In a 72-year-old man with watery diarrhoea and leukocytosis the proliferation of abnormal cells was studied in specimens obtained by endoscopic biopsy of the gastrointestinal tract. Flow cytometry of leukaemia cells revealed a monoclonal expansion of "double-negative" (CD4-, CD8-) cells bearing T-cell receptor (TCR) alpha beta products. Southern blotting confirmed monoclonal integration of HTLV-I.

She was diagnosed as having sarcoidosis because of an elevated level of serum angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), findings from a Ga67 scintiscan and the bilateral uveitis, although her chest X-ray film was normal. This patient is one of the most oldest patients on record to have sarcoidosis.

A 23 year-old man was admitted because of weakness and atrophy in both tights. He was 184 cm in height with arachnodactyly and had a mild dilatation of the ascending aorta which was detected by cardiac echogram and chest CT scan. A laboratory examination revealed normal serum values for mucopolysaccarides and amino acids, and 46XY chromosomes.

Blood samples were obtained from 20 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). After the treatment of platelets with neuraminidase, the value of PA-IgG positive platelets (%PA-IgG) were significantly increased in patients with ITP, but not in controls.

At the end of the dosing period, hemodynamic changes were examined using the radioactive microsphere technique. CS-905 produced a sustained dose-dependent antihypertensive effect without inducing tolerance during the 15-week dosing period and prevented cardiac hypertrophy.

Both CS-905 and nicardipine, when administered orally, produced a dose-dependent fall of blood pressure in conscious perinephritic hypertensive dogs. Unlike the hypotensive effect of nicardipine, that of CS-905 has a gradual onset and is long-lasting, with little increase in the heart rate and plasma renin activity (PRA).

Of the 568 patients, 514 cases had acute pharyngitis, 8 cases each had acute tonsillitis and acute bronchitis, 7 cases were acute pneumonia, 6 cases had herpangina, 18 cases had hand-foot-mouth disease with the signs of respiratory infections, 5 cases had varicella with the signs of respiratory infections and 2 cases were mumps with the signs of respiratory infections. Three hundred strains of potential (greater than or equal to 10(7) CFU/ml) pathogens were recovered from 293 of the 568 cases, which consisted of 124 strains of Haemophilus influenzae, 58 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, 45 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, 26 strains of Branhamella catarrhalis, 25 strains of Streptococcus pyogenes, 9 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and 13 strains of other species, not including non-fermentile gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus.

The drug uptake and efflux studies revealed no decrease in net cellular drug accumulation. VP-16-induced DNA single- and double-strand breaks in the whole THP-1/E cells decreased significantly compared to the sensitive counterpart as assessed by alkaline elution methods.

An intravenous infusion of RS-1893 at a dose of 3 micrograms/kg/min gradually decreased blood pressure and increased heart rate and cardiac output. Blood flows in the kidney and stomach were increased.

CS-905 is a potent dihydropyridine calcium blocker that has a gradual and long-lasting antihypertensive action with little tachycardia in SHR. In this study, we investigated chronic and acute effects of CS-905 on renal functions in SHR. To examine the chronic effects, 23 week-old male SHR were treated with CS-905 (1 or 3 mg/kg/day, p.

Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis were divided into the following two groups; one group consisted of patients (n = 37) in which tubercle bacilli converted to negative within 6 months after the institution of anti-tuberculous chemotherapy and remained negative thereafter, and the other group (n = 21) in which tubercle bacilli persisted in spite of long-term chemotherapy. A comparison was made on serum factors and blood cell components, which were linked with humoral and cellular immunity respectively, between the above two groups of tuberculosis patients.

The incidence and clinical features of drug fever induced by antibiotics were investigated. Of a total of 390 patients analyzed, 193 had malignant diseases (lung cancer in most cases) and the remaining 197 had non-malignant diseases, of which the majority comprised pulmonary infectious diseases such as pneumonia, lung abscess and chronic infections. beta-Lactams most frequently induced drug fever.

Viral culture was performed by a microplate-method devised originally by Numazaki. Since respiratory infectious complications in lung cancer cases are major obstacles for adequate or intensive anticancer chemotherapy, they often affect prognosis unfavorably. Such respiratory infections secondary to lung cancer generally occur on the basis of defects of the defence mechanism against infections due to disturbance in the clearance system in sites peripheral to bronchial obstruction or stenosis. The lowered concentration of antimicrobial agents at the site of infection, resulting from decreased local pulmonary blood flow, make the infections difficult to manage.
