Hematologic characteristics of captive western barred bandicoots (Perameles bougainville) from Western Australia.

Background: The western barred bandicoot (Perameles bougainville) is an Australian marsupial species now considered endangered as a consequence of habitat destruction and predation. A recently discovered papillomatosis syndrome is hindering efforts to repopulate this species. Hematology reference intervals have been lacking for P bougainville, preventing optimal interpretation of hematology results from wart-affected and clinically normal animals.

Macmillan nurse facilitators: establishing a palliative resource nurse network in primary care.

Aim: to describe how a link nurse system for palliative care was established in primary care and report on an evaluation of the system undertaken as part of a larger evaluation of newly established Macmillan nurse facilitator posts.

Method: a range of data collection techniques was used to collect information relating to the link nurse system including interview, questionnaire and observation. Various sampling strategies were adopted for the different data collection methods.

Prospective multicenter trial comparing repeated immunosuppressive therapy with stem-cell transplantation from an alternative donor as second-line treatment for children with severe and very severe aplastic anemia.

We conducted a prospective multicenter study to compare the efficacy of repeated immunosuppressive therapy (IST) with stem-cell transplantation (SCT) from an alternative donor in children with acquired aplastic anemia (AA) who failed to respond to an initial course of IST. Patients with severe (n = 86) and very severe disease (n = 119) received initial IST consisting of antithymocyte globulin (ATG) and cyclosporine. Sixty patients failed to respond to IST after 6 months from the initial IST and were eligible for second-line treatment.

A novel virus detected in papillomas and carcinomas of the endangered western barred bandicoot (Perameles bougainville) exhibits genomic features of both the Papillomaviridae and Polyomaviridae.

Conservation efforts to prevent the extinction of the endangered western barred bandicoot (Perameles bougainville) are currently hindered by a progressively debilitating cutaneous and mucocutaneous papillomatosis and carcinomatosis syndrome observed in captive and wild populations. In this study, we detected a novel virus, designated the bandicoot papillomatosis carcinomatosis virus type 1 (BPCV1), in lesional tissue from affected western barred bandicoots using multiply primed rolling-circle amplification and PCR with the cutaneotropic papillomavirus primer pairs FAP59/FAP64 and AR-L1F8/AR-L1R9. Sequencing of the BPCV1 genome revealed a novel prototype virus exhibiting genomic properties of both the Papillomaviridae and the Polyomaviridae.

The presence of arachidonic acid-activated K+ channel, TREK-1, in human periodontal ligament fibroblasts.

Human periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts expressed following two-pore-domain K(+) channels, TWIK-2 > TREK-1 > TWIK-1 >> TASK-1 > TRAAK > TASK-2. TREK-2 message was not detectable. We found the presence of arachidonic acid-activated and mechanical stress-sensitive K(+) channel, TREK-1, in the PDL fibroblasts by patch-clamp technique.

Methamphetamine-induced hyperthermia and lethal toxicity: role of the dopamine and serotonin transporters.

We examined the hyperthermic and lethal toxic effects of methamphetamine in dopamine transporter (DAT) and/or serotonin transporter (SERT) knockout (KO) mice. Methamphetamine (45 mg/kg) caused significant hyperthermia even in the mice with a single DAT gene copy and no SERT copies (DAT+/- SERT-/- mice). Mice with no DAT copies and a single SERT gene copy (DAT-/- SERT+/- mice) showed significant but reduced hyperthermia when compared to wild-type mice after methamphetamine.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for Diamond-Blackfan anemia: a report from the Aplastic Anemia Committee of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Hematology.

Transfusion-dependent Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) patients opt for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as curative therapy. Clinical outcomes of 19 transplanted Japanese patients were analyzed. Prior to HSCT, 10 patients (53%) suffered hemosiderosis with organ dysfunction, and all eight with short stature (42%) had adverse effects of prednisolone.

A significant barrier to participation in community life for people with serious mental illness is the lack of decent, safe, affordable, and integrated housing of their choice linked with supportive services. The nation's affordable housing and mental health systems have historically failed to address consumers' housing needs and choices. The lack of housing has resulted in disproportionately high rates of homelessness and chronic homelessness.

A dynamic systems analysis of parent-child changes associated with successful "real-world" interventions for aggressive children.

Studies have shown that improved parenting mediates treatment outcomes for aggressive children, but we lack fine-grained descriptions of how parent-child interactions change with treatment. The current study addresses this gap by applying new dynamic systems methods to study parent-child emotional behavior patterns. These methods tap moment-to-moment changes in interaction processes within and across sessions and quantify previously unmeasured processes of change related to treatment success.

Klossiella quimrensis (Apicomplexa: Klossiellidae) causes renal coccidiosis in western barred bandicoots Perameles bougainville (Marsupialia: Peramelidae) in Western Australia.

Previous studies have described a range of Klossiella species parasitic in marsupial hosts. Klossiella quimrensis is the etiologic agent of renal coccidiosis in the peramelid marsupial hosts Isoodon obesulus and Perameles gunnii in Eastern Australia, but there is no previous report of klossiellosis in Western Australian peramelids. This study describes klossiellosis diagnosed by histology of renal tissue sections collected during necropsy of 20 Perameles bougainville between 2000 and 2005.

Methamphetamine-induced locomotor activity and sensitization in dopamine transporter and vesicular monoamine transporter 2 double mutant mice.

Rationale: The dopamine transporter (DAT) and the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) play pivotal roles in the action of methamphetamine (MAP), including acute locomotor effects and behavioral sensitization. However, the relative impact of heterozygous DAT and VMAT2 knockouts (KOs) on the behavioral effects of MAP remains unknown.

Objectives: To evaluate the roles of DAT and VMAT2 in MAP-induced locomotor behavior, we examined locomotor activity and sensitization in heterozygous DAT KO (DAT+/-), heterozygous VMAT2 KO (VMAT2+/-), double heterozygous DAT/VMAT2 KO (DAT+/-VMAT2+/-), and wild-type (WT) mice.

Gut microbiota: mining for therapeutic potential.

The resident microbiota of the human intestine exerts a conditioning effect on intestinal homeostasis, delivering regulatory signals to the epithelium and instructing mucosal immune responses. Pattern recognition receptors are key mediators of innate host defense, and in healthy individuals, the mucosal immune system exhibits an exquisitely regulated restrained response to the resident microbiota. However, in genetically susceptible hosts, unrestrained mucosal immune activation in response to local bacterial signals can contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease.

Heterozygous mutations in TREX1 cause familial chilblain lupus and dominant Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome.

TREX1 constitutes the major 3'-->5' DNA exonuclease activity measured in mammalian cells. Recently, biallelic mutations in TREX1 have been shown to cause Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome at the AGS1 locus. Interestingly, Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome shows overlap with systemic lupus erythematosus at both clinical and pathological levels.

Lymphangiosarcoma in two cats.

Lymphangiosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of the lymphatic endothelium that is rare in cats. This report describes two cases of feline lymphangiosarcoma that originated in the distal limb, causing intractable lymphoedema and serosanguineous discharge with ecchymoses in local and distant sites. In association with the neoplasia, one cat had cortical bone lysis of multiple metacarpal bones of the affected limb and the other had severe immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA).

A new eimeria species parasitic in western barred bandicoots, Perameles bougainville (Marsupialia: Peramelidae), in western Australia.

Feces from western barred bandicoots, Perameles bougainville, examined during routine monitoring of captive breeding colonies and wild populations were frequently found to contain oocysts. Fecal oocysts from 1 individual housed at Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre were allowed to sporulate in 2% potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) at room temperature. Sporulated oocysts are subspheroidal 18.

Disseminated cryptococcosis including osteomyelitis in a horse.

A 4-year-old Arab mare was diagnosed with disseminated cryptococcosis, including osteomyelitis of the proximal phalanx of the left hind limb, osteomyelitis with associated soft tissue granuloma of a rib and disseminated, large cryptococcal nodules in the lungs. The lesion in the dorsoproximal aspect of the proximal phalanx had a large area of cortical lysis with spiculated periosteal new bone and extensive soft tissue swelling. The affected rib had a pathological fracture.

Survival outcome after the first central nervous system relapse in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a retrospective analysis of 79 patients in a joint program involving the experience of three Japanese study groups.

In a retrospective review of the survival outcome of children with isolated central nervous system (CNS) relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), we identified 79 patients with CNS relapse among the eligible patients enrolled in ALL trials of 3 Japanese pediatric oncology study groups (Japanese Children's Cancer and Leukemia Study Group [JCCLSG], Tokyo Children's Cancer Study Group [TCCSG], and Japan Association of Childhood Leukemia Study [JACLS]) between 1989 and 1999. CNS relapses were diagnosed as the first adverse event between 1991 and 1999. The median age at the time of CNS relapse was 5.

Reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index in the context of detecting depression in diabetic patients.

The present study had two aims. The first was to evaluate the reliability and the validity of the Japanese version of the World Health Organization (WHO)-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5-J) as a brief well-being scale. The second was to examine the discriminatory validity of this test as a screening tool for current depressive episodes in diabetic patients.

Mechanisms of action of probiotics in intestinal diseases.

Intestinal microbiota is a positive health asset that exerts a conditioning effect on intestinal homeostasis. Resident bacteria deliver regulatory signals to the epithelium and instruct mucosal immune responses. Recent research has revealed a potential therapeutic role for the manipulation of the microbiota and exploitation of host-microbial signalling pathways in the maintenance of human health and treatment of various mucosal disorders.

Mouse oocytes within germ cell cysts and primordial follicles contain a Balbiani body.

The Balbiani body or mitochondrial cloud is a large distinctive organelle aggregate found in developing oocytes of many species, but its presence in the mouse has been controversial. Using confocal and electron microscopy, we report that a Balbiani body does arise in mouse neonatal germline cysts and oocytes of primordial follicles but disperses as follicles begin to grow. The mouse Balbiani body contains a core of Golgi elements surrounded by mitochondria and associated endoplasmic reticulum.

Temporal worsening of sleep-disordered breathing in the acute phase of myocardial infarction.

Background: Sleep apnea is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, but whether the severity of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) changes in the acute phase of myocardial infarction (MI) has not been well determined, nor has it been determined what type of SDB, central or obstructive, (CSA or OSA) is exacerbated.

Methods And Results: Polysomnography was performed in patients with acute phase of MI during the acute (days 3-5) and chronic (day 14) phases. On the same day, the ventilatory equivalent (VE)/carbon dioxide production (VCO(2)) slope, urinary catecholamines secretion and arterial carbon dioxide tension were assessed before sleep.

The immunohistochemical characterization of devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) in the Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii).

Immunohistochemical techniques were used to characterize the disfiguring and debilitating fatal neoplastic disease, devil facial tumor disease (DFTD), which has recently affected a significant proportion of the wild population of Tasmanian Devils (Sarcophilus harrisii). The diagnostic values of a number of immunohistochemical stains were employed to further characterize 50 representative cases. The neoplasms were negative for cytokeratin (0/48), epithelial membrane antigen (0/42), von Willebrand factor (vWF) (0/11), smooth muscle actin (SMA) (0/26), desmin (0/47), glial fibrillary acid protein (0/13), CD16 (0/13), CD57 (0/43), CD3 (0/18), and LSP1 (0/16).
