Objective: This study investigates gender differences in the effect of parents' deaths on sibling tension among bereaved adult children.

Background: Previous scholarship on adult sibling relations following the deaths of parents presents inconsistent results. These disparate findings may stem from past studies not taking into consideration the gender of both the deceased parent and the bereaved child.

Objectives: The intergenerational stake hypothesis and theories of the life course posit that older generations are invested in the well-being of younger generations. Consistent with this, previous research has shown that adult children's problems are associated with worse parental well-being. Because multigenerational ties have become increasingly important in the 21st century, we propose that adult grandchildren's problems may also impact grandparents' well-being.

Drawing from theories of affect, role strain and stress processes, we studied the impact of raising grandchildren on older mothers' relationships with the adult offspring whose children they raised, with particular attention to how these patterns differ by race and ethnicity. We used mixed-methods data collected from 531 older mothers regarding their relationships with 1935 of their adult children as part of the Within-Family Differences Study. Multilevel regression analyses showed that raising grandchildren was associated with greater mother-adult child closeness in Black families; however, in White families, raising grandchildren was associated with greater mother-adult child conflict.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates loneliness and social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on age differences and how they may vary by region and time within the first year of the crisis.
  • Data from four studies with a total of 1,307 participants were analyzed using common variables and statistical methods to explore how social interactions influenced feelings of loneliness, particularly considering age as a factor.
  • Results showed that social interactions were generally linked to lower loneliness levels, with consistent patterns observed across different pandemic phases; importantly, no significant age-related differences were found in these associations.

Objectives: A growing body of literature documents a positive association between adult children's education and older parents' health, and existing studies have identified social support, social influence, and material transfers as factors linking adult children's education and various dimensions of older parents' health. The present study joins this literature by assessing adult children's problems as mechanisms that may underlie disparities in psychological well-being between mothers whose adult children have completed higher and lower levels of education.

Methods: Using 2 waves of longitudinal data collected in 2001-2003 and 2008-2011 from 400 mothers aged 73-85 years at the second wave as part of the Within-Family Differences Study, we examine the role of adult children's problems in mediating the association between adult children's education and mothers' depressive symptoms.

Hearing loss is not unique to humans and is experienced by all animals in the face of wild and eclectic differences in ear morphology. Here, we exploited the high throughput and accessible tympanal ear of the desert locust, to rigorously quantify changes in the auditory system due to noise exposure and age. In this exploratory study, we analyzed tympanal displacements, morphology of the auditory Müller's organ and measured activity of the auditory nerve, the transduction current, and electrophysiological properties of individual auditory receptors.

Crossovers (COs) ensure accurate chromosome segregation during meiosis while creating novel allelic combinations. Here, we show that allotetraploid (AABB) durum wheat ( ssp. ) utilizes two pathways of meiotic recombination.

Article Synopsis
  • Recreational fisheries are worth $190 billion globally, with inland systems being the main source for anglers, especially in developed countries.
  • Despite being resilient, these fisheries are increasingly vulnerable to environmental changes, leading to potential overharvest and collapse.
  • A 28-year study of walleye fisheries in northern Wisconsin showed that while harvest levels remained stable, the production and biomass of fish stocks declined, resulting in around 40% of populations being overharvested, indicating a need for management adjustments.

The Gradiflow technology, originally designed to carry out binary, size-based and charge sign-based electrophoretic protein separations, has been extended to simultaneously obtain multiple protein fractions from a single electrophoretic separation. The separation unit of the new apparatus houses the anode and cathode compartments and up to twelve shallow separation compartments through which the background electrolyte solution that contains the separated protein fractions is recirculated. The separation compartments are formed from grids as thin as 1.

The Gradiflow BF200 preparative electrophoretic unit (Gradipore), which has been developed for size-based and charge-sign-based protein separations and in which the hydraulic flow path of the recirculating sample stream in the separation cartridge is orthogonal to the electric field, has been modified to carry out binary protein separations using the principles of isoelectric trapping. The disposable separation cartridge contained three isoelectric membranes which, along with the cartridge holder, formed the anode and cathode compartments and the anodic and cathodic separation compartments. The utility of the modified instrument was demonstrated by effecting a binary separation of chicken egg white across an isoelectric point 5.

The electrophoretic transfer of purified proteins has been examined in a Gradiflow "Babyflow BF100" unit. A number of factors affect protein separation within this preparative electrophoresis system. We established that the rate of protein transfer was proportional to the applied voltage.

Background: There is some debate in the literature over the proper approach to the patient with a mildly abnormal cervical cytologic finding. One current approach for handling low-grade cytologic abnormalities is to perform colposcopy and biopsy if atypia, human papillomavirus (HPV) changes, or mild dysplasia is noted on cytologic examination. If a Papanicolaou (Pap) smear shows inflammation without atypia, the test is repeated after 3 months, and if inflammation does not clear, colposcopy is performed.
