[Effects of ulinastatin on endotoxin shock in dogs].

The therapeutic effect of ulinastatin, an inhibitor of the protease activity, on endotoxin shock was evaluated using 17 Beagle dogs. Single intravenous injection of ulinastatin at a dose of 5,000 or 25,000 U.kg-1 failed to suppress the endotoxin-induced circulatory disturbance but significantly inhibited increases in pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance that occur early following administration of endotoxin.

Effects of chronic administration of noradrenaline and glucagon on in vitro brown adipose tissue thermogenesis.

The in vitro brown adipose tissue (BAT) oxygen consumption stimulated by noradrenaline (NA) or glucagon (G) was significantly lower in chronically NA-treated rats and that of G-treated rats did not differ as compared with that of vehicle-treated control animals. In vitro thermogenic response of BAT in NA-treated rats was consistent with that induced by cold acclimation.

Globus pallidus calcification in Down syndrome with progressive neurologic deficits.

We report a 10-year-old Down syndrome patient who developed dystonia, choreoathetosis, dysarthria, and dysphagia beginning with hemiparesis. Cranial computed tomography disclosed bilateral calcification in the globus pallidus which resembled a sign of premature aging. Conversely, the clinical course and magnetic resonance imaging findings resembled those of Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome.

Effect of immobilization stress on in vitro and in vivo thermogenesis of brown adipose tissue.

Repetitive intermittent stress such as immobilization has been shown to induce an improved cold tolerance through an enhanced capacity of nonshivering thermogenesis (NST), causing positive cross adaptation between nonthermal stress and cold. In the present study, effect of 3-h-daily immobilization stress for 4-5 weeks was investigated on in vitro and in vivo thermogenesis of interscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT). In vitro thermogenesis was measured in the minced tissue blocks incubated in Krebs-Ringer phosphate buffer with glucose and albumin at 37 degrees C, using a Clark-type oxygen electrode.

Effects of neonatal asphyxia on the serotonin neuron system in the developing brain studied by immunohistochemistry.

The effects of neonatal asphyxia on the serotonin neuron system were examined using the immunoperoxidase method. Male mice, 2 days of age, were exposed to total asphyxia (100% CO2) for 30 min. Mice that spontaneously survived were perfused transcardially with a fixative at 15, 30 and 60 days of age.

[Clinical study of drug accumulation in gastric cancer after preoperative intra-arterial EAP II injection therapy].

Preoperative intra-arterial injection therapy using etoposide, epirubicin and carboplatin (EAP II) was done for patients with resectable advanced gastric cancer. Twenty-six patients (14 males and 12 females) were treated. The concentrations of adriamycin (ADM) and platinum (Pt) were measured in cancer tissue, normal mucosa and regional lymph-nodes which were obtained operatively and in sera just before operation.

[Analysis of subsets of colonic mucosal lymphocyte in ulcerative colitis by two color flow cytometry].

To assess how the immunological events occur in the colonic mucosa in patients with ulcerative colitis, it is thought to be important to evaluate the subpopulations and/or subsets of mucosal lymphocytes. In this point of view, we assayed those by lymphocyte isolation techniques and two color flow cytometry. Although our results showed no disease-specific abnormalities of the percentages of CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, and HLA-DR (+) cells in PBL (peripheral blood lymphocyte) nor CML (colonic mucosal lymphocyte), these subsets of CML appeared to be altered according to the grade of severity of inflammation.

A laser heterodyne spectrometer with a tunable diode laser as a local oscillator has been developed for ultrahigh resolution IR spectroscopy of the absorption spectra of trace constituents in the earth's atmosphere. The spectral resolution and SNR of the developed system are 0.0013 cm(-1) and ~500, respectively.

[Appearance of Philadelphia chromosome at relapse of erythroleukemia in a 12-year-old boy].

A 12-year-old boy was referred to our hospital because of anemia and jaundice. On admission bone marrow smears were compatible with M6 classification of the FAB, revealing 74.5% erythroblasts of all nucleated cells and 40% blasts of nonerythroid cells.

Multiform accelerated idioventricular rhythm (AIVR) in a child with acute myocarditis.

Acute myocarditis is complicated by various types of conducting disturbances and heart failure. We describe the case of a school boy with acute myocarditis, who developed various types of conduction disturbances, including multiform accelerated idioventricular rhythm (AIVR), during convalescence from severe pump failure. Multiform AIVR has been reported mostly in adults but, to the best of our knowledge, not in children.

Lymphocytapheresis in a patient with severe aplastic anemia.

A 17-year-old Japanese boy with severe aplastic anemia was treated with oxymetholone and prednisolone for 9 weeks without improvement. He then received 2 courses of bolus methylprednisone therapy without improvement and developed a severe liver dysfunction due to this bolus therapy. He had no HLA-compatible sibling for a bone marrow transplantation, and antithymus globulin was not available.

Cloning of human neuroblastoma cells in methylcellulose culture.

An in vitro methylcellulose technique was used in an attempt to culture neuroblastoma cells from 25 bone marrows from eight children with neuroblastoma. Colonies appeared within 5 days in histologically positive bone marrows. Light microscopy, linearity study, and marker study provided evidence for the neuroblastoma origin of the colonies.

[Two cases of unresectable pancreatic cancer responding to combined chemotherapy with cisplatin, PSK and UFT].

Two patients who had unresectable pancreatic cancer were treated with a combined chemotherapy using Cisplatin, PSK and UFT. A remarkable decrease of tumor size was observed on CT. These two cases corresponded to partial response (PR) according to the response criteria proposed by Koyama-Saitoh.
