Article Synopsis
  • Case 1 details a 65-year-old woman who underwent surgery for right ventricular outflow tract stenosis, and unexpected post-surgery findings showed a shunt between her heart's right and left ventricles due to a ventricular septal defect (VSD).
  • Case 2 focuses on a 58-year-old woman with a double-chambered right ventricle, where preoperative imaging missed a VSD that was concealed by a septal aneurysm, leading to no recognized shunt during surgery.
  • The cases suggest that diagnoses of right ventricular issues in adults can vary significantly between preoperative and postoperative views, and using multiple imaging techniques may enhance the detection of congenital heart conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The Nuss procedure is a minimally invasive surgery for pectus excavatum that has seen various improvements, though the effects of using multiple bars on surgical outcomes are still uncertain.
  • A study evaluated 225 patients who underwent the procedure, comparing outcomes between those with 1-2 bars and those with 3 or more bars; results showed more asymmetric conditions and postoperative pleurisy in the group with more bars.
  • The study concluded that while using multiple bars can help correct asymmetric cases, there is an increased risk of postoperative complications, particularly pleurisy, that should be monitored.

Objectives: One possible reason for the long-term patency of no-touch (NT) saphenous vein grafts (SVG) is the preservation of the vasa vasorum in the adventitia/perivascular adipose tissue (PAT). We investigated the vasa vasorum of the NT SVG in vivo using frequency-domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT), performed qualitative and quantitative analyses and compared them with the conventional SVG.

Methods: An FD-OCT study was performed on 14 SVG at the postoperative coronary angiography 1-2 weeks postoperatively (NT group, n = 9; conventional group, n = 5).

Archaeosine (G) is an archaea-specific tRNA modification synthesized via multiple steps. In the first step, archaeosine tRNA guanine transglucosylase (ArcTGT) exchanges the G15 base in tRNA with 7-cyano-7-deazaguanine (preQ). In Euryarchaea, preQ15 in tRNA is further modified by archaeosine synthase (ArcS).

We developed chemically modified PCR primers that allow the design of flexible sticky ends by introducing a photo-cleavable group at the phosphate moiety. Nucleic acid derivatives containing -nitrobenzyl photo-cleavable groups with a -butyl group at the benzyl position were stable during strong base treatment for oligonucleotide synthesis and thermal cycling in PCR reactions. PCR using primers incorporating these nucleic acid derivatives confirmed that chain extension reactions completely stopped at position 1 before and after the site of the photo-cleavable group was introduced.
