[A clinical study of the radiosensitization of aclarubicin].

Sixty six patients with an advanced or a relapsed cancer have been treated with a combination of radiation and aclarubicin (ACR). The average irradiation dose was 45 +/- 15 Gy, and the combined total dose of ACR ranged from 130 to 260 mg, depending upon the following differing schedules: 10 mg x 3 or 5/w, 20 mg x 2 or 3/w and 20 mg x 2/d x 2/w. The tumor response attained was 70%, including 30% who achieved a complete response.

[Clinical studies on urinary tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA): problems and improvement in determination].

The reliability of measurement of urinary TPA using a Prolifigen TPA kit (Sangtec, Sweden) was investigated, and an improved method for stabilizing TPA was tested. Samples were filtrated with a cellulose nitrate membrane filter to remove impurities as a possible cause of a high false positive rate which has been a problem in urinary TPA measurement. Serum TPA and Tween 40-treated urinary TPA was not adsorbed by the filter, whereas TPA in the non-treated urine showed a marked affinity to the filter.

Nephrectomy in situ: treatment of ureteral fistula due to progressive malignancy.

The authors report 2 patients with recurrent retroperitoneal neoplasms in whom ureteral fistulas were treated successfully by percutaneous transcatheter embolization of the renal artery with absolute ethanol. Angio-occlusive nephrectomy is suggested as an alternative to surgical nephrectomy in seriously ill and high-risk patients to preserve their quality of life.

Retroperitoneal Castleman's disease: a case report and brief review of tumors of the pararenal area.

We report a case of retroperitoneal Castleman's disease of the hyaline vascular type. The tumor was excised with the left kidney because of tenacious adhesion to the renal pedicle. We suggest that knowledge of Castleman's disease in the retroperitoneal area would help to avoid an unnecessarily extensive operation.

[Clinical studies on the measurement of urinary tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) levels using Prolifigen TPA kit "Daiichi"-II in urothelial cancers].

We have investigated the clinical significance of urinary tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) as a tumor marker for urothelial cancers. Urinary TPA levels were determined by the immunoradiometric assay of Prolifigen TPA Kit "Daiichi"-II in 486 healthy controls and 1835 patients with various diseases including 526 with urothelial cancers and 140 with prostatic cancer. The mean value of urinary TPA was 199 +/- 213 (1SD)U/1 in 486 healthy controls.

Occurrence of uroepithelial tumors of the upper urinary tract after the initial diagnosis of bladder cancer.

We treated 519 patients with primary bladder cancer, of whom 12 had upper urothelial tumor during followup. Almost all patients had superficial bladder cancer at diagnosis. All but 1 of 12 patients who underwent total cystectomy with ileal conduit diversion also underwent various transurethral procedures for treatment of the primary bladder lesions.

The long-term effects of citrate therapy (CG-120, 3 g/day or 4 g/day) were examined in 398 patients with upper urinary tract calculi. We studied the influence of citrate therapy on urinary and blood biochemistry in 353 of them. CG-120 caused a sustained increase in urinary citrate, urinary pH and potassium, but no substantial or significant changes in other urinary parameters (uric acid, phosphate, oxalate, sodium, chloride and urine volume).

Urinary citrate is an important determinant for crystallization of calcium salts, and recently oral administration of citrate has been suggested to be clinically useful in the management of renal stone disease. The effect of CG-120, a citrate compound (potassium citrate, sodium citrate and citric acid) produced by Dr. Madaus (Germany), on upper urinary tract stones was investigated in 398 patients in this study group.

The effect of an acute maternal stress on beta-endorphin and growth hormone releasing factor in the rat fetus.

Pregnant rats were injected with saline or L-tyrosine methylester HCl (200 mg/kg) and subjected to an acute forced immobilization stress on day 20 of gestation. At 10, 30, 60, and 120 minutes after the onset of stress, their fetuses were dissected out, and the contents of hypothalamic and pituitary immunoreactive beta-endorphin (IR-beta-EP) and hypothalamic immunoreactive growth hormone-releasing factor (IR-GRF) were determined by specific radioimmunoassays. The maternal stress arose a significant decrease of hypothalamic IR-beta-EP at 30 minutes, while pituitary IR-beta-EP slightly elevated at 30 minutes, then declined at 60 minutes.

[A modification of the estimation of urinary oxalate using a Sigma kit].

The Sigma kit for estimating urinary oxalate is an enzymatic procedure. However, some errors were encountered using the standard assay system of the kit. Firstly, an overestimate of oxalate may arise from the oxidation of ascorbate during the alkaline wash stage of the extraction of oxalate from urine.

Passive transfer of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis with lymphocytes collected from brains of immunized guinea pigs.

Lymphocytes were collected from the brains of guinea pigs immunized with syngeneic spinal cord emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant. Sixteen to 32 X 10(6) lymphocytes were inoculated into the vein of each inbred guinea pig (NIH 13). Recipient animals without clinical signs of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) were sacrificed 20 days later.

[The criteria of radiotherapy for treating carcinoma of the esophagus].

The criteria of radiation therapy is given for the treatment of a carcinoma of the esophagus, said criteria decided by a committee of the Japanese Association for Radiotherapy Systems at the request of the Japan Radiological Society. The indication for radiation therapy is described and adapted to the new TNM Classification, based on the depth of the invasion of the tumor. The depth of the tumor invasion is divided into 4 stages and the radiological images for each are shown.

[Sexual differentiation of social play and copulatory behavior in prenatally stressed male and female offspring of the rat: the influence of simultaneous treatment by tyrosine during exposure to prenatal stress].

The environmental stress in the late gestational life has been reported to induce impairments of androgen-dependent sex differentiation of the rat brain. This study was performed to investigate the effects of prenatal stress on the features of gender role behavior and copulatory behavior which are masculinized by perinatal androgens. Further, a possible counteraction of tyrosine to the long-term effects of prenatal stress was examined, because the supplementation of amino-acid precursor of catecholamines during the stress is known to maintain the content of catecholamines in the brain, which is considered to contribute to the differentiation of the brain.

[Adenomatous polyps with prostatic type epithelium: a report of two cases].

Two cases of adenomatous polyps with prostatic type epithelium are reported. The first case was of a 62-year-old male suffering from asymptomatic hematuria. Cystoscopic findings showed an urethral tumor in the prostatic urethra.

[Uroepithelial tumors of the upper urinary tract following bladder cancer].

Five hundred and nineteen patients with primary bladder cancer were treated between January, 1969 and December, 1984, 12 of whom had developed upper urothelial tumors. [Primary hyperparathyroidism in 23 cases].

Twenty-three cases of primary hyperparathyroidism were experienced at Wakayama Medical College Hospital and affiliated hospitals between January, 1969 and December 1985.
