The envelope (env) protein of SARS-CoV-2, a pivotal component of the viral architecture, plays a multifaceted role in viral assembly, replication, pathogenesis, and ion channel activity. These features make it a significant target for understanding virus-host interactions and developing vaccines to combat COVID-19. Recent structural studies provide valuable insights into the conformational dynamics and membrane topology of the SARS-CoV-2 env protein, shedding light on its functional mechanisms.

Akabane virus (AKAV) is an arbovirus belonging to the family Bunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus. AKAV consists of three-segment (L, M, and S RNA segments), negative single-stranded RNA. The aim of this study was to investigate an in situ hybridization method (ISH) in a Vero E6 cell line infected with Akabane virus.

Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a member of the Gammaretrovirus genus, which has two genotypes in cats: endogenous (replication-defective provirus) and exogenous (replication-competent). In this study, 550 cats were examined, and 112 of them (20.36%) were found to have the endogenous FeLV (enFeLV) genotype.

Acute demyelinating leucoencephalomyelitis was the most conspicuous microscopic change in the brain and spinal cord of kids infected with caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV). TUNEL positivity and labelling of anti-bax and anti-caspases-3, -8 and -9 were found in a distinct population of glial cells, mainly at the edges of the demyelinated plaques and perivascular areas and, to a lesser extent, in neurons. Double labelling revealed that most of these apoptotic cells in the demyelinated plaques were astrocytes and a few were oligodendroglia.

Background: Domestic cat hepadnaviruses (DCHs) have been described as a novel virus that can infect cats.

Objective: The aim of our study is the first identification and molecular characterizations of DCH infection in Turkish domestic cats.

Methods: The blood, organ and ascites fluid samples from 550 cats were randomly sampled.

Introduction: The difficulty of the follicular unit excision (FUE) hair transplantation procedure is currently attributed to hair curliness and subsurface angulation. Patients possessing the curliest hair shafts are considered the most challenging. Consequently, patients with these features are often denied FUE.

The rabies infection is a zoonotic viral disease in humans and is spread by both wild and domestic carnivores. This study aimed to molecularly characterize the field strains of the rabies virus circulating in Turkey between 2013 and 2020. Brain samples obtained from 16 infected animals (eight cattle, one donkey, three foxes, three dogs, and one marten) were tested.

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease-19) pandemic affected more than 180 million people around the globe, causing more than five million deaths as of January 2022. SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), the new coronavirus, has been identified as the primary cause of the infection. The number of vaccinated people is increasing; however, prophylactic drugs are highly demanded to ensure secure social contact.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) causes a multisystemic fatal disease, briefly named as distemper, in domestic and wild animals. Molecular characterization studies serve to identify local strains, accordingly, helps to determine the scope of vaccination in prevention of distemper. We aimed with this study to update the molecular status of CDV in domestic dogs in Turkey.

In this study, positive blood and organ samples were obtained from different mixed herds of sheep and cattle against ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) infection. Target-positive DNA was sequenced and compared with worldwide distributed OvHV-2 sequences. Tegument gene (422 base pairs) and glycoprotein B (gB) gene (2800 base pairs) amplicons of OvHV-2 genome were used for understanding of epidemiology of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) infection in Turkey.

Papillomaviruses are oncogenic DNA viruses and induce hyperplastic benign lesions of both cutaneous and mucosal tissues in their various hosts, including many domestic and wild animals as well as humans. There are some Papillomavirus genotypes that can infect hosts different from their own, such as BPV 1 and BPV 2 originated from cattle, which can also infect horses and are responsible for fibroblastic tumours in horses. This review article summarizes the origin and evolution of papillomaviruses as an etiological agent in the historical process.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on isolating and characterizing SARS-CoV-2 viruses in Anatolia to better understand their propagation and effects in lab settings and animal models.
  • Researchers obtained two viral isolates from infected individuals and analyzed their growth in Vero E6 cells, noting cell damage occurring by day five and similar infectivity across isolates.
  • Genome sequencing showed that the isolates were closely related to the original virus, with limited diversity and a notable spike protein mutation (D614G), while causing non-fatal infections in mice and affecting multiple organ systems.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is the most prominent retrovirus in cats. Molecular studies on FIV are of great importance to enable further studies, for example, understanding the pathogenesis and developing improved vaccines. We aimed to elucidate the molecular status of FIV and provide a detailed characterization of FIV in Turkey because at present there is very limited information available in the literature.

Article Synopsis
  • Bovine respiratory infections are a major economic issue for the cattle industry globally, including in Turkey, with Influenza D virus (IDV) potentially contributing to these diseases.
  • A study was conducted to investigate the presence of IDV in cattle across Turkey, particularly in farms with high rates of respiratory disease and calf mortality.
  • Out of 76 samples collected from 12 herds, IDV was identified in three cattle, with genetic analysis revealing a 95% similarity to strains found in Europe and the U.S., underscoring the need for ongoing monitoring of this virus in the Turkish cattle industry.

Feline Foamy Virus (FFV) is an important retroviral agent affecting domestic cats in Turkey that has been studied less intensively than Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). Accordingly, we aimed to investigate the presence and prevalence of FFV among domestic cats by molecular techniques. PCR was used to amplify the gag-pol gene overlap in order to detect the presence of FFV.

As ubiquitous pathogens, bovine virus diarrhea viruses (BVDVs) in cattle have been reported several times in Turkey. Over time, the frequency and importance of this infection has increased for the livestock industries. A total of 1291 animals were sampled from a dairy herd in Turkey suspected of BVDV clinical signs, for instance, reproductive failures (abortion, congenital malformations in calves, repeat breeding, etc.

In this study a mink showing hard pad disease like symptoms was euthanised. Heart blood and various tissue samples collected during necroscopy and tested by specific RT-PCR were found positive for CDV. H and F gene segments of the CDV strain was also partially sequenced using the appropriate primers, and subsequently the sequences were analysed and compared with same gene fragment sequence of other CDV isolates from different countries.

To determine why serum from small ruminants infected with ruminant pestiviruses reacted positively to classical swine fever virus (CSFV)-specific diagnostic tests, we analyzed 2 pestiviruses from Turkey. They differed genetically and antigenically from known Pestivirus species and were closely related to CSFV. Cross-reactions would interfere with classical swine fever diagnosis in pigs.
