BHA (2(3)-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole) produced inhibition of both culture growth and oxygen consumption, NAD(P) reduction and cytochrome b oxidation, on intact epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi. BHA inhibited respiration and reduced NAD(P) in intact T. cruzi trypomastigotes.

The Frutillar 82, F nasal 90, F vaginal 90, Puente Alto 77, VMLB 79, and Bio Bio 92 isolates of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) from Chile were analysed by Eco RI, Bam HI and Hind III restriction enzymes (RE). The Los Angeles (LA) strain was used as reference. The results indicated that the fingerprints of F nasal 90 and F vaginal 90 were identical to the three RE used, but they were different from the other isolates.

Reproducible, exercise-induced anaphylactic reactions occur in some patients only after certain foods have been eaten before exercise. We describe a patient in whom hazelnuts were a triggering factor for exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Skin tests and RAST were positive for nuts and grass and weed pollen.

Fluorochrome-labeled lectins were used to study the expression of glycoconjugates during the postnatal differentiation of normal and cystic rabbit renal corpuscles. Glomerular cysts (GC) are induced in the rabbit by a single injection of corticoids. The Bowman's capsule of these cysts is exclusively formed of podocytes (parietal podocytes).

Lung function and bronchial response to methacholine were studied in 47 young adults who had had childhood asthma, and after a period of 14-21 years, showed a different clinical evolution. At present, these subjects have been classified in four clinical groups: asymptomatic, rhinitic, asthmatic only due to exercise, and asthmatic. The same study was performed in 23 healthy individuals without personal histories of respiratory or allergic pathology.

Sulfites have been implicated as the cause of bronchospasm in some subjects with asthma. However, there is still no universally accepted explanation of the pathogenesis of these reactions. We have studied five children with asthma with metabisulfite intolerance confirmed by oral challenge testing.

Results obtained with in situ mitochondria of Trypanosoma cruzi showed that this protozoon had only two energy coupling sites, sites II and III that correspond to higher eukaryote mitochondria. Rotenone did not inhibit the oxygen uptake of the parasite. These results suggest that the NADH-ubiquinone segment of the respiratory chain has no activity.

The etiology and pathogenesis of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome remain obscure. Several investigations have reported a role for allergy in the development and maintenance of this disease, especially in childhood. We have studied 20 pediatric patients with relapses of nephrotic syndrome related in time to respiratory symptoms.

We present a review of the relationship between Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Precancer and Epidermoid Cancer of the uterine cervix, Co-factors that contribute in cervical carcinogenesis and the mechanism through which Papillomaviruses transform normal cells into neoplastic cells by inducing an overproduction of the encoded proteins. We also offer final remarks and conclusions on this pathology that increases its incidence every year.

Anomalous origin of right coronary artery from the left sinus of Valsalva is a uncommon congenital anomaly which is difficult to demonstrate angiographically. For many years pathologists classified it as a minor anomaly of no clinical significance. It has only recently been associated with significant manifestations of myocardial ischemia.

The three-dimensional structure of the neck segment (NS) of the rabbit nephrons was studied by scanning electron microscopy (after fracture, micro-dissection, or after corrosion nephron casts), and by the air-cast method. The NS was observed at the glomerulotubular junction in 68.5% of all nephrons.

The paperwork objective is to analyze if the HPV infections are associated to Ca in situ (CIS). The cytologic, colposcopic and histologic examinations of women affected by CIS were revised. It was determined that a group of them were also infected by HPV.

Tubular cysts consisting of dilatation of the collecting ducts at the level of the subcapsular zone of the kidney were induced in newborn rabbits by a single injection of methylprednisolone acetate. We describe here the structural and compositional modifications of the tubular basement membrane (BM) during the formation, growth, and regression of the tubular cysts. During development of the tubular cysts the cystic BM appeared thickened and multilayered, with numerous matrix vesicles.

The objective of this study, is to demonstrate the presence of human virus papilloma proteins (HPV) in cervix biopsies, diagnosed histologically as virus infected. In 52.9% of the cases (20 biopsies) the relation between HPV and histological study was found.

We describe here a procedure to improve contrast and resolution in fluorescence microscopy of sectioned tissues. Tissue fragments were fixed in ethanol-glacial acetic acid, embedded in diethylene glycol distearate, and semithin sectioned. This method maintains tissue antigenicity while preserving the structure of cells and tissues.

This paper presents a structural and morphometric study of the basement membrane underlying the parietal epithelium of cysts developed in the rabbit kidney after a single postnatal injection of methylprednisolone acetate. This epithelium consists of podocyte-like cells named parietal podocytes. Our results show that the parietal podocytes synthesize their own basement membrane in vivo.

To evaluate the benefits of intravenous streptokinase (SQIV) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI), we joined a group of ten Mexican university hospitals, that were coordinated by the National Institute of Cardiology of Mexico. We included patients less than 70 years of age admitted to the hospital with less than 6 hours from the onset of chest pain during their first myocardial infarction. All patients had ST segment elevation of 1.

To evaluate the importance of early initiation of fibrinolytic therapy with intravenous streptokinase (IVSK), we studied 34 consecutive patients, within less than six hours of the onset of acute myocardial infarction, who were treated with 1.5 million units of intravenous streptokinase. All the patients had coronary angiograms in the first seventy two hours.

IgE-mediated sub-clinical food hypersensitivity is recognized, but the hypersensitivity indicated is not always in accord with the observed symptoms. Study of 2 cases shows the inefficacy of a prescribed exclusion diet, without confirmation of the relationship between symptomatology and the food allergy. In addition, elimination of the foods aggravated the sensitivity of the patients and symptoms after provocation tests.
