Stable angina (SA) pectoris is a common and disabling disorder in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), with increasing epidemiology and is associated with myocardial infarction and increased mortality. However, within the population of SA patients, an individual's prognosis can vary considerably. Except from conventional risk factors a variety of biomarkers have been evaluated for their prognostic significance in the settings of SA.

Heart rate is a major determinant of cardiac output and myocardial oxygen utilization and is increasingly being nominated as a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Despite this evidence, screening strategies for preventing cardiovascular diseases do not include routine assessment of resting heart rate. Reasonably, heart rate reduction has been suggested as a useful approach against angina pectoris in subjects with acute or chronic coronary syndromes.

Menstrual and reproductive factors and exogenous hormone use have been investigated as pancreatic cancer risk factors in case-control and cohort studies, but results have been inconsistent. We conducted a prospective examination of menstrual and reproductive factors, exogenous hormone use and pancreatic cancer risk (based on 304 cases) in 328,610 women from the EPIC cohort. Then, in a case-control study nested within the EPIC cohort, we examined 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CYP17A1 (an essential gene in sex steroid metabolism) for association with pancreatic cancer in women and men (324 cases and 353 controls).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between aortic artery distensibility, expressed by pulse pressure (PP) and autonomic nervous system function expressed by heart rate variability (HRV), among elders. During 2009, 469 individuals (50 % males, mean age 75 ± 6 years old), permanent inhabitants of Ikaria Island, were enrolled. Among several sociodemographic, bioclinical, lifestyle, and dietary characteristics, and biochemical parameters related to cardiovascular risk, a digital, standard, 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and 5-min ECG monitoring were recorded.

Background: Osteopontin (OPN) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) have recently emerged as key factors in both vascular remodeling and development of atherosclerosis. Arterial stiffness has an independent predictive value for cardiovascular events. We evaluate the relationship between OPG, OPN serum levels and vascular function in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients.

Inflammatory process is essential for the initiation and progression of vascular remodeling, entailing degradation and reorganization of the extra-cellular matrix (ECM) scaffold of the vessel wall, leading to the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zing dependent endo-peptidases found in most living organisms and act mainly by degrading ECM components. Most MMPs are formed as inactive proenzymes and are activated by proteolysis.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of premature death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Recent evidence suggests that the interaction of "classic" and "non-classic" cardiovascular risk factors is an important contributor in excessive and accelerated CVD in patients with CKD. Indeed, the imposing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality of CKD patients corresponds to a significant extent in endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular calcification and volume overload.

Heart failure (HF) is a complex syndrome with high morbidity and mortality while, myocardial injury, hemodynamic overload, genetic, neurohormonal, inflammatory and biochemical factors are implicated in the development and progression of the disease. Interestingly, despite the development of several diagnostic tests, HF diagnosis remains clinical, based on symptoms and signs, while there is a poor relationship between symptoms and the prognosis of HF. Several biomarkers have recently been examined for their efficacy to predict outcome and assess prognosis of HF patients.

Adiponectin is an abundant plasma protein secreted from adipocytes. Its role in energy homeostasis is well-known, including the regulation of hydrocarbons and lipids metabolism as well as the improvement of insulin resistance. It has been thought to be a key molecule in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, which are epidemiological targets for preventing cardiovascular disease.

Coronary atherosclerosis is the pathophysiologic background of coronary artery disease. Vascular calcification is an actively regulated form of calcified tissue metabolism and a common feature of coronary atherosclerotic plaques. Interestingly, systematic research has revealed that vascular mineralization, is also a strong and independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

The role of inflammation in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases is well established. Systemic inflammation and immune system play a central role in atherogenesis. The strong dependence of the atherosclerotic process on both a state of continuous low grade inflammation and the presence of lipid abnormalities gave impetus to research the association between hyperlipidemia and inflammatory status.
