Cast nephropathy is rare kidney disease with slow progression. It is associated with multiple myeloma (MM). In this study, we report a case of cast nephropathy in an 86-year-old woman who was previously independent in her activities of daily living (ADLs).

Useful Preoperative Simulation of Laparoscopic Surgery for Rectal Cancer in Patients with Kyphosis.

Kyphosis complicates abdominal surgery. Here, we report a case of rectal cancer in a patient with kyphosis who underwent successful laparoscopic surgery after a preoperative simulation. An 81-year-old woman with rectal cancer was admitted to our department, and laparoscopic surgery was planned.

Traditional and cultural behaviors in the community can be utilized for effective social prescribing.

Si nanowires/nanorods are known to enhance the cycle performance of the lithium-ion batteries. However, viable high throughput production of Si nanomaterials has not yet attained as it requires in general expensive gas source and low-rate and multiple-step approach. As one of the potential approaches, in this work, we report the fast-rate Si nanorod synthesis from low-cost powder source by the modified plasma flash evaporation and the fundamental principle of structural formation during gas co-condensation.

Recognition of Anemia in Elderly People in a Rural Community Hospital.

Anemia in the elderly is a common disease associated with increased mortality and hospitalization rates. It is not clear how adequately elderly patients are assessed and treated in actual clinical practice. This study clarifies the frequency of anemia recognition before assessment and the factors related to recognition among older people in a rural community hospital.

Association between Immunoglobulin G Levels and Adverse Effects Following Vaccination with the BNT162b2 Vaccine among Japanese Healthcare Workers.

The purpose of the study was to assess the association between the amount of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and the duration of adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccinations in the Japanese population. This cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2020 to August 2021 among workers at a community hospital. All participants received two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech) in March and April 2021.

The Perception of Rural Medical Students Regarding the Future of General Medicine: A Thematic Analysis.

Although the demand for general physicians has increased in Japan because of its aging population, medical universities primarily provide organ-based education; thus, medical students do not receive sufficient general medical education. The number of residents focusing on general medicine remains low; therefore, to understand the present situation regarding general medicine education, we attempted to clarify the views of medical students and the factors influencing them. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted in 12 medical students at Shimane University, and the results were analyzed through thematic analysis.

Changes in the Comprehensiveness of Rural Medical Care for Older Japanese Patients during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Help-seeking behaviors (HSBs) refer to how people use lay and medical care to address their symptoms and diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic may have changed older, rural patients' preferences and experiences regarding HSBs, thereby, affecting the comprehensiveness of medical support for communities. This study identified changes in the comprehensiveness of medical care for older, rural patients, who are often dependent on others for accessing medical services.

Quantitative evaluation of abnormal finger movements in myelopathy hand during the grip and release test using gyro sensors.

Previous studies have reported qualitative characteristics of myelopathy hand, but few studies have reported quantitative kinematic parameters of this condition. Our purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the abnormal finger movements in patients with cervical compressive myelopathy (CCM) (termed myelopathy hand) and to understand the characteristics of myelopathy hand during the grip and release test (GRT) using gyro sensors. Sixty patients with CCM (severe: n = 30; mild-to-moderate: n = 30) and sixty healthy adults (age-matched control: n = 30; young control: n = 30) were included in this study.

On remote islands, interprofessional collaboration is essential to support older adults who live at home, despite the limited number of healthcare professionals (HCPs). Therefore, it is important for HCPs to collect and share information about older adults with health problems. This study aimed to clarify how rural HCPs collaborate using limited resources to support older adults in remote islands.

A Rapidly Growing Small-Intestinal Metastasis from Lung Cancer.

Small-intestinal metastasis from lung cancer, although relatively rare, often causes intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal perforation, and gastrointestinal bleeding, making it an oncological emergency. Many patients have undergone emergency surgery for treatment of rapid progression of an intestinal metastatic lesion; however, information on changes in such metastases is lacking. We analyzed data from 4 patients with small-intestinal metastases from lung cancer who were treated during a 10-year period (January 2011 to December 2020) and for whom data on change in tumor diameter were available.

Introduction: Surgeons need precise information about motor deterioration risk during surgery for intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCTs). However, the conventional TcMsEP alarm criterion provides limited information with a less than or a more than single alarm criterion without any grades in between, resulting in false-negative and false-positive outcomes. Therefore, we developed a "seven-color TcMsEP grading system" for neuromonitoring to provide more graded information.

Anterior Atlas Fracture After C1 Laminectomy Which Was Successfully Treated by Brace Therapy: A Case Report.

Case: We report a case of a 67-year-old male patient who underwent a C1 laminectomy with laminoplasty at C2-3 because of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. At 6 weeks after surgery, neck pain occurred after minor trauma without neurological deterioration. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated C1 anterior atlas fracture with a 3-mm gap.

Detection of KRAS mutations in circulating tumour DNA from plasma and urine of patients with colorectal cancer.

Background: Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) is very useful for purposes of cancer genetics; however, it has some limitations. Recently, ctDNA in body fluids, such as urine, sputum, and pleural effusion, has been investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quantity of ctDNA derived from urine (trans-renal ctDNA) and the accuracy of KRAS mutation detection in relation to disease stage in colorectal cancer.

Family medicine is vital in Japan as its society ages, especially in rural areas. However, the implementation of family medicine educational systems has an impact on medical institutions and requires effective communication with stakeholders. This research-based on a mixed-method study-clarifies the changes in a rural hospital and its medical trainees achieved by implementing the family medicine educational curriculum.
