on the experiences, challenges, and lessons learned from establishing and applying REDCap for a large US-Nigeria research partnership that includes two sites in Nigeria, (the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL) and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH)) and Northwestern University (NU) in Chicago, Illinois in the United States.

LSCD has historically been treated by transplanting limbal tissue. In 1997, a new treatment, cultured limbal epithelial autografts, was described for unilateral LSCD.

Methods: Corneal scrape results recorded by the microbiology service between 2004 and 2015 were extracted from an established database. This microbiological data was matched with a separate database of all corneal transplant procedures performed in our centre over this time period.
Objectives: To assess publications examining the occurrence, composition, and clinical significance of a microbiome at the ocular surface.
Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar were searched. Reference lists of included articles were also searched for relevant citations.
Schizophrenic symptoms have often been associated with antisocial behaviours (ASBs). Most studies have focused on violence. The association between schizophrenia and violence is often confounded by socio demographic characteristics of patients.

Methods: A case controlled study that compared the serum level of selenium in 45 women with CIN (cases) to 45 women (age matched controls) with normal cervical cytology. Socio-demographic data and information on known risk factors for cervical cancer among the sample was compared between both groups using inferential statistics.

Structural analogs of the anticancer agent sulforaphane (SFN) were investigated as modifiers of histone deacetylase (HDAC) and histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity, and for effects on DNA damage/repair pertinent to human CRC.
Methods And Results: In the polyposis in rat colon (Pirc) model, single oral administration of SFN and structurally related long-chain isothiocyanates (ITCs) decreased histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) expression and increased pH2AX levels markedly in adenomatous colon polyps, extending prior observations on HDAC3 inhibition/turnover in cell-based assays.
PurposeTo identify the nature of microbial keratitis in corneal grafts and the clinical outcomes at a tertiary hospital in the United Kingdom.Patients and methodsA retrospective case series of microbial keratitis in corneal grafts at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne over a 17-year period (1997-2014).ResultsA total of 759 consecutive corneal grafts were identified from the Cornea Transplantation database.

Because of its multiple drug resistance and extremely low incidence, there is little consensus on treatment. We investigated the predisposing factors, management, and visual outcomes in a small case series of patients to better inform the management of this rarely reported keratitis.

Background: Fistula-in-ano has a reported incidence of 31-34%. Besides fistulotomy, options for fistula repair are seton placement, endorectal advancement flap (ERAF), fibrin sealant, anal fistula plug and ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract. Despite having a reported success rate as high as 75-98%, ERAF is not without complications, including flap breakdown, recurrence and fecal incontinence.
