A relationship between childhood starvation and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) in adulthood was previously indicated. Ukraine suffered a series of artificial between 1921 and 1947. Famines of 1932 to 1933 and 1946 were most severe among them.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is characterized by shorter leukocyte telomere length, but the relationship between leukocyte telomere length and type 2 diabetes mellitus development is rather questioned. Fasting and post-load glycaemia associated with different types of insulin resistance and their relation with leukocyte telomere length remains unknown. We compared leukocyte telomere length and fasting or post-load glucose levels in persons who do not receive glucose lowering treatment.

Background: Whereas an increase of neck circumference (NC) had been recently identified as a new independent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic syndrome risk factor, similar assessments concerning screen-detected diabetes mellitus (SDDM) have not been made. Thyroid gland volume (ThV) can potentially affect NC however the significance of this influence concerning the risk of NC-related disease is unknown.

Methods: We performed a ThV-adjusted evaluation of NC within a population-based investigation of SDDM and impaired glucose regulation (IGR) prevalence.

The aim of present observational cross-sectional study was the estimation of the gender-related risk of non-fatal stroke, myocardial infarction and blindness in type 2 diabetics (T2D) depending on treatment in Ukraine. In Dec 2005 the data from 11 Ukrainian regions for all living T2D already included into the nationwide population-based diabetes register (start of creation Jan 2001) was extracted. Male/female relative risks (RRs) for non-fatal stroke, myocardial infarction and blindness were calculated in treatment groups: Diet only (DO) 7273/15901; oral antidiabetic drugs (OAD) 15109/ 33913; insulin (I) 5529/12462 male/female respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effects of induced acute myocardial ischemia in alloxane-diabetic dogs under anesthesia, focusing on cardiovascular reactions.
  • The systemic circulation responses during ischemia were similar in diabetic dogs with moderate and mild hyperglycemia compared to healthy controls, but their coronary artery dilation and recovery were less efficient.
  • In dogs with severe diabetes (high hyperglycemia), typical responses to ischemia were diminished or absent, leading to a significantly slower recovery of heart function and metabolic processes during reperfusion.

Cerebral scanning was performed in 52 cases of brain infarctions (in 43 cases in the system of middle brain arteries and in 9 cases in the vertebro-basillar basin). For this purpose in 46 of the studied cases human albumin serum, labeled readioactive I131 was used and in 6 cases-Tc 99m. Positive scannograms were received only in 16 patients with infarctions in the system of the middle brain arteries.

The authors describe one case of Fahr's disease in a 69-year-old male. The disease was characterized by a rapid development with polymorphic subcortical symptoms (mainly hyperkinetic) and a rapid disintegration of intellectual functions. Besides that, cortical and pyramidal disturbances (hemiparesis, visual disorders, etc.
