Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a relatively rare syndrome characterized by excessive stretching of the skin and joints and hemorrhage and increased tissue fragility due to abnormal collagen. Particularly, vascular type EDS has been associated with type III collagen-rich aorta and intestinal tract fragility, owing to which young people are at a risk of spontaneous arterial rupture, aneurysm, aortic dissection, and gastrointestinal perforation. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is a nuclear receptor and the molecular target of thiazolidinedione-class antidiabetic drugs. It has been reported that the loss of function R288H mutation in the human PPARγ ligand-binding domain (LBD) may be associated with the onset of colon cancer. Mefenamic acid (MFA), one of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), sometimes causes liver injury. Quinoneimines formed by cytochrome P450 (CYP)-mediated oxidation of MFA are considered to be causal metabolites of the toxicity and are detoxified by glutathione conjugation. A previous study reported that NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) can reduce the quinoneimines, but NQO1 is scarcely expressed in the human liver.

The diversity of cultivable methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) in the rice paddy field ecosystem was investigated by combined culture-dependent and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques. Seven microsites of a Japanese rice paddy field were the focus of the study: floodwater, surface soil, bulk soil, rhizosphere soil, root, basal stem of rice plant, and rice stumps of previous harvest. Based on pmoA gene analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), four type I, and nine type II MOB isolates were obtained from the highest dilution series of enrichment cultures.

We report the experimentally determined phase diagram for an aqueous solution of isotactic-rich poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAM) composed of the sol-gel transition curve and the cloud-point curve. The meso diad content of isotactic-rich PNiPAM is 64%, and it is soluble in water at low temperatures, but undergoes a sol-to-gel transition with increasing temperature in the investigated concentration range of 1.8 wt.

Cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix (ECM) plays vital roles in both morphogenesis and regulation of gene expression in cells of adult organisms. How intracellular, cytoskeletal, and signaling factors connect and communicate with the ECM is a fundamental question. Using a cDNA microarray analysis, we identified phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI[4,5]P2) phosphatase mRNA as being up-regulated in hepatocytes cultured on a basement membrane matrix, Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) gel, which led to the finding that the PI(4,5)P2 levels of hepatocytes decreased on EHS gel.

Objectives: To evaluate prophylactic effects of bisphosphonate (BP) on skeletal lesions induced by prostate cancer (CaP).

Methods: Incadronate, a third-generation BP, was administered weekly for 4 weeks, with or without 4-week pre-administration, to rats whose calvaria had been inoculated with syngeneic CaP tissue.

Results: The transplanted CaP grew up and caused bone resorption with osteoblastic changes regardless of incadronate treatment.

Possible effects of 1439 MHz electromagnetic near field (EMF) exposure on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) were investigated using immature (4 weeks old) and young (10 weeks old) rats, equivalent in age to the time when the BBB development is completed and the young adult, respectively. Alteration of BBB related genes, such as those encoding p-glycoprotein, aquaporin-4, and claudin-5, was assessed at the protein and mRNA levels in the brain after local exposure of the head to EMF at 0, 2, and 6 W/kg specific energy absorption rates (SARs) for 90 min/day for 1 or 2 weeks. Although expression of the 3 genes was clearly decreased after administration of 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) as a positive control, when compared with the control values, there were no pathologically relevant differences with the EMF at any exposure levels at either age.
