Background: Nigeria adapted the WHO package of care for Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) in 2020. The package includes CD4 + cell count testing to identify People Living with HIV (PLHIV) with AHD, screening and treatment of opportunistic infections, rapid antiretrovirals (ART) initiation, and intensive adherence follow-up. The national program adopted a phased approach in the rollout of the AHD package of care to learn lessons from a few representative health facilities before scaling up across the country.

Methods: We compared associations of (1) interactive antenatal maternal jaundice instruction with postnatal reinforcement, (2) standard postnatal instruction, and (3) no maternal instruction with the incidence of ABE among 647 jaundice admissions stratified for risk factors identified in initial descriptive analysis.

Further expansion of SMC is planned, extending to 21 states with four or five monthly cycles. Background: Hydroxyurea has been shown to positively modify sickle cell disease pathogenesis, but its use is low among Nigerian sickle cell anaemia (SCA) patients because of effectiveness and safety concerns.
Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of hydroxyurea in 54 SCA children aged 4-17 years. Clinical and haematological parameters were compared at baseline and 12 months after hydroxyurea therapy.
In non-anaemic children with malaria, early-appearing anaemia (EAA) is common following artemisinin-based combination treatments (ACTs) and it may become persistent (PEAA). The factors contributing to and kinetics of resolution of the deficit in haematocrit from baseline (DIHFB) characteristic of ACTs-related PEAA were evaluated in 540 consecutive children with malaria treated with artemether-lumefantrine, artesunate-amodiaquine or dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine. Asymptomatic PEAA occurred in 62 children.
