Studies were performed on previously nephrectomized dogs to examine roles of hormonal factors in plasma potassium alterations in acute alkalosis. Respiratory and metabolic alkalosis were induced by hyperventilation and intravenous NaHCO3 or tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) infusion, respectively. Respiratory and NaHCO3-induced alkalosis provoked decreases in plasma potassium from the control value of 5.

An 18 years old female was admitted to hospital due to pancytopenia on May 25, 1987 and found to have petechiae, mild hepatomegaly and severe splenomegaly. The bone marrow was found to contain 12% of blast cells. Splenectomy was performed followed by CHOP therapy.

We examined the ultrastructure of right and left ventricular myocardial biopsies obtained prior to cardiopulmonary bypass in fourteen patients undergoing total correction of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Twelve patients were undergoing primary one-stage repair and two patients had had a previous Blalock-Taussig shunt operation. The ages of the patients ranged from 3 to 35 years.

We have studied retrospectively 68 children who presented with urolithiasis between 1965 and 1986. Male to female ratio was 1.83 to 1 and the mean age was 9.

Fistula between aortic pseudo-aneurysm and atrium occurred in two patients ten or thirteen years after initial Bentall's operation. Their chief complaints were edema of lower extremity, oliguria and dyspnea. Because the pseudo-aneurysm and fistula was suspected by continuous murmur and echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization and aortography were performed to make accurate diagnosis.

We studied 104 patients after cardiac operations to search for changes in peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets, mitogen responsiveness, and interleukin-2 production. Mononuclear cells obtained from 10 patients with cholecystectomy were examined as control samples. Cultures for phytohemagglutinin and interleukin-2 production were incubated in microtiter plates for 24 hours with cells labeled with tritium thymidine used as target cells.

We investigated the effect to myocardial protection with crystalloid cardioplegic solution (Kurume solution I (S-I)) during open heart surgery in 21 infants less than 3 months old. The mortality was 28.6% (6 cases) including 2 patients having peroperative severe acidosis or shock.

Fifty-six patients who underwent repeated open heart surgery for acquired valvular disease are presented. Their mean ages were 48 years and mean interval between initial and second operation were 6 years. Preoperative functional status (NYHA) were class II in 11, class III in 40 and class IV in 5.

We compared the case like acute GVHD (graft versus host disease) induced by blood transfusion with the cases after open heart surgery which received blood transfusion by the measurement of cell-mediated immunity. Furthermore, we investigated the etiology of GVHD in comparison with cases according to age. Seventy-three cases (under 60 years old: 55 cases, over 60 years old: 18 cases) underwent open heart surgery and the mean blood transfusion volume was 2368cc and the mean age was 52.

A case of DOMV associated with incomplete ECD in a 17-year old girl is presented. Preoperatively, the mitral valve was suspected to have two orifice divided by the bridging tissue with sector echocardiography. DOMV is very rare congenital malformation, and 25 cases of DOMV are reported in Japan.

The value of postoperative radiation therapy (RT) was investigated in 77 patients with esophageal cancer resected between 1977 and 1986. Surgical resection was palliative in 13 of these patients. Although seven of them underwent postoperative irradiation to the residual tumor, all of the patients died within one year.

Salivary prostaglandin concentrations were determined in 42 patients with major depressive disorder, 16 patients with minor depressive disorder, and 39 healthy control subjects. The diagnoses were made according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria. The patients with major depressive disorder had higher salivary prostaglandin concentrations than the control subjects, but the patients with minor depressive disorder did not.

The authors report four cases of the left atrial ball thrombus associated with mitral stenosis. Three of four which had floating ball thrombus in the left atrium presented with syncopal attacks and systemic embolism. Echocardiography was the most effective method for preoperative diagnosis of ball thrombus in the left atrium and mitralstenosis.

We report the eighth case of surgical removal of a papillary endocardial tumor. The surgical approach was aided by intraoperative two-dimensional echocardiography. The tumor was attached to the chorda tendinea of the mitral valve and was successfully removed via a left atrial approach.

Cardiac valve surgery was performed in 54 patients over the age of 60 between January 1982 and December 1986. This included 24 mitral, 23 aortic, 7 multiple valve surgery and 2 thrombectomies and 1 leakage repair of the aortic prosthetic valves. We reviewed these cases comparing with 60 younger patients under the age of 59 with particular emphasis on preoperative state, operative mortality, postoperative course and late results.

We report two patients with vasculo-Behçet's disease who had femoral and popliteal aneurysms. The resected aneurysms and occluded distal arteries were studied clinicopathologically. The most interesting features were prominent fibrosis of the adventitia including the surrounding tissue, venous occlusion, perivasculitis and deposits of C3, C4 and immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG and IgM) in the arterial wall and surrounding tissue.

A 49 year-old woman was hospitalized with headache and left-sided weakness. Computed tomographic scan and carotid angiogram revealed mycotic aneurysms of the bilateral middle cerebral artery with intracranial bleeding. Although all blood cultures were sterile, her physical examination suspected mitral regurgitation due to infective endocarditis and mycotic cerebral aneurysms.

We constructed a recombinant vaccinia virus (RVV) expressing envelope (env) glycoprotein (gp51) of bovine leukaemia virus (BLV): the expression of gp51 was detected by Western blot of the lysates of rabbit kidney cells infected with the RVV. The rabbits inoculated intradermally with the RVV alone failed to induce detectable anti-gp51 antibodies even 10 weeks after immunization. However, when these animals were boosted with inactivated BLV virion in saline, significant levels of anti-gp51 antibodies were induced as shown both in Western blot and immunodiffusion analyses.
