Previous studies indicated that further investigation is needed to understand how insomnia disorder interacts with emotional processes. The present study is an ecological momentary assessment evaluating the link between emotional and sleep alterations in patients with insomnia. Physiological (heart rate and heart rate variability) and subjective (sleep and emotions) indices were observed for 5 days in patients with insomnia disorder (n = 97), good sleepers under self-imposed sleep restriction (n = 41), and good sleepers with usual amount of sleep (n = 45).

Systems metabolic engineering faces the formidable task of rewiring microbial metabolism to cost-effectively generate high-value molecules from a variety of inexpensive feedstocks for many different applications. Because these cellular systems are still too complex to model accurately, vast collections of engineered organism variants must be systematically created and evaluated through an enormous trial-and-error process in order to identify a manufacturing-ready strain. The high-throughput screening of strains to optimize their scalable manufacturing potential requires execution of many carefully controlled, parallel, miniature fermentations, followed by high-precision analysis of the resulting complex mixtures.

Purpose: Despite developments in both imaging and microbiological techniques, the final diagnosis of IE often remains challenging. In this single-center cohort study, we aimed to identify the specific indications for request of F-FDG-PET/CT in clinical practice and to evaluate the diagnostic benefit of this nuclear imaging technique.

An outbreak of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) occurred in an interdisciplinary intensive care unit, affecting 10 patients. Within hours of recognition of the spread of CRAb an intervention team was instituted for collection of available data, decision-making, communication and monitoring of all interventions performed, including cohorting, temporary stop of admissions, staff education, and enforcement of infection control measures. An area was defined for cohortation of patients colonized with CRAb, with a separate nursing team and a second set of mobile equipment.

Development and activity of plant roots exhibit high adaptive variability. Although it is well-documented, that physicochemical soil properties can strongly influence root morphology and root exudation, particularly under field conditions, a comparative assessment is complicated by the impact of additional factors, such as climate and cropping history. To overcome these limitations, in this study, field soils originating from an unique experimental plot system with three different soil types, which were stored at the same field site for 10 years and exposed to the same agricultural management practice, were used for an investigation on effects of soil type on root development and root exudation.

The venom composition of Pseudechis australis, a widely distributed in Australia reptile, was analyzed by 2-DE and mass spectrometric analysis. In total, 102 protein spots were identified as venom toxins. The gel is dominated by horizontal trains of spots with identical or very similar molecular masses but differing in the pI values.

Patient outcomes are reliant on nursing calibre, which in turn is dependent on the health of work environments and practice settings. The National Survey of the Work and Health of Nurses (NSWHN) examined a broad spectrum of nurses' work and health, with one finding of particular concern: Nurses have a higher rate of depression (1 in 10) than their counterparts (as found in other national surveys). This secondary analysis of the data focused on the outcome of depression in a subsample of the nurses surveyed by the NSWHN and examined associations between depression and work-related variables such as job strain, role overload, respect, social and employer supports, and nurses' perception of the quality of the care they provided.

The venom proteome of Bothrops alternatus, a venomous snake widespread in South America, was analyzed by 2-D electrophoresis followed by mass spectrometric analysis and determination of enzymatic activities. The venomic composition revealed that metallo- and serine proteinases play primary roles in the pathogenesis of the envenomation by this pitviper. The identified 100 venom components with molecular masses from 10 to 100 kDa belong to six protein families: metalloproteinases, serine/thrombin-like proteinases, phospholipases A(2), L-amino acid oxidases, disintegrins and thrombin inhibitors.

The different properties of laboratory- and synchrotron-based double-crystal setups for X-ray topographic applications are discussed as a basis for the realization of a versatile instrument allowing the investigation of all kinds of crystals with high strain sensitivity and without any reduction in image size. It appears that the use of a bendable highly perfect monochromator (silicon) achieves this goal, through the local adaptation of Bragg angles, to compensate either dispersion or a bending of the sample.

X-ray diffraction topographs of wafers produced by separation by implanted oxygen (SIMOX) show moiré fringes in both reflection and transmission geometry. These fringes reveal deformations of the order of 10(-6) to 10(-8) between the layer and the substrate of the SIMOX material. A new method for a quantitative analysis of moiré fringes is developed and allows reconstruction with a high sensitivity of the three components of the relative displacement field between layer and substrate directly from a set of topographs.

The theory of moiré fringes on X-ray diffraction topographs of bicrystals is derived from the dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction for the reflection (Bragg) and the transmission (Laue) case. The influence on the moiré fringes of the diffraction geometry, of the geometry of the sample, of its optical properties and of the topographic method is investigated. The perfect-crystal theory is also expanded to weakly deformed bicrystals.
