Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein is known to cause oxidative stress and alter apoptosis pathways. However, the apoptosis results are inconsistent, and the real significance of oxidative stress is not well known. The aim of this study was twofold.

To identify diagnostic or therapeutic biomarkers for HCC associated with HCV (HCV-HCC), we tried to elucidate the factors related to the products from cancerous tissues of HCV-infected patients. From proteomic differential display analysis of liver tissue samples from HCV-HCC cancerous tissues and corresponding non-cancerous tissues from patients, three protein spots of the same molecular mass (42 kDa), whose expression increased in well-differentiated cancerous tissues, were detected.

Because, among the Japanese HCC patients approximately 80% of the patients are HCV positive and they are aged over 60 years old. On the other hand, in many Asian countries HBVpositive HCC patients are dominant and their age is younger than the Japanese patients.

In the presence of liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), transplanted BMC migrated into the peri-portal region and trans-differentiated into hepatocytes that produce albumin. Thus under these conditions, BMC transplantation induces liver regeneration.

Background/aims: Nocturnal gastric acid breakthrough (NAB) is given attention as one of the factors that cause refractory reflux esophagitis. However, its clinical states and mechanisms are not yet clearly understood. We studied whether there will be a NAB outbreak or not among healthy Japanese male volunteers upon administration of omeprazole, as well as what kind of factors will be involved in case of an outbreak.

Proteomic study of tumor tissues from HCC patients, focusing on apolipoprotein (apo) of apoA1, apoB100 and apoE, was performed by immunoblotting. Although the significant changes of apoA1 or apoB100 could not be shown statistically, the immunoblotting showed the increase in protein level of apoE in the tumor tissues of 88% of patients without increase of apoE gene expression and serum level.

Methods: Patients were randomly allocated to receive daily 500 mg of vitamin E and 750 mg of vitamin C (vitamin group, n = 14) or no supplement (non-vitamin group, n = 16) in addition to IFN-alpha-2b and ribavirin therapy. The fatty acid composition of mononuclear cell phospholipids was analyzed before and at 2, 4, and 8 wk after treatment.
The plasticity of bone marrow has been confirmed by the autopsy of a female recipient of bone marrow cell transplantation from a male donor. To establish new clinical cell therapies using autologous bone marrow cells for patients with liver failure, we developed a new in vivo model named the green fluorescent protein (GFP)/carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) model. Using the GFP/CCl4 model, we found that transplanted Liv8-negative cells efficiently repopulated into cirrhotic liver tissue and differentiated into albumin-producing hepatocytes under persistent liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride.

The aims of this study were to investigate the source of infection, and to evaluate the timing of interferon (IFN) therapy in patients with acute hepatitis C in Japan.
Methods: The records of 102 patients from 12 facilities in Japan who developed acute hepatitis C after 1990 were investigated.

We proceeded with DC immunotherapy for 21 cancer patients. Immature dendric cells were injected intratumorally to the 16 patients, and three good and effective cases were obtained: case 1: A 69-year-old male patient with papilla-vater carcinoma, case 2: A 49-year-old female patient with gastric cancer, case 3: A 66-year-old male patient with malignant melanoma.

Eight patients were treated with UFT/UZEL therapy as a first-line chemotherapy. UFT(300 mg/m(2)/day) and UZEL (75 mg/body/day) were administered orally for 28 consecutive days followed by a 7-day rest period, and this schedule was repeated every 5 weeks.

RANTES production in PBMCs stimulated by highly metastatic cancer cell line-conditioned supernatants was higher than in those stimulated by a less metastatic gastric cancer cell line-conditioned supernatant. RANTES receptors were expressed in PBMCs, but not in those cancer cell lines; therefore it was suggested that RANTES might affect PBMCs but not cancer cells.

Here, we have investigated the growth factors that are closely related to the differentiation of transplanted BMCs into hepatocytes, and the way that a specific growth factor affects the differentiation process in the GFP/CCl(4) model. We performed immunohistochemical analysis to identify an important growth factor in our model, viz.

CDAA diet administration resulted in an increased serum ALT level after one week. Hepatocytes in rat liver fed a CDAA diet showed malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation.

However, it still has received relatively little attention in Japan. To evaluate the clinical status of EUS-FNAB in Japan, we retrospectively analyzed the results with regard to the ability of EUS-FNAB to diagnose pancreatic cancer, as well as its safety.

Genotypes were A in 27 (19%) patients, B in 8 (5%), C in 109 (75%) and mixed with B and C in the remaining one (1%). Genotype A was more frequent in metropolitan than the other areas (21/69 (30%) vs.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA retrospective survey of Japanese patients histologically diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B was conducted to determine the effectiveness of lamivudine in preventing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Of the 2795 patients who satisfied criteria for analysis after treatment from any of 30 medical institutions, 657 had received lamivudine and the remaining 2138 had not. A Cox regression model with liver biopsy as the starting point revealed seven factors related to HCC: lamivudine therapy, gender, family clustering of hepatitis B, age at liver biopsy, hepatic fibrosis stage, serum albumin level, and platelet count.
