Objectives: In Japan, population-based epidemiological data on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections are limited. To elucidate the epidemiology of RSV before the introduction of new prophylactic drugs, we conducted a population-based study during and after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Methods: This study was performed in four hospitals in Chiba City and three hospitals in Ichihara City.

Patients/methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 317 patients who were current smokers and underwent spine surgery between January 2014 and December 2019 at a single facility in Tokyo, Japan.

[A Case of Gallbladder Cancer with Long Survival Treated with Resection after Downstaging with GC Therapy].

A 68-year-old woman with a chief complaint of obstructive jaundice was referred to our hospital. She was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer with invasion to the liver, extrahepatic bile duct, right hepatic artery and portal vein. After endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage, she received chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin.

[Survey of Prophylactic Administration of Naldemedine for Opioid-induced Constipation].

Opioid-induced constipation (OIC), an adverse event that occurs due to opioid analgesics, reportedly causes poor quality of life and adherence to opioid analgesics in patients. Therefore, this issue must be addressed appropriately. Naldemedine (NAL), a peripherally-acting μ-opioid receptor antagonist, is currently recommended for treating OIC when other laxatives are ineffective, but there have been no clinical reports of NAL being used prophylactically for OIC.

[Lung, Lymph Nodes and Pleural Metastasis of Breast Cancer Developed Thirty-two Years after Radical Mastectomy:Report of a Case].

We report a case of distant metastases developed 32 years after radical mastectomy for right breast cancer. A 70s-year-old women visited the local hospital because of productive cough. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a 10 mm nodule in the right middle lobe, multiple lymph nodes swelling and small pleural nodules.

Case report of a Japanese patient with chronic renal failure who developed SARS-CoV-2 in a hospital cluster during treatment for acute respiratory failure: An autopsy report.

This article reports a clinical and histopathological perspective which noted not only COVID-19 pneumonia but also exacerbation of chronic renal failure potentially caused by thrombus in the kidney, possibly COVID-19-related lesions. The accumulation of autopsy cases will elucidate the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and aid in the development of effective therapeutics.

Immunogenicity and safety of routine 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccination outside recommended age range in patients with hematological malignancies and solid tumors.

Hematological malignancy and solid tumor are major risks for invasive pneumococcal disease. Thirteen-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) is recommended for immunocompromised patients aged 6 years and older and adults who had not received the vaccine previously. However, vaccination for these individuals is not publicly subsidized in Japan.

Application of integrative physiological approach to evaluate human physiological responses to the inhalation of essential oils of Japanese citrus fruits iyokan (Citrus iyo) and yuzu (Citrus junos).

This study investigated the effects of essential oil odors from Japanese citrus fruits, iyokan (Citrus iyo) and yuzu (Citrus junos), on human psychology and both the autonomic and central nervous systems. The inhalation of both essential oils significantly increased miosis rate and fingertip temperature and could induce parasympathetic dominance by suppressing sympathetic nerve activity. Oxyhemoglobin concentration in the prefrontal cortex increased after the inhalation of yuzu essential oil and decreased after the inhalation of iyokan essential oil.

Changes in gaseous concentration of alkylpyrazine analogs affect mouse avoidance behavior.

We developed a rapid and accurate method for quantifying gaseous phase odorants using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in conjunction with GC-MS and used our system to quantify alkylpyrazine analogs in the Y-maze. Rapid extraction of volatile compounds in the vapor phase achieved accurate quantitative analysis of gaseous alkylpyrazine analogs at several locations in the Y-maze. We also used a series of three SPME fibers to quantify changes in the concentration over time.

An allylarylation of electron-deficient alkenes with aryl boronates and allylic carbonates has been developed. This method allows access to a wide variety of carbon skeletons from readily available starting materials. Mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction is enabled by a cooperative catalysis based on merging Pd /Pd redox and Pd /Pd non-redox catalytic cycles.

Population-based study of a free rubella-specific antibody testing and immunization campaign in Chiba city in response to the 2018-2019 nationwide rubella outbreak in Japan.

Japan has not been able to eliminate rubella; as a result, the large rubella epidemic has occurred. Considering the complicated history of the vaccine policy in Japan, some susceptible populations became infected with rubella, resulting in an outbreak. We conducted a large serosurveillance against rubella in Chiba city after initiating free rubella-specific antibody testing and an immunization campaign during 2018-2019.

Analytical Efficacy of a Gas Mixer and Stabilizer for Laser Ablation ICP Mass Spectrometry.

The analytical efficacy of five gas mixers and five stabilizers on signal stabilization and washout time obtained for laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) was evaluated in the present study. In the case of gas mixers examined, a total of 95 patterns of their attitudes as well as different directions of the gas flows were examined, and it was found that the signal variation and the washout time were strongly dependent on these factors. Even in a simple Y-shaped fitting (Y-mixer), signal stability and washout time had large variations with respect to its different attitudes as well as gas flow directions.
