Impairment of perioperative activities of daily living is associated with poor prognosis following pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer.

Purpose: It has reported that the prevalence of frailty in patients with pancreatic cancer is 45%. The number of patients with pancreatic cancer is increasing, and within this cohort, patients often suffer from impaired activities of daily living (ADLs). This study aimed to examine the association between perioperative Barthel Index (BI) scores, a validated measure of ADLs, and survival outcomes after pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer.

Laparoscopic versus open abdominal lymph node dissection for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a propensity score matching analysis.

Purpose: To compare the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic and open abdominal lymph node dissection using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis.

Methods: The subjects of this retrospective analysis were 459 patients who underwent curative resection for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) between May, 2005 and December, 2019, at our hospital. Patients were divided into two groups: the Laparoscopic (Lap group) and the Open (Open group).

Patient vulnerability is associated with poor prognosis following upfront hepatectomy for colorectal liver metastasis.

Background: With the rapid aging of populations worldwide, the number of vulnerable patients with liver metastasis from colorectal cancer has increased. This study aimed to examine the association between vulnerability and clinical outcomes in patients with colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM).

Methods: Consecutive 101 patients undergoing upfront hepatectomy for CRLM between 2004 and 2020 were included.

Prognostic value of F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in the bone marrow on pretreatment positron emission tomography/computed tomography in patients with esophageal cancer who underwent esophagectomy.

Background: Increased F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the bone marrow (BM) on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) clinically reflects increased BM metabolism owing to systemic inflammation, bacterial infection, anemia, and cytokine-producing tumors. The association between FDG uptake in the BM and prognosis after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer has not been investigated.

Methods: This study included 651 patients who underwent PET/CT before any treatment and McKeown esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between June 2007 and August 2021.

Risk factors for lymph node metastasis in patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Background: Although PNENs generally have a better prognosis than pancreatic cancers, some PNENs display malignant behavior including lymph node (LN) metastasis. Complete tumor resection can be the only potentially curative treatment for patients with resectable PNENs. However, the indications for LN dissection are still controversial.

A case of primary carcinosarcoma of the liver with combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma.

Primary carcinosarcoma of the liver is extremely rare. Here, we report an unusual case of carcinosarcoma of the liver containing combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. A 66-year-old man with a history of viral hepatitis B was admitted for investigation of multiple liver masses.

Colon cancer metastasis mimicking a hilar cholangiocarcinoma: a case report and literature review.

Background: An accurate diagnosis of the primary cancer or metastatic tumor is quite important because misdiagnosis may lead to the selection of incorrect adjuvant therapy and worse long-term outcomes after surgery. Here, we present a rare case with an unusual metastatic pattern mimicking a hilar cholangiocarcinoma originated from colon cancer CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of an upper bile duct stenosis. He had the past history of the sigmoidectomy for the primary colon cancer and the partial hepatectomy with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for synchronous liver metastases 4 years ago.
