The United Nations, through its subsidiary agency United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), has put in such resources to curb infant mortality in pursuit of the Sustainable development goals (SDG). Nevertheless, the issue of under-five mortality is still persistent in so many developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this study investigated the long-term and short-term impacts of solid waste, urbanization, and pollution on under-five mortality, employing the Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and the dynamic Autoregressive distributed lag (DARDL) models for the empirical investigations and robustness checks, respectively.

Efficacy and Safety of Adsorptive Granulocyte and Monocyte Apheresis in Elderly and Pregnant Patients With Ulcerative Colitis.

In patients with active ulcerative colitis (UC), adsorptive granulocyte/monocyte apheresis (GMA) is expected to promote remission. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of GMA in patients with active UC. Twenty-one UC patients including five pregnant or lactating mothers and four elderly patients (aged >60 years) received up to 10 GMA sessions.

¹H NMR spectroscopic quantification of plasma metabolites in dialysate during hemodialysis.

We used ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to assess metabolic responses in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). We collected 71 samples of plasma and dialysate from 10 patients before, during, and after HD. We used the dialysate as a possible substitute for blood plasma to quantify small metabolites by ¹H NMR.

The duration of functioning of a subcutaneous implantable port for the treatment of hematological tumors: a single institution-based study.

Background: Although subcutaneous implantable ports have been indicated as venous access for chemotherapy, these devices have not been used routinely for hematological tumors.

Methods: Between May 2006 and April 2009, 39 ports were implanted in 37 patients with hematological tumors and 16 ports were implanted in 14 patients with nonhematological tumors. The patients were treated with standard/first-line and/or salvage/second-line or greater chemotherapy, and were prospectively followed until port removal, death, or the end of the study.

Persistent elevation of plasma osteopontin levels in HIV patients despite highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Cadmium purification and quantification using immunochromatography.

One of the pathways by which cadmium enters human beings is through the consumption of agricultural products. The monitoring of cadmium has a significant role in the management of cadmium intake. Cadmium purification and quantification using immunochromatography were conducted in this study as an alternative means of cadmium analysis.

Monoclonal antibody to trivalent chromium chelate complex and its application to measurement of the total chromium concentration.

Isothiocyanobenzyl group-appended ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used to covalently couple Cr(III) x EDTA to keyhole limpet hemocyanin for use as an immunogen. An obtained monoclonal antibody (RD3G4) bound to Cr(III) x EDTA with an equilibrium dissociation constant (K(d)) of 9.7 nM, which was 100-fold tighter than the K(d)s for the other tested EDTA-metal complex.

Simple method to reduce interference from excess magnesium in cadmium immunoassays.

In order to develop a rapid inexpensive test for cadmium in rice, we identified an antibody specific for cadmium-EDTA complexes; this antibody binds to cadmium-EDTA with a Kd of approximately 10(-8) M. Although the antibody's cross reactivity to magnesium was minimal (Kd approximately 10(-5) M), the high toxicity of cadmium coupled with the high natural occurrence of magnesium in rice resulted in a situation where magnesium interfered with cadmium determination and resulted in falsely elevated estimates of cadmium. Fortunately, the formation constant of EDTA for cadmium is approximately 5 x 10(7) times higher (at pH 7) than the formation constant of EDTA for magnesium, and we were able to eliminate the magnesium interference by judicious selection of the EDTA concentration used in the assay.

We report a case of complete disappearance of multiple lung metastases and mediastinal lymphnode metastasis by intravenous administration of 5-fluorouracil/cisplatin (FP) after operation for primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A 54-year-old male was diagnosed with HCC associated with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. He also had a single lung metastasis at the time of diagnosis.
