Oncology Products in the European Union: An Analysis of Regulatory Approvals with a CHMP Oral Explanation.

Background: The oral explanation (OE) is a critical event during new marketing authorisation procedures in the European Union (EU). The primary objective of the present study was to investigate how many procedures, having an OE in front of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), resulted in a regulatory approval for oncology products.

Methods: Procedures for new marketing authorisation applications (MAAs) and Type II variations (new indication) for oncology products with at least one OE (with or without a Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) meeting) and for which the outcome took place between 31 January 2016 to 31 January 2020 were included in the analysis.

Genetic drift during the spread phase of a biological invasion.

Recent theoretical and experimental models have revealed the role played by evolution during species spread, and in particular have questioned the influence of genetic drift at range edges. By investigating the spread of an aquatic invader in patchy habitats, we quantified genetic drift and explored its consequences for genetic diversity and fitness. We examined the interplay of gene flow and genetic drift in 36 populations of the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, in a relatively recently invaded wetland area (30 years, Brière, northwest France).

[Considerations on liver transplantation in the alcoholic patients].

In Belgium as in many other countries, alcohol is one of the leading causes of adult liver transplantation. Liver transplantation for terminal liver failure due to excessive alcohol intake raises clear ethical issues concerning the use of grafts to save patients suffering from a self-inflecting affection. Alcoholic liver disease is one of the best indications for liver transplantation, with excellent results in terms of length of survival and post transplantation quality of life, if this transplantation is proposed by a multidisciplinary team in a patient able to and helped by a supporting family and social environment.

[Alcoholic hepatitis].

Alcoholic hepatitis is a syndrome defined primarily by the clinical onset of jaundice in patients with a concomitant heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages. This pathology is managed by alcohol withdrawal with a 30-day survival rate of 90 %. For patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis, with a Maddrey score greater than 32 (taking into account bilirubin and prothrombin time), treatment with corticosteroids is discussed provided that a possible infection can be sufficiently excluded or adequately managed.

Evaluation of mastectomy with immediate autologous latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction following neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy: A single institution study of 111 cases of invasive breast carcinoma.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate morbidity and patient satisfaction following surgically treated skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) with immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) following mastectomy with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT), and preoperative radiotherapy (RT), for operable invasive breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective single-institution study included 111 patients who underwent a mastectomy with IBR after RT and/or NACT for invasive breast carcinoma at the Institut de Cancérologie de l'Ouest Paul Papin from January 1997 to January 2012. Only patients with breast reconstruction by autologous latissimus dorsi flap with (LDI) or without (ALD) implant were considered.

Background: Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and complete surgical removal of the tumor, in relapsing patients may provide a clinical benefit. There is no consensus considering the place of HIPEC for patients who had first ovarian cancer relapse. To assess for possible efficacy of HIPEC on overall survival (OS) rates in this situation, we performed a multi-institutional study.

Differential cellular gene expression in duck trachea infected with a highly or low pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus.

Background: Avian influenza A (AI) viruses of subtypes H5 can cause serious disease outbreaks in poultry including panzootic due to H5N1 highly pathogenic (HP) viruses. These viruses are a threat not only for animal health but also public health due to their zoonotic potential. The domestic duck plays a major role in the epidemiological cycle of influenza virus subtypes H5 but little is known concerning host/pathogen interactions during influenza infection in duck species.

Pseudorabies virus is the causative agent of Aujeszky's disease, one of the OIE listed diseases that mainly affects swine, but also can affect other animal species, and which can lead to heavy economic losses in pig industry. This study was designed to evaluate the performance of the ADIAVET(®) PRV REALTIME kit, a new commercial real time PCR kit for Pseudorabies virus genome detection developed by the French manufacturer Adiagène. It can be used on pig biological samples such as nasal swab supernatant, tonsil, brain or lung samples, or on samples from other susceptible animals, such as domestic carnivores.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) is involved in several diseases named porcine circovirus-associated diseases and is transmitted by oro-faecal route. In this study we inoculated porcine-circovirus free piglets by mucosal routes (intratracheal or oro-nasal routes) with a plasmid carrying two copies of PCV-2 genomic DNA and compared the results to the intramuscular route. We observed that this PCV-2 naked DNA serves as template for viral replication and infectious PCV-2 particles are detected in the whole body after parenteral (intramuscular) or mucosal (intratracheal or oro-nasal) delivery.

Temperature sensitivity on growth and/or replication of H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2 influenza A viruses isolated from pigs and birds in mammalian cells.

Influenza A viruses have been isolated from a wide range of animal species, aquatic birds being the reservoir for their genetic diversity. Avian influenza viruses can be transmitted to humans, directly or indirectly through an intermediate host like pig. This study aimed to define in vitro conditions that could prove useful to evaluate the potential of influenza viruses to adapt to a different host.

Individual risk factors for Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) in pigs: a hierarchical Bayesian survival analysis.

Risk factors for Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) at the pig level were identified using data from a longitudinal study in seven PMWS-affected farms in France. In each farm, a representative sample of 120 pigs (180 in one farm) was randomly selected after farrowing and followed from birth to slaughter. Individual information included serological status for Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV-2), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus, and Porcine Parvovirus (PPV), individual weight, rearing conditions, and clinical observations recorded at 7, 13, 16 and 21 weeks of age and at slaughter.

Quaterthiophenes with terminal indeno[1,2-b]thiophene units as p-type organic semiconductors.

Quaterthiophenes 4T, Oct-4T, and Tol-4T based on a central 2,2'-bithiophene core alpha,omega-terminated with 4,4-unsubstituted and 4,4-disubstituted n-octyl or p-tolyl indeno[1,2-b]thiophene have been synthesized by Stille or Miyaura-Suzuki couplings. Compound 4T was also synthesized by an alternative route involving a soluble precursor bearing solubilizing trimethylsilyl groups which have been eliminated in the last step. The electronic properties of the compounds have been analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus septicaemia in an asplenic patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Asplenic patients are highly susceptible to infections with encapsulated bacteria such as Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a gram negative bacillus which is a commensal organism in cat and dog saliva. We describe the first case of septic shock due to C canimorsus infection occurring in a 51-year-old woman with functional asplenism related to systemic lupus erythematosus with antiphospholipid antibodies. Because of the potential severity of this infection, physicians have to be aware of its occurrence in lupus patients.
