Effects of trigger point acupuncture treatment on temporomandibular disorders: a preliminary randomized clinical trial.

We compared the effects of trigger point acupuncture with that of sham acupuncture treatments on pain and oral function in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). This 10-week study included 16 volunteers from an acupuncture school with complaints of chronic temporomandibular joint myofascial pain for at least 6 months. The participants were randomized to one of two groups, each receiving five acupuncture treatment sessions.

Analgesic effects of acupuncture on pain after mandibular wisdom tooth extraction.

We evaluated the analgesic effects of acupuncture on postoperative pain by comparing patients who underwent routine tooth extraction alone (control group) and those who underwent tooth extraction in combination with acupuncture (experimental group) by the random allocation method. As teeth easy to extract. requiring no gingival incision (grade A) or those difficult to extract, requiring gingival incision or bone cutting (grade B).

Traumatic cardiac herniation diagnosed by echocardiography and chest CT scanning: report of a case.

A 62-year-old man who had suffered fractures of the left chest wall and hemothorax 1 year earlier was admitted to our hospital with multiple injuries as a result of a traffic accident. Chest drainage was immediately performed under the diagnosis of left hemothorax followed by immobilization of fractures of the femur and radius. On the second day after admission, he suddenly developed severe chest pain and dyspnea after sitting up in bed.

[Lung laceration caused by penetrating chest wall injury in Hanshin & Awaji earthquake: a case report].

A 36-year-old man having a left lower lobe laceration caused by penetrating chest wall injury was operated on 5 hours after Hanshin & Awaji Earthquake. At thoracotomy, significant destruction of the left lower lobe was observed. Therefore, we gave up repairing a lung, and performed left lower lobectomy, with a satisfactory outcome.

[Nineteen multiple primary cancer cases of 100 patients undergoing lung cancer resection].

In our department, half of 100 consecutive lung cancer resection cases were over the age of 70 years. In the same 100 patients, nineteen cases had multiple primary cancers. Sixteen cases had double, two cases had triple, one case had quadruple primary cancers.

[Severe obstructive necrotizing enterocolitis associated with carcinoma of the sigmoid colon: report of a case].

A 68-year-old male diagnosed as carcinoma of the sigmoid colon developed shock and cardiac arrest just 8 hours after the onset of ielus. After resuscitation, exploratory laparotomy was carried out and it revealed gangrene spreading from the sigmoid colon over the distal 150cm of the terminal ileum, separated from the carcinoma by a normal segment of the colon 13cm in length. All the mesenteric vessels were pulsating normally.

[A case of simultaneous bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax].

A 18-year-old man was admitted urgently complaining dyspnea, cyanosis and chest pain. The chest x-ray film revealed simultaneous bilateral pneumothorax. Chest drains were inserted immediately to the both chest cavities.

[Effects of maintenance treatment after high-dose intravenous gamma-globulin for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura].

High-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) produces a dramatic and substantial increase in platelet count, but the increased count tends to return rapidly to its pretreatment level. We studied the effects of immunosuppressive treatment aimed at the maintenance of platelet counts following the IVIG administration in ITP. Thirty-five patients with ITP were treated with IVIG, and then thirty-two of them with an immunosuppressant (azathioprine) and a glucocorticoid (prednisolone).

Ph1-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia associated with an isochromosome 17q.

We report a patient with Ph1-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) having i(17q) in whom bony lesions were the initial clinical manifestation. The patient was a 53-year-old male who began to have pains in his left hip early in March 1985. Relevant findings on admission included: WBC 21,300/microliters; blast cells 73.

[A case of localized pleural mesothelioma].

A case of localized pleural mesothelioma is reported. A 49-year-old man was operated for coin lesion detected on routine chest X-ray. A tumor arose from the visceral pleura of right lower lobe and was pedunculated.

[A case of extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma of the chest wall].

A case of extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma arising in the chest wall of a 15-year-old male is reported in this paper. His complaint was chest and back pain. Physical examination and laboratory data disclosed no abnormality.

Variation of plasma fibronectin levels in leukemia patients.

In the present study plasma fibronectin levels were determined in patients with hematopoietic malignancy, particularly leukemias, in an effort to clarify their clinical implications. Among leukemia patients, those with AML, ALL, ATL or CLL had various plasma fibronectin levels that were higher in some cases, while lower in others, as compared to normal control values. An elevation of the fibronectin level was noted often in APL, while lower fibronectin values were observed in many instances of CML.

[Ceftriaxone as a single agent in empirical therapy of infection in patients with hematologic disorders. Hanshin Infection Study Group].

For seventy episodes of infection in hematologic disorders mostly during the phase of severe granulocytopenia, a trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of a new third-generation cephalosporin, ceftriaxone (CTRX). The regimen consisted mainly of drip infusion of CTRX 2 g every 12 hours. The overall response rate achieved was 54.

[An autopsy study of immunoblastic lymphadenopathy (IBL)-like T-cell lymphoma in a patient previously treated with chemotherapy in colon cancer].

A 77-year-old man was admitted to our hospital, due to systemic lymph node swelling. Nine months before his admission, he had been given a right hemicolonectomy for a colon cancer, that had been followed by chemotherapy (MMC and Tegafur). Laboratory testing revealed these findings: RBC 217 x 10(4)/mm3, Hb 8.

[Efficacy and safety of cefbuperazone in severe infections complicating hematologic diseases Hanshin Infection Study Group].

Cefbuperazone (CBPZ) was administered to patients with severe infections complicating hematologic diseases to assess its efficacy and safety under such clinical conditions. Primary diseases in this series of 78 cases included; acute leukemia in 41 cases, chronic leukemia in 6 cases, other leukemia in 9 cases, malignant lymphoma in 13 cases, multiple myeloma in 3 cases, aplastic anemia in 5 cases and 1 other case. Types of infection included sepsis; proven or suspected, in 59 cases, pulmonary infection in 8 cases, upper respiratory infection in 5 cases, and other cases.

[Preoperative systemic chemotherapy (FAC) in 3 cases of advanced breast cancer].

Three cases of advanced breast cancer treated with preoperative systemic chemotherapy (FAC) were reported. Radical mastectomy was performed in all three cases after partial response to the systemic chemotherapy. Systemic chemotherapy itself is easy to manage and its resulting response rates and side effects are comparable to those of intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy.
