Transition towards cancer mortality predominance over cardiovascular disease mortality in Brazil, 2000-2019: a population-based study.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer are the first and second leading causes of death in Brazil and worldwide. However, an ongoing epidemiological transition in which cancer surpasses CVD has been observed in many high and middle-income countries. In this study, we provided a nationwide analysis of the transition towards cancer mortality predominance over CVD mortality in Brazil.

The generation and maintenance of protective immunity is a dynamic interplay between host and environment that is impacted by age. In response, MOCHA (Model-based single cell Open CHromatin Analysis) presents major advances over existing analysis tools, including: 1) improving identification of sample-specific open chromatin, 2) statistical modeling of technical drop-out with zero-inflated methods, 3) mitigation of false positives in single cell analysis, 4) identification of alternative transcription-starting-site regulation, and 5) modules for inferring temporal gene regulatory networks from longitudinal data.

Background: Ultra-processed foods have been associated with several negative outcomes, but it is not clear whether they are related to bullying perpetration. Moreover, no previous study has investigated the potential role of deviant behaviors as a mediator of this association. Long COVID or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) is a clinical syndrome featuring diverse symptoms that can persist for months following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. The aetiologies may include persistent inflammation, unresolved tissue damage or delayed clearance of viral protein or RNA, but the biological differences they represent are not fully understood. Here we evaluate the serum proteome in samples, longitudinally collected from 55 PASC individuals with symptoms lasting ≥60 days after onset of acute infection, in comparison to samples from symptomatically recovered SARS-CoV-2 infected and uninfected individuals.

Fertility preservation: a case report of a newborn following 13 years of oocyte cryopreservation.

Objective: Oocyte cryopreservation enables the storage of genetic material, especially in situations where the ovarian function is compromised, also for women desiring to postpone maternity. Before 2012, oocyte cryopreservation was still experimental, and the success of the procedure was uncertain; however, it was the only possibility that women had for fertility preservation. Thus, we aim to report a case of a birth after 13 years of elective oocyte cryopreservation.

A cross-sectional study was conducted with 2,040 adolescents from a medium-sized city in Brazil. The exposures assessed were the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances, and social isolation.

However, PLA is a complex artifact to be designed due to its large size and the multiple conflicting properties that need to be considered to ensure its quality, requiring a great effort for the architect. PLA designing has been formulated as an optimization problem aiming at improving some architectural properties in order to maximize both the feature modularization and the relational cohesion, and to minimize the class coupling.

: Patients with hematological disease are 15 times more likely to develop sepsis than the general population. The patient with hematological disease and, mainly, those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), develop a severe secondary humoral immunodeficiency, with low serum levels of IgM, which may take more than a year to be restored : This is a retrospective, controlled and observational study that analyzed 51 patients with underlying hematological disease, who were diagnosed with sepsis or septic shock during the study period, to evaluate whether IgM-rich Ig replacement decreases the 30-day mortality. Of the 51 patients, 35 patients received IgM-rich immunoglobulin (group A) and 16 (31%) received conventional therapy.

Social inequality in food consumption between 2008 and 2019 in Brazil.

Objective: To analyse the trend of social inequality in food consumption among Brazilians from 2008 to 2019.

Design: Time series analyses using cross-sectional annual data from the Telephone Surveillance System (VIGITEL 2008-2019). Food consumption was evaluated through: (1) consumption of five or more portions of fruits and vegetables in ≥5 d/week; (2) consumption of beans in ≥5 d/week and (3) consumption of soft drinks or artificial juices in ≥5 d/week.

We deeply profiled the longitudinal immune response in individuals with mild COVID-19 beginning with early time points post-infection (1-15 days) and proceeding through convalescence to >100 days after symptom onset.

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy to oral candidiasis not responsive to micafungin in a patient undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation.

In hematopoietic cell transplants (HCT) patients, opportunistic fungal infections - especially candidiasis - are typical and, due to the immunosuppressed condition, severe and fatal clinical conditions may occur. Many antifungal agents are used for treating candidiasis; however, there are non-responsive, drug-resistant cases in which alternative antimicrobial therapies are strongly needed. The present study aimed to report a clinical case in which antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) was used for extensive oral pseudomembranous candidiasis not responsive to micafungin in a patient undergoing HCT.

Immunogenicity of Tumor Necrosis Factor Antagonists and Effect of Dose Escalation on Anti-Drug Antibodies and Serum Drug Concentrations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Background: Infliximab and adalimumab concentrations are associated with important outcomes in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Antibodies to infliximab (ATI) and adalimumab (ATA) are associated with reduced drug concentrations and worse outcomes. Because the efficacy of dose escalation to overcome antibodies is unclear, we assessed the impact of this strategy to overcome immunogenicity in IBD.
