Background: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been shown in clinical trials to increase serum Mg levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, it is unclear whether this effect is similarly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and whether such an increase is observed immediately after treatment.
Methods: Our retrospective observational study included the 62 patients with CKD who started SGLT2 inhibitor therapy at our institution between 2017 and 2022 and who had complete data on serum Mg measurements at baseline and at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment.
Introduction: Lung adenocarcinoma with parathyroid hormone (PTH)-related hypercalcemia is uncommon.
Case Presentation: A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to anorexia and fatigue. Serum calcium (15.
There are numerous approaches for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR); however, access-related complications remain a point of concern. We analyzed consecutive patients who underwent TAVR for severe aortic stenosis via the brachiocephalic artery (BCA) without sternotomy (TBc group, n = 10) and via the trans-ascending aortic (TAo group, n = 8). The median BCA diameter and distance between the access point and suprasternal notch or superior margin of the clavicle were 11.

Thrombotic microangiopathy was initially suspected to have been caused by malignant hypertension. Antihypertensive medications did not improve his thrombocytopenia or renal dysfunction, and other diseases causing thrombotic microangiopathy were ruled out.

Cyanosis during pregnancy may increase the probability of premature birth or spontaneous abortion and may increase maternal cardiac complications.
Case Summary: We describe a case of a 24-year-old woman with diffuse multiple PAVMs localized to the left inferior lobe and chronic cyanosis.
Chloride transport by microbial rhodopsins is actively being researched to understand how light energy is converted to drive ion pumping across cell membranes. Chloride pumps have been identified in archaea and eubacteria, and there are similarities and differences in the active site structures between these groups. Thus, it has not been clarified whether a common mechanism underlies the ion pump processes for all chloride-pumping rhodopsins.

There are no studies evaluating the utility of stent expansion criteria along with the clinical and procedural factors in predicting target lesion revascularization (TLR) after contemporary IVUS-guided PCI.
Methods: OPTIVUS-Complex PCI study (Optimal Intravascular Ultrasound Guided Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) multivessel cohort was a prospective multicenter study enrolling 961 patients undergoing multivessel PCI including left anterior descending coronary artery using IVUS with an intention to meet the prespecified criteria for optimal stent expansion.
Patients with chronic kidney disease develop vascular calcification, owing to impaired calcium and phosphate metabolism. The prevention of vascular calcification is important to improve the prognosis of such patients. In this study, we investigated whether treatment with FYB-931, a novel bisphosphonate compound, prevents vascular calcification in rat aortic rings cultured in high-phosphate medium for 9 days, assessed by measurement of the calcium content and the degree of calcium deposition, visualized using von Kossa staining.

Endothelial cell injury is mainly responsible for ARDS. Many neutrophils and macrophages/monocytes, which are inflammatory cells that play a role in innate immunity, infiltrate the lung tissue in DAD.

Nevertheless, no reliable risk models incorporating both possibilities are currently available. We aimed to assess the accuracy of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)-derived models and the performance of a recalibrated model that included variables more applicable to TAVR.

Methods: Between June 2010 and December 2014, 55 consecutive inoperable or high surgical risk patients underwent TAVR with SAPIEN XT valves (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA, USA) for severe aortic stenosis at our institution. Among them, 2 patients were excluded from the analysis because one was converted to open surgery during the TAVR procedure and the other could not undergo TAVR due to device delivery failure.
The distal radial approach (DRA) has been proposed as an alternative approach for coronary angiography (CAG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI); however, the predictors of DRA failure and puncture site complications are unclear. Among 7153 consecutive patients undergoing CAG or PCI between November 2018 and January 2021, 3610 patients undergoing CAG or PCI with DRA were analyzed. The primary endpoint of this study was the procedural success, and the secondary endpoint of this study was puncture site complications during procedure.

We assessed the incidence and size of PMI and the impact of PMI on 10-year all-cause and cardiac deaths using competing risk analysis in 1,095 patients, including 453 patients with DM. All patients had normal preprocedural creatinine kinase-myocardial band levels and underwent their first elective sirolimus-eluting stent implantation for stable angina pectoris.

This study assessed prognostic factors associated with mortality of patients with critical COVID-19 who required ventilator management. Methods This single-center, retrospective cohort study used medical record data of COVID-19 patients admitted to an emergency ICU at a hospital in Japan between March 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021, and provided with ventilator management.
