PCR assay has been shown to be a promising option for the diagnosis of brucellosis. However, few studies have been performed with field samples in order to evaluate the assay as a diagnostic tool. In this study, routine use of a species-specific PCR assay previously developed for the identification of Brucella cultures was assessed for the detection of Brucella DNA directly from the stomach contents of aborted sheep fetuses.
