The first measurements of double-hadron production in deep-inelastic scattering within the nuclear medium were made with the HERMES spectrometer at DESY HERA using a 27.6 GeV positron beam. By comparing data for deuterium, nitrogen, krypton, and xenon nuclei, the influence of the nuclear medium on the ratio of double-hadron to single-hadron yields was investigated.

Single-spin asymmetries for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons are measured for the first time with transverse target polarization. The asymmetry depends on the azimuthal angles of both the pion (phi) and the target spin axis (phi(S)) about the virtual-photon direction and relative to the lepton scattering plane. The extracted Fourier component sin((phi+phi(S))(pi)(UT) is a signal of the previously unmeasured quark transversity distribution, in conjunction with the Collins fragmentation function, also unknown.

Double-spin asymmetries of semiinclusive cross sections for the production of identified pions and kaons have been measured in deep inelastic scattering of polarized positrons on a polarized deuterium target. Five helicity distributions including those for three sea quark flavors were extracted from these data together with reanalyzed previous data for identified pions from a hydrogen target. These distributions are consistent with zero for all three sea flavors.

Exclusive coherent and incoherent electroproduction of the rho(0) meson from 1H and 14N targets has been studied at the HERMES experiment as a function of coherence length (l(c)), corresponding to the lifetime of hadronic fluctuations of the virtual photon, and squared four-momentum of the virtual photon (-Q2). The ratio of 14N to 1H cross sections per nucleon, called nuclear transparency, was found to increase (decrease) with increasing l(c) for coherent (incoherent) rho(0) electroproduction. For fixed l(c), a rise of nuclear transparency with Q2 is observed for both coherent and incoherent rho(0) production, which is in agreement with theoretical calculations of color transparency.

The role of plasma proteins in the mechanisms of brain tissue damage in ischemic events remains to be clarified. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the presence of albumin in the extracellular fluid could induce damage to endothelial and neuronal cells. Neuronal cells from rat fetal brain (15 days) were cultured by using RPMI-1640 containing 10% Serum-Plus and endothelial cells from umbilical vein were also cultured in 96-well plates.

We have isolated and determined the nucleotide sequence of the structural gene (sodB) coding for one of the copper/zinc-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) isozymes from rice plants (Oryza sativa L.). The sodB gene is split into 8 exons spread about 2 kb of the chromosomal DNA, with the coding sequence beginning in the 2nd and ending in the 8th.

Detection of previous cerebral infarction on CT films of patients with no history of stroke is a common occurrence. The incidence of silent cerebral infarction was reported to be about 10 to 11 percent, but very few reports concerning asymptomatic cerebral hemorrhage available. The movement of extravasated endogenous protein induced by cold injury was investigated in the rat. Extravasated proteins were observed around the cold injury immediately after injury; within 3 hr they had moved into the ipsi- and contralateral hemispheres along the nerve fibres (routed protein migration). The water content in the areas where the extravasated protein was observed was increased, and NMR-CT scans (TR 2000 msec, TE 90 msec) showed high intensity patterns whose distribution and progression coincided with those of extravasated protein.

A rare case of reversible hemiballism due to putaminal pathological process in a 51-year-old woman is described. She was hospitalized for evaluation of hemiballism and muscle weakness on the left side. A cranial computed tomography scan demonstrated a high density lesion in the right putamen with enhancement on delayed scan.

This article demonstrates one clinical application of biofeedback treatment with a microvibration (MV) transducer to relieve functional tremors. A MV transducer, a kind of accelerometer, was originally developed to detect invisible tremors from the body surface but this equipment is also utilized to detect visible tremors to convert them to auditory signals. Our method uses almost the same procedure as electromyographic biofeedback treatment.
