Spindle cell carcinoma arising at the buccal mucosa: a case report and review of the literature.

Aims: Spindle cell carcinoma (SPCC) is a subtype of squamous cell carcinoma, and it mainly occurs in the upper aerodigestive duct. On the other hand, it rarely arises in the head and neck region. The prognosis of this tumor is usually poor because of its highly malignant behavior, such as its high incidence of recurrence or metastasis to cervical lymph nodes.

Antioxidant capacity of synovial fluid in the temporomandibular joint correlated with radiological morphology of temporomandibular disorders.

We investigated the correlation between the antioxidant capacity of synovial fluid and radiological findings of intra-articular structures in patients with disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We recruited 21 patients (9 men and 12 women, aged 18-84 years of age) with such disorders, excluding myofascial pain and dysfunction syndrome, or other muscular disorders. The clinical variables recorded included age, sex, interincisal distance, and visual analogue pain scores (VAS).

Aspiration pneumonia associated with a double fracture of the mandible.

Aspiration pneumonia is one of the most life-threatening diseases in the elderly. A 73-year-old woman was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia after a mandibular fracture. Because her persistent aspiration pneumonia was accompanied by a diminished swallowing function that was believed to be due to a double fracture of the mandible, the patient underwent an open reduction while having pneumonia.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor arising at the mandibular ramus with an impacted tooth: a case report and mimic lesions.

Objectives: To consider the biologic behaviors of keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs) and ameloblastomas and dentigerous cysts.

Methods: A 63-year-old Japanese man presented with swelling and discomfort in the left cheek during jaw movement. Examination revealed a multilocular lesion within the mandible extending from the left second premolar to the left mandibular ramus and coronoid process; the lesion contained a deviated impacted tooth.

Background: Dysphagia is a serious complication of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in patients with head and neck cancer. Approximately 20% to 30% of patients who have dysphagia require feeding tubes. A novel procedure for transtracheal resection for recurrent thyroid cancer involving a trachea and esophagus.

Background: Surgery remains the main treatment for locally advanced thyroid cancers invading the trachea, esophagus, and recurrent laryngeal nerve. However, extensive resection of such tumors can sometimes involve difficulties and may result in the deterioration of the patient's quality of life. The surgeon should consider not only the patient's prognosis but also the preservation of postoperative function.

Impact of intra-arterial chemotherapy including internal carotid artery for advanced paranasal sinus cancers involving the skull base.

Background: The most significant problem of intra-arterial chemotherapy for advanced paranasal sinus carcinomas and residual cancers supplied by internal carotid artery (ICA) and involving the skull base is the lack of salvage therapies.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of intra-arterial chemotherapy including ICA infusion for treating advanced paranasal sinus carcinomas, which have invaded the skull base.

Methods: Forty-six patients with advanced paranasal sinus carcinomas supplied by ICA were treated by intra-arterial chemotherapy using CDDP and sodium thiosulphate (STS) as a neutraliser of CDDP toxicity.

Antitumor effects of tyropeptin-boronic acid derivatives: New proteasome inhibitors.

The proteasome degrades numerous regulatory proteins that are critical for tumor growth. Thus, proteasome inhibitors are promising antitumor agents. New proteasome inhibitors, such as tyropeptins and tyropeptin-boronic acid derivatives, have a potent inhibitory activity.

The skeletal stability after maxillo-mandibular osteotomy with a "physiological positioning strategy".

The aim of this study was to estimate skeletal and dental stability after maxillomandibular osteotomy with physiological positioning. Ten patients (7 men and 3 women) with skeletal mandibular prognathism were treated by conventional Le Fort I osteotomy for the maxilla and unfixed short lingual osteotomy for the mandible together with physiological positioning. We used cephalometric analysis to evaluate the skeletal and dental stability preoperatively, immediately after maxillomandibular osteotomy, and more than 1 year later.

Diagnostic role of magnetic resonance imaging in assessing orofacial pain and paresthesia.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of CT and MRI in evaluating orofacial pain and paresthesia. A total of 96 patients with orofacial pain and/or paresthesia were included in this study. The patients who underwent CT and/or MRI examinations were assessed, and the efficacy of CT and/or MRI examinations in detecting the causative disease of the orofacial pain and paresthesia was evaluated.

Comparison of the long-term effects on rabbit bone defects between Tetrabone and β-tricalcium phosphate granules implantation.

Tetrabone is a newly developed granular artificial bone. The 1-mm Tetrabone has a four-legged structure. In this study, the long-term effect of implanting Tetrabone or β-TCP granules in rabbit femoral cylindrical defects was evaluated.

Mutant IDH1-driven cellular transformation increases RAD51-mediated homologous recombination and temozolomide resistance.

Isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutations occur in most lower grade glioma and not only drive gliomagenesis but are also associated with longer patient survival and improved response to temozolomide. To investigate the possible causative relationship between these events, we introduced wild-type (WT) or mutant IDH1 into immortalized, untransformed human astrocytes, then monitored transformation status and temozolomide response. Temozolomide-sensitive parental cells exhibited DNA damage (γ-H2AX foci) and a prolonged G2 cell-cycle arrest beginning three days after temozolomide (100 μmol/L, 3 hours) exposure and persisting for more than four days.

Stepwise differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into osteoblasts using four small molecules under serum-free and feeder-free conditions.

Pluripotent stem cells are a promising tool for mechanistic studies of tissue development, drug screening, and cell-based therapies. Here, we report an effective and mass-producing strategy for the stepwise differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) and mouse and human induced pluripotent stem cells (miPSCs and hiPSCs, respectively) into osteoblasts using four small molecules (CHIR99021 [CHIR], cyclopamine [Cyc], smoothened agonist [SAG], and a helioxanthin-derivative 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)pyrido[4',3':4,5]thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamide [TH]) under serum-free and feeder-free conditions. The strategy, which consists of mesoderm induction, osteoblast induction, and osteoblast maturation phases, significantly induced expressions of osteoblast-related genes and proteins in mESCs, miPSCs, and hiPSCs.

[A case of lateral ventricle metastasis from gastric carcinoma].

Application of a real-time three-dimensional navigation system to various oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures.

The aim of this study was to confirm the effectiveness of a real-time three-dimensional navigation system for use during various oral and maxillofacial surgeries. Five surgeries were performed with this real-time three-dimensional navigation system. For mandibular surgery, patients wore acrylic surgical splints when they underwent computed tomography examinations and the operation to maintain the mandibular position.

Assessment of migrated foreign bodies in the maxillae by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

Two cases of foreign bodies that were incidentally observed on orthopantomographs are reported in this study. The foreign bodies were analyzed using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer to identify what the migrated foreign bodies were and what migration pathways they had taken. The removed metallic foreign bodies from the maxillae of 2 patients, who were referred to the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery of the University of Fukui Hospital, were analyzed using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer in the Department of Dental and Biomedical Materials Science, Nagasaki University.

Antidiabetic effect of nepodin, a component of Rumex roots, and its modes of action in vitro and in vivo.

Many active components derived from edible natural resources such as plant extracts have recently attracted attention for their potential use as functional foods or drugs for preventing and treating metabolic diseases such as diabetes. To obtain a novel modulator of glucose metabolism, we conducted screening of a small compound library in cultured L6 myotubes. We identified nepodin that stimulated glucose uptake dose-dependently in differentiated L6 myotubes.

Immediate Loading of Dental Implants Inserted in Edentulous Maxillas and Mandibles: 5-Year Results of a Clinical Study.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of immediately loaded full-arch, fixed, one-piece prostheses supported by dental implants inserted in completely edentulous maxillae and mandibles. Twenty-eight completely edentulous jaws in 27 patients were treated with screw-fixed provisional prostheses on the same day as implant insertion. A total of 189 implants were inserted into the jaws of the patients.
