Primary biliary cirrhosis and ulcerative colitis are two diseases with many features of autoimmunity. Thirteen cases of coexistence of the two diseases have been reported in the literature so far. Patients are usually younger and more often males than the ordinary primary biliary cirrhosis patient, while the colitis is mild and easily controllable.

Three of them (patients 1, 2, and 4) developed portal hypertension and ascites without histological evidence of cirrhosis in liver biopsy. The remaining patient (patient 3) had severe bone lesions with multiple vertebral fractures.
