Developing Indicators to Evaluate Instructor Management of Sports Centers for the People With Disabilities Based on Universal Design Principles in South Korea.

This study was conducted to develop evaluation indicators for instructor-led management of sports centers for the disabled using universal design (UD) principles in South Korea. These indicators have been developed through Delphi technique to identify the effectiveness of an instructor's management skills. There were 11 documents related to UD used in the literature review, and seven were related to the evaluation index.

Social determinants of health and cancer screening implementation and outcomes in the USA: a systematic review protocol.

Background: Improving the delivery, uptake, and implementation of cancer screening to meet evidence-based recommendations is needed to reduce persistent cancer health disparities in the USA. Current national public health targets emphasize the role of social determinants of health (SDOH) on cancer screening. However, there remains a need to explicate these linkages, toward the goal of identifying and implementing effective interventions that target and address SDOH to reduce inequities in cancer screening.

Grounding implementation science in health equity for cancer prevention and control.

Background: The past decade of research has seen theoretical and methodological advances in both implementation science and health equity research, opening a window of opportunity for facilitating and accelerating cross-disciplinary exchanges across these fields that have largely operated in siloes. In 2019 and 2020, the National Cancer Institute's Consortium for Cancer Implementation Science convened an action group focused on 'health equity and context' to identify opportunities to advance implementation science. Polidocanol monotherapy for a superficial orbital venous malformation in a horse.

Objective: To describe the use of 1% polidocanol as the sole treatment for a superficial orbital venous malformation in a horse.

Animal: A 23-year-old Welsh Cobb cross gelding with a distensible swelling affecting the left lower eyelid, and secondary palpebral margin abnormalities and superficial keratitis.

Procedure: Color flow Doppler ultrasonography revealed non-pulsatile blood flow within the tortuous vascular network most consistent with a superficial orbital venous malformation appearing to involve the lateral palpebral and transverse facial veins.

Rural and urban differences in the implementation of Virtual Integrated Patient-Aligned Care Teams.

Purpose: Workforce shortages contribute to geographic disparities in accessing primary care services. An innovative, clinic-to-clinic videoconferencing telehealth program in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) called the Virtual Integrated Patient-Aligned Care Teams (V-IMPACT) was designed to increase veterans' access to primary care and relieve workforce shortages in VA primary care clinics, including in many rural areas. This paper describes trends in clinic sites and veteran uptake of the V-IMPACT program, a model that delivered remote, team-based primary care services, from fiscal years (FY)2013-2018.

Prospective F-18 FDOPA PET Imaging Study in Human PD.

Purpose: We present the findings of our final prospective study submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for New Drug Application (NDA) approval for the use of 3,4-dihydroxy-6-[18F]fluoro-l-phenylalanine (F-18 FDOPA) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging for Parkinson's disease (PD).

The disconnect between visual assessment of air trapping and lung physiology for assessment of small airway disease in scleroderma-related interstitial lung disease: An observation from the Scleroderma Lung Study II Cohort.

Objective: To explore the presence of small airway disease (SAD) and emphysema in scleroderma-related interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) and to evaluate the physiologic and clinical correlates of SAD in SSc-ILD.

Methods: Thoracic high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images obtained from the Scleroderma Lung Study II (SLSII) participants were reviewed by a group of thoracic radiologists. The presence of SAD was assessed by visual assessment for air trapping.

Emphysema Progression at CT by Deep Learning Predicts Functional Impairment and Mortality: Results from the COPDGene Study.

Background Visual assessment remains the standard for evaluating emphysema at CT; however, it is time consuming, is subjective, requires training, and is affected by variability that may limit sensitivity to longitudinal change. Purpose To evaluate the clinical and imaging significance of increasing emphysema severity as graded by a deep learning algorithm on sequential CT scans in cigarette smokers. Materials and Methods A secondary analysis of the prospective Genetic Epidemiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPDGene) study participants was performed and included baseline and 5-year follow-up CT scans from 2007 to 2017.

The use of renin angiotensin aldosterone system inhibitors may be associated with decreased mortality after cancer surgery.

Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors are antihypertensive agents with conflicting results on protective effects against some types of cancer. In light of these controversies, we aimed to study the effects of RAAS inhibitors in patients undergoing cancer surgery. From March 2010 to December 2019, consecutive adult patients with antihypertensive drug prescription at discharge after cancer surgery were enrolled and divided into two groups according to RAAS inhibitors prescription.

Quantitative imaging analysis detects subtle airway abnormalities in symptomatic military deployers.

Background: Exposure to inhalational hazards during post-9/11 deployment to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan puts military personnel at risk for respiratory symptoms and disease. Pulmonary function and qualitative chest high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) are often normal in "deployers" with persistent respiratory symptoms. We explored the utility of quantitative HRCT imaging markers of large and small airways abnormalities, including airway wall thickness, emphysema, and air trapping, in symptomatic deployers with clinically-confirmed lung disease compared to controls.

Collaboration networks of the implementation science centers for cancer control: a social network analysis.

Background: Multi-center research initiatives offer opportunities to develop and strengthen connections among researchers. These initiatives often have goals of increased scientific collaboration which can be examined using social network analysis.

Methods: The National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded Implementation Science Centers in Cancer Control (ISC) initiative conducted an online social network survey in its first year of funding (2020) to (1) establish baseline network measures including the extent of cross-center collaboration and (2) assess factors associated with a network member's access to the network such as one's implementation science (IS) expertise.

Association Between Perioperative Adverse Cardiac Events and Mortality During One-Year Follow-Up After Noncardiac Surgery.

Background Cardiac complications are associated with perioperative mortality, but perioperative adverse cardiac events (PACEs) that are associated with long-term mortality have not been clearly defined. We identified PACE as a composite of myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, congestive heart failure, arrhythmic attack, acute pulmonary embolism, cardiac arrest, or stroke during the 30-day postoperative period and we compared mortality according to PACE occurrence. Methods and Results From January 2011 to June 2019, a total of 203 787 consecutive adult patients underwent noncardiac surgery at our institution.

Risk factors associated with repeated epidural blood patches using autologous blood.

Background: An epidural blood patch (EBP) is a procedure to treat intracranial hypotension that does not respond to conservative treatment. EBPs are commonly repeated when the symptoms persist. In this study, we used a large single-center retrospective cohort and evaluated the factors associated with repeated EBPs.

Diagnostic performance of automated, streamlined, daily updated exome analysis in patients with neurodevelopmental delay.

Background: The diagnostic yield of whole-exome sequencing (WES) varies from 30%-50% among patients with mild to severe neurodevelopmental delay (NDD)/intellectual disability (ID). Routine retrospective reanalysis of undiagnosed patients has increased the total diagnostic yield by 10-15%. Here, we performed proband-only WES of 1065 patients with NDD/ID and applied a prospective, daily reanalysis automated pipeline to patients without clinically significant variants to facilitate diagnoses.

Carbon Dioxide Reactivity of Brain Tissue Oxygenation after Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.

Background: We investigated how changes in partial pressure of brain tissue oxygenation (PbtO2) relate to end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) after pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: Dynamic structural equation modeling (DSEM) was used to investigate associations between EtCO2 and PbtO2, with positive associations indicating intact CO2 reactivity of PbtO2, and negative associations indicating impaired reactivity. Sub-analyses were performed to investigate associations of PbtO2 to intracranial pressure (ICP), arterial blood pressure (ABP) and cerebral regional oximetry (rSO2).

Assessing the Needs of People with Disabilities for Physical Activities and Sports in South Korea.

This study's objective was to understand the physical activities and sports-related needs of people with disabilities in South Korea and how those needs should be reflected in policy and practice to improve these people's quality of life. Accordingly, focus group interviews were conducted with 35 people with disabilities who had participated in physical activities. Interviews were conducted one-on-one or in small groups of three or four.

Autoantibody profile in a Malaysian cohort of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

We report on our cohort of patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) who fulfilled the 2010 diagnostic criteria of CIDP. Patients were consecutively recruited and their demographics, clinical features and serological analysis of autoantibodies against neurofascin (NF)-155, NF-186, contactin-1 (CNTN1) and contactin-associated protein 1 were obtained. A total of 26 patients for which there was serologic testing were included: 22 typical CIDP, 3 distal CIDP and 1 multifocal CIDP.

Considerations and opportunities for multilevel HPV vaccine communication interventions.

From 2016 to 2019, the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded three Special Interest Projects focused on developing and testing multilevel HPV vaccination communication interventions. In this commentary, we highlight lessons learned from the funded projects, including the importance of engaging community members in the early stages of the research process, the challenges of evaluating multilevel interventions, and the need to consider stakeholder implementation preferences.

Timing and Duration of Facial Nerve Dysfunction After Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis for Robin Sequence.

Objective: Collect data from craniofacial surgeons to analyze mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) protocols, and facial nerve dysfunction (FND) to characterize this common, but poorly documented complication after MDO in infants with Robin Sequence (RS).

Design, Setting, And Participants: A 16-question anonymous survey designed through REDCap was digitally distributed to members of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association and International Society of Craniofacial Surgery (ISCFS).

Main Outcome Measure(s): Demographic information, MDO perioperative variables, surgeon experience with FND after MDO for patients with RS, and the timing and duration of FND were analyzed.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-secreting neurons control fertility. The release of GnRH peptide regulates the synthesis and release of both luteinizing hormone (LH) and Follicle stimulation hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary. While it is known that dopamine regulates GnRH neurons, the specific dopamine receptor subtype(s) involved remain unclear.

Preoperative 2D-echocardiographic assessment of pulmonary arterial pressure in subgroups of liver transplantation recipients.

Background: The clinical efficacy of preoperative 2D-echocardiographic assessment of pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) has not been evaluated fully in liver transplantation (LT) recipients.

Methods: From October 2010 to February 2017, a total of 344 LT recipients who underwent preoperative 2D-echocardiography and intraoperative right heart catheterization (RHC) was enrolled and stratified according to etiology, disease progression, and clinical setting. The correlation of right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) on preoperative 2D-echocardiography with mean and systolic PAP on intraoperative RHC was evaluated, and the predictive value of RVSP > 50 mmHg to identify mean PAP > 35 mmHg was estimated.

Shed syndecan-2 enhances colon cancer progression by increasing cooperative angiogenesis in the tumor microenvironment.

Although shed syndecan-2 potentiated the tumorigenic activities of colon cancer cells, how shed syndecan-2 increases this tumorigenic potential remains unclear. Using an orthotopic mouse model of colon cancer, we show that shed syndecan-2 increases colon cancer progression by cooperatively promoting angiogenesis. Co-administration with a synthetic peptide of shed syndecan-2 (S2LQ) enhanced the survival and tumor engraftment of luciferase-expressing CT26 colon adenocarcinoma cells orthotopically implanted into the cecum of BALB/c mice.

Analysis of nationwide hemophilia care: A cohort study using two Japanese healthcare claims databases.

Background And Aims: In many developed countries, hemophilia care is provided by specialized centers which can offer standardized high-quality care for patients and collect data for patient registries. However, in countries with less centralized provision of hemophilia care, registry data lacks accuracy and medical care is inconsistent among providers. Claims databases can be an alternative for obtaining nationwide data on hemophilia care, and we applied this approach to evaluate inequalities in hemophilia care in Japan.

Three-dimensional analysis of dermal backflow in cancer-related lymphedema using photoacoustic lymphangiography.

Background: Dermal backflow (DBF), which refers to lymphatic reflux due to lymphatic valve insufficiency, is a diagnostic finding in lymphedema. However, the three-dimensional structure of DBF remains unknown. Photoacoustic lymphangiography (PAL) is a new technique that enables the visualization of the distribution of light-absorbing molecules, such as hemoglobin or indocyanine green (ICG), and can provide three-dimensional images of superficial lymphatic vessels and the venous system.

Improving bedside dispensing services through early medication discharge planning: a pre-post intervention study.

Background: Delays in producing discharge prescriptions have hindered the provision of bedside dispensing services (BEDISC) that enable medication reconciliation and pharmaceutical intervention, which is an important element in transitional care medication safety. We aimed to assess the impact of early medication discharge planning on the delivery of BEDISC in terms of the rate of bedside dispensing, medication errors, and cost-saving from medication reconciliation by reusing patient's own medicines (POMs).
