We have developed a one-credit semester-long research experience for undergraduate students that involves the use of CRISPR/Cas9 to edit genes in zebrafish. The course is available to students at all stages of their undergraduate training and can be taken up to four times. Students select a gene of interest to edit as the basis of their semester-long project.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMT) are a rare neoplasm oftentimes associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO). The non-specific presentation and symptoms of these pathologies make them difficult to diagnose. We report a case of a 52-year-old patient with an intermetatarsal phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor who presented to the orthopedic sports medicine clinic with metabolic deficiencies and bilateral subtrochanteric cortical stress fractures indicative of osteomalacia.

The number of clinical trials using human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC)-both embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells (hESC/iPSC)-has expanded in the last several years beyond expectations. By the end of 2021, a total of 90 trials had been registered in 13 countries with more than 3000 participants. In 2016, 10 universities launched a Networked Improvement Community (NIC) aimed at increasing the number of scholars from Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) populations entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty careers. NICs bring together stakeholders focused on a common goal to accelerate innovation through structured, ongoing intervention development, implementation, and refinement. We theorized a NIC organizational structure would aid understandings of a complex problem in different contexts and accelerate opportunities to develop and improve interventions to address the problem.

Studying spin-momentum correlations in hadronic collisions offers a glimpse into a three-dimensional picture of proton structure. The transverse single-spin asymmetry for midrapidity isolated direct photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200  GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because direct photons in particular are produced from the hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force, this measurement is a clean probe of initial-state spin-momentum correlations inside the proton and is in particular sensitive to gluon interference effects within the proton.

The use of an authentic RNA template is critical to advance the fundamental knowledge of viral RNA synthesis that can guide both mechanistic discovery and assay development in virology. The RNA template of nonsegmented negative-sense (NNS) RNA viruses, such as the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), is not an RNA molecule alone but rather a nucleoprotein (N) encapsidated ribonucleoprotein complex. Despite the importance of the authentic RNA template, the generation and assembly of such a ribonucleoprotein complex remain sophisticated and require in-depth elucidation.

Case: An 8-year-old girl was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the distal femur. She underwent chemotherapy and wide resection with implantation of a noninvasive electromagnetic expandable distal femur prosthesis. Ninety-three days after chemotherapy, she developed anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy with heart failure for which a ventricular assist device was placed.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common genetic haematological disorder. The availability of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) is predicted to increase uptake of prenatal diagnosis for SCD, as it has no perceived procedure-related miscarriage risk. Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a benign, poorly demarcated, unencapsulated hamartoma contiguous with surrounding fat. This case highlights pronounced bony remodeling and muscle atrophy associated with FHI in a 6-week-old girl. Emphasis is placed on pathologic diagnosis and mechanisms, treatment considerations, and the multidisciplinary approach utilized in the management of the disorder.
