Semisynthesis using recombinant polypeptides as building blocks is a powerful approach for the preparation of proteins with a variety of modifications such as glycosylation. The activation of the C terminus of recombinant peptides is a key step for coupling peptide building blocks and preparing a full-length polypeptide of a target protein. This article reports two chemical approaches for transformation of the C terminus of recombinant polypeptides to thioester surrogates.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has resulted in an urgent need to study the risk of infection from aerosols generated during dental care and to conduct a review of infection controls. However, existing studies on aerosol particles related to dental treatment have mainly evaluated only the scattering range. Few studies have been conducted on the specifics of the generation of aerosol particles in clinical settings, their mechanisms and patterns of distribution throughout open or enclosed spaces, the duration that they remain suspended in air, and the amount and size of particles present.

Ion-specific effects on the solubility of nonpolar solutes and on the solute-solute hydrophobic interaction in aqueous electrolyte solutions are studied on the basis of a continuum theory that incorporates the excluded volume of the molecules using the four-component (water, cations, anions, and solutes) Boublı́k-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland model and ion hydration (electrostriction) using the Born model. We examine how the ordering of ions in the salt effect on the solubility as measured by the Sechenov coefficient changes with varying sizes of ions and solutes. Our calculation reproduces the general trend of experimentally measured and also provides insight into the irregular behavior of for lithium ion.

We analyzed the compression pressures in 2772 mammography images of 807 patients acquired by digital mammography equipment at four facilities. The analysis included the average compression pressure at all facilities, difference in compression pressure at each facility, differences between the pressures used by radiological technologists in the same facility, and difference attributed to the breast structure. We also analyzed the effects of the compression pressure on the breast thickness and mean glandular dose (MGD) at each facility.

The regulation of muscle contraction is a critical function in the cardiovascular system, and abnormalities may be life-threatening or cause illness. The common basic mechanism in muscle contraction is the interaction between the protein filaments myosin and actin. Although this interaction is primarily regulated by intracellular Ca, the primary targets and intracellular signaling pathways differ in vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle.

We have systematically investigated the structural properties, carrier lifetimes, namely, photoluminescence (PL) lifetimes (), and electron spin relaxation times () in (110) GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs) by using time-resolved PL measurements. The MQWs were grown by molecular beam epitaxy within a wide range of the growth temperature (430-600 °C) and a high V/III flux ratio using As. At 530 °C < < 580 °C, we found that the quality of the heterointerfaces is significantly improved, resulting in ~40 ns at RT, one order of magnitude longer than those reported so far.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a standard treatment in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD); however, periprocedural myocardial infarction (PMI) remains a common complication of PCI. Aggressive lipid-lowering therapy with statin has shown to reduce the incidence of PMI by preventing coronary microvascular dysfunction. It is unclear whether evolocumab, a potent lipid-lowering agent, could diminish microvascular damage after PCI.

The success of biomaterials for bone regeneration relies on many factors, among which osseointegration plays a key role. Biogran (BG) is a bioactive glass commonly employed as a bone graft in dental procedures. Despite its use in clinical practice, the capability of BG to promote osseointegration has never been resolved at the nanoscale.

Background & Aims: Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are innate-like T cells restricted by major histocompatibility complex-related molecule 1 (MR1) and express a semi-invariant T cell receptor. Previously, we reported the activation status of circulating MAIT cells in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) was associated with disease activity and that these cells had infiltrated the inflamed colonic mucosa. These findings suggest MAIT cells are involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease.
