Background: This study aimed to compare the performance of Sanger-based SARS-CoV-2 spike gene sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)-based full-genome sequencing for variant identification in saliva samples with low viral titer.

Methods: Using 241 stocked saliva samples collected from confirmed COVID-19 patients between November 2020 and March 2022 in Hiroshima, SARS-CoV-2 spike gene sequencing (nt22735-nt23532) was performed by nested RT-PCR and Sanger platform using in-house primers. The same samples underwent full-genome sequencing by NGS using Illumina NextSeq2000.

A 40-year-old man was admitted with a diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. Although most of multiple ground-glass opacities and consolidations on computed tomography improved, a round ground-glass opacity with consolidation remained unchanged and was suspected to be a part-solid nodule of lung adenocarcinoma. Pathologic diagnosis of resected tumor was papillary adenocarcinoma.

We conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey on sequelae, psychological distress (K6), impairments in work performance (WFun), and COVID-19-related experiences of stigma and discrimination in two designated COVID-19 hospitals in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, between August 2020 and March 2021. The prevalence of sequelae was calculated by age and COVID-19 severity.

Sequential dynamics of virological and serological changes in the serum of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral load dynamics in respiratory samples have been studied, but knowledge about changes in serial serum samples of infected patients in relation to their immunological response is lacking. Herein we describe the basis for this method using both theory and new experiments. Benchmark experiments were conducted using ubiquitin because of the availability of reference data for folding and unfolding rates from NMR studies.

This study aims to evaluate the reliability and establish procedures for the use of digital photogrammetry in anthropometric measurements of the human hand. Developing an usability test involves defining the metrics that are being evaluated, the methods used and the right tasks to be performed to achieve the objectives from the usability test. This article presents the development of an usability test aimed to evaluate the experience while first interacting with a product by using the augmented reality technology. This usability test is part of a bigger research that aims to evaluate if the use of augmented reality helps the process of learning how to use a new product.

Infrared imaging has been used to visualize superficial temperatures in industrial employers standing and working in an indoor environment at 22°C. Temperature distributions and changes have been recorded digitally and analyzed. Mean skin temperatures determined by this method have been compared with superficial temperatures obtained with a probe thermocouple.

Dietary rapeseed (canola) oil (CO) given as the only fat nutrient shortens life in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP), compared with SHRSP given soybean oil (SO) instead of CO. CO ingestion increases plasma lipids and causes renal lesions in SHRSP and in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), and increases plasma lipids also in Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats, a normotensive counterpart of SHR. This study examined whether or not such unfavorable effects of CO are restricted to these closely related strains.

Temporary perfusion for mesenteric ischemia with acute type A aortic dissection.

We report advantages of a temporary mesenteric perfusion method for bowel ischemia with acute type A aortic dissection. The perfusion catheter was inserted from the branch of the superior mesenteric artery. This technique was found to be useful in certain cases that require prompt visceral organ perfusion and proximal aortic repair, which enabled a simultaneous treatment for both lesions and a blood pressure evaluation.

We experienced 4 cases that had to be performed emergent ascending and arch replacement for acute type A aortic dissection with anomalies of the aortic arch (aberrant right subclavian artery in 2 case and isolated left vertebral artery in 2 cases). As for the aberrant right subclavian artery, preoperative diagnosis is possible by CT scan. We must not overlook aberrant right subclavian artery in order to prevent brain complication in emergency arch replacement for acute type A aortic dissection.
