The mechanism by which gravity controls the polar transport of auxin, a plant hormone regulating multiple physiological processes in higher plants, remains unclear, although an important role of PIN proteins as efflux carriers/facilitators in polar auxin transport is suggested. We are going to study the effect of microgravity on the polar transport of auxin, focusing on the cellular localization of its efflux carrier, PsPIN1 in etiolated pea seedlings and ZmPIN1a in etiolated maize seedlings grown under microgravity conditions on the International Space Station (ISS) using immunohistochemical analyses according to space experimental plans (Ueda, 2016). To obtain adequate results regarding the cellular localization of functional proteins, prolonged chemical fixation processes as well as chemical fixatives should be well-matched to the properties of functional proteins as antigens since experimental analyses will be performed on the ground after keeping samples for a long duration on the ISS.

Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a devastating disease in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Based on the unsatisfactory results of autologous mononuclear cell transplantation for patients with CLI undergoing HD, we conducted a phase II clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-mobilized peripheral blood-derived autologous purified CD34 positive (CD34+) cell transplantation for CLI in patients undergoing HD. Background: X-linked Alport syndrome (XLAS) is a progressive hereditary nephropathy caused by mutations in the gene. Genotype-phenotype correlation in male XLAS is relatively well established; relative to truncating mutations, nontruncating mutations exhibit milder phenotypes. However, transcript comparison between XLAS cases with splicing abnormalities that result in a premature stop codon and those with nontruncating splicing abnormalities has not been reported, mainly because transcript analysis is not routinely conducted in patients with XLAS.

The investigation of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and the preparation of antagonists are important for determining whether certain proteins are suitable medical targets. In the present study, we used the capillary electrophoresis-systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment to generate natural and artificial nucleic acid aptamers targeting Ebola virus protein 24 (eVP24), demonstrating that artificial aptamers, synthesised utilising a uridine analogue with an adenine residue at its C5 position, exhibited activities exceeding those of natural ones. To confirm the functionality of the as-prepared aptamers, their abilities to inhibit the PPIs of eVP24 were determined by capillary electrophoresis and bio-layer interferometry, and the obtained results unambiguously demonstrated that these aptamers interacted with the functional site of eVP24 and were thus good antagonists.

The principle of empirical therapy for patients with intra-abdominal infections (IAI) should include antibiotics with activity against Enterobacteriaceae and Bacteroides fragilis group species. Coverage of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, and Enterococcus faecalis is also recommended for hospital-associated IAI. A nationwide survey was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens isolated from postoperative IAI.
