The introns of the gene encoding the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) GAS5 host up to 10 C/D box small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs). However, whether there is a regulatory and functional relationship between these snoRNAs and GAS5 is unknown. Here, we show that the expression of SNORD80, but not the other snoRNAs, parallels GAS5 expression and is regulated alongside GAS5 in response to cellular stress.

Herein, we compare the different experimental regimes used to induce testicular heat stress and summarise their impact on sperm production and male fertility. Using semen data from 1271 ejaculates (79 different bulls, 11 different breeds) we have investigated the variability of semen quality in cattle living in sub-tropical conditions. Modelling shows definitive evidence of seasonal variation. Semen quality from the same bulls had a 90% "pass rate" for cryopreservation purposes in winter, dropping to less than 50% in summer.

After ejaculation, mammalian spermatozoa must undergo a process known as capacitation in order to successfully fertilize the oocyte. Several post-translational modifications occur during capacitation, including sialylation, which despite being limited to a few proteins, seems to be essential for proper sperm-oocyte interaction. Despite the availability of multiple mental health prevention and promotion programs for children, challenges related to their dissemination limit their reach and impact. This review identifies the most common practice elements of effective childhood universal mental health programming for children ages 3-11, based on a structured interpretation and coding of program manuals and descriptions in peer-reviewed articles. Across a range of program goals and targeted outcomes, psychoeducation and problem solving emerged as the most common practice elements, followed by social skills training, insight building, and communication skills.

The free-radical theory of male infertility suggests that reactive oxygen species produced by the spermatozoa themselves are a leading cause of sperm dysfunction, including loss of sperm motility. However, the field is overshadowed on several fronts, primarily because: i) the probes used to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) are imprecise; and ii) many reports suggesting that oxygen radicals are detrimental to sperm function add an exogenous source of ROS. Herein, a more reliable approach to measure superoxide anion production by human spermatozoa based on MS analysis is used.

It has recently been suggested that the human sperm genome is highly unstable, which may be a reasonable explanation as to why men, even fertile men, produce defective spermatozoa. Furthermore, an unstable genome may also explain why the semen profile of the same man changes from one ejaculate to the next. Preeclampsia is a placentally induced hypertensive disorder of pregnancy that is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality to mothers and fetuses. Clinical manifestations of preterm preeclampsia result from excess circulating soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor FLT1 (sFLT1 or sVEGFR1) of placental origin. Here we identify short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that selectively silence the three sFLT1 mRNA isoforms primarily responsible for placental overexpression of sFLT1 without reducing levels of full-length FLT1 mRNA.

These three related studies created a set of ecologically valid scenarios for assessing relative associations of both attraction and sexual coercion risk-recognition in college women's heterosocial situational drinking decisions. The first study constructed nine scenarios using input from heterosexual drinking women in the age cohort (18-30) most likely to experience alcohol-related sexual coercion. In the second study, 50 female undergraduates (ages 18-25) assessed the salience of three important dimensions (attraction, risk, and realism) in these scenarios.
