Oleogelation has recently received a great deal of attention in the food industry as a novel alternative technology that physically converts liquid oil into semi-solid gel. Since the functional characteristics of oleogels are dependent on the gelators or bioactive compounds incorporated, this study was undertaken to evaluate the rheological properties and oxidative stability of candelilla wax oleogels fortified with glycerol monostearate (GMS) and β-carotene, and also to investigate their applications to muffin as a shortening replacer. The interaction between candelilla wax and GMS contributed to strengthening the oleogel structure.

Looping of double-stranded DNA molecules with 100-200 base pairs into minicircles, catenanes, and rotaxanes has been suggested as a potential tool for DNA nanotechnologies. However, sharp DNA bending into a minicircle with a diameter of several to ten nanometers occurs with alterations in the DNA helical structure and may lead to defective kink formation that hampers the use of DNA minicircles, catenanes, and rotaxanes in nanoscale DNA applications. Here, we investigated local variations of a helical twist in sharply bent DNA using microsecond-long all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of six different DNA minicircles, focusing on the sequence dependence of the coupling between DNA bending and its helical twist.

Polypharmacy is common in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), making these patients vulnerable to the occurrence of potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs). We assessed the risk of ischemic stroke and major bleeding in the context of concomitant treatment with potential DDIs in patients with AF prescribed direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Using the common data model (CDM) based on an electronic health record (EHR) database, we included new users of DOACs from among patients treated for AF between January 2014 and December 2017 (n = 1938).

Article Synopsis
  • A dual agonist of glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and GLP-2 (GLP1/2-Fc) was tested in mice with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), conditions that currently lack FDA-approved treatments.
  • * The treatment showed significant improvements by reducing body weight, glucose levels, liver fat, and inflammation, while enhancing liver fibrosis, insulin sensitivity, and gut health.
  • * Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was used to further explore the protective effects of GLP1/2-Fc, indicating that it may enhance the treatment's outcomes when combined with other therapies.*
