Background: Type 1 and type 2 diabetes during pregnancy requires intensive glucose monitoring to ensure optimal health outcomes for mothers and infants. Standard practice includes patients monitoring their glucose four to six times a day using a standard glucometer and paper diary. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) offers an alternative method for diabetes management.

Due to their extraordinary mechanical strength and electrical and thermal conductivities, graphene fibers and their derivatives have been widely utilized in various functional applications. In this work, we report the synthesis of a three-dimensional (3D) hollow reduced graphene oxide tube assembly (HrGOTA) using the same wet spinning method as graphene fibers. The HrGOTA has high thermal conductivity and displays the unique capability of encapsulating phase change materials for effective solar-thermal energy conversion.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study in central Pennsylvania investigated the effects of low-dose naltrexone (LDN) on anxiety and depression in PwMS during the early months of COVID-19.
  • * Results showed that PwMS on LDN reported significantly lower anxiety and depression scores compared to those on standard oral disease-modifying therapies, indicating LDN may be a helpful treatment option.

In vitro biomarkers to assess cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator activity are desirable for precision modulator selection and as a tool for clinical trials. Here, we describe an organoid swelling assay derived from human nasal epithelia using commercially available reagents and equipment and an automated imaging process. Cells were collected in nasal brush biopsies, expanded in vitro, and cultured as spherical organoids or as monolayers.

Dysbindin-1 modulates copper transport, which is crucial for cellular homeostasis. Several brain regions implicated in schizophrenia exhibit decreased levels of dysbindin-1, which may affect copper homeostasis therein. Our recent study showed decreased levels of dysbindin-1, the copper transporter-1 (CTR1) and copper in the substantia nigra in schizophrenia, providing the first evidence of disrupted copper transport in schizophrenia.

An efficient synthesis of boron-functionalized cyclic BODIPY-Gly conjugates, using commercially available -protected glycine amino acids and a BF-BODIPY moiety as starting materials, is reported. The existence of two conformers (up and down) is revealed through comprehensive DFT calculations and H and B NMR analyses. The experimental and computational results indicate that all BODIPYs are stable in aqueous solutions at neutral pH and that Fmoc-BODIPY () is more stable than Ac-BODIPY () in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA).

Purpose: Asthma burden affects mortality, morbidity, quality of life, and the economy. Written asthma action plans are standard of care according to national guidelines, but these plans are often not prescribed. The purpose of this project was to develop an asthma action plan application for smartphones.

Objective: To determine if mutations in NELF, a gene isolated from migratory GnRH neurons, cause normosmic idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) and Kallmann syndrome (KS).

Design: Molecular analysis correlated with phenotype.

Setting: Academic medical center.

The healthy adult is the result of successful interaction between the maternal environment and the developing fetal epigenome. The Barker hypothesis first suggested that in utero exposure to the maternal environment impacts adult health and disease. Since the origin of this theory, numerous studies have lent further support.

Purpose Of Review: To summarize current evidence in the association of imprinting disorders and assisted reproductive technology.

Recent Findings: The worldwide usage of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has continued to increase since the first successful birth of a human after IVF. Since 2002, several reports have raised concerns that children conceived by ART are at increased risk of having imprinting disorders.

Purpose: The teratoid histologic variant of Wilms' tumor is rare, with only 15 prior reported cases. We review these and report an additional case in which a cytogenetic abnormality was identified that has not previously been reported in a teratoid Wilms' tumor.

Materials And Methods: A medline search revealed 15 previously reported cases of the teratoid variant of Wilms' tumor.

A technique was developed to size-selectively separate polydisperse dispersions of CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals into distinct color fractions using only the tunable solvent properties of CO2-expanded hexane. This size-selective precipitation of semiconductor nanoparticles is achieved by finely tuning the solvent strength of the CO2/hexane medium by simply adjusting the applied CO2 pressure. These subtle changes affect the balance between osmotic repulsive and van der Waals attractive forces, thereby allowing fractionation of the nanocrystals into multiple narrow size populations.

Between 1977 and 1991, the Children's Cancer Group and the National Cancer Institute conducted three trials of very high-dose methotrexate (33.6 g/m2; VHD-MTX) in place of cranial radiation (CRT) as central nervous system (CNS) preventive therapy, and assessed efficacy, acute toxicity and long-term neurocognitive outcome. CCG-191P compared VHD-MTX to CRT plus intrathecal methotrexate (IT-MTX) in 181 patients and demonstrated equivalent survival.

Purpose: To explore from an ethical paradigm the current research in support of and opposition to imposing caps on non-economic damages as a means of addressing the healthcare crisis.

Design/methodology/approach: A review of peer- and non-peer-reviewed articles primarily covering the period from 2001-2004, which addresses the rationale articulated in support of and in opposition to imposing caps on non-economic damages. The articles are sorted into sections and critiqued: rationale for imposing caps, arguments against caps, ethical paradigms impacting caps, and conclusions.

Unlabelled: A prospective study using a dose-intensified neoadjuvant intra-arterial chemotherapy regimen was designed to improve survival rates of young patients with primary, nonmetastatic osteosarcoma of the extremity. Arteriography was implemented to individualize duration of therapy by serially assessing change in tumor neovascularity. Intravenous doxorubicin and intra-arterial cisplatin were administered repetitively at 3-week intervals until > or = 90% reduction in tumor neovascularity was achieved.

This study investigated whether the opportunity to obtain Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit together with a five-dollar bill increased response rates and questionnaire completion rates in a physician survey involving mailed questionnaires. One thousand, three hundred and fourteen cardiologists, family practitioners, general internists (non-surgeons) and 264 vascular surgeons randomly identified from the American Medical Association database participated. After two, of up to four, questionnaire mailings, the opportunity to obtain CME credit and a five-dollar bill were included with questionnaire mailings.

To evaluate t(2;5) and its variants, we studied 21 pediatric cases of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)+ anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) by using immunohistochemical staining, fluorescence in situ hybridization, cytogenetics, and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results showed 7 (33%) cases with t(2;5), 6 (29%) with variant gene rearrangements, 7 (33%) with uncharacterized rearrangements, and 1 with ALK protein expression but no ALK rearrangement. Among 6 variant gene rearrangements, 1 had TPM4-ALK/t(2;19)(p23;p13) and 2 had inv(2) with the breakpoint proximate to ATIC-ALK and an unknown partner gene separately.

Background: A protocol to treat osteosarcoma of the extremity was developed at two local institutions.

Methods: The study involved a dose-intensified neoadjuvant protocol of intravenous doxorubicin and intra-arterial cisplatin administered repetitively until maximum angiographic response was noted. Definitive surgery was delayed until > or =90% reduction in tumor neovascularity was documented.

Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is rare in children and comprises only 1-3% of all pediatric primary renal tumors. Recently, several case reports have described RCC developing in patients previously treated for advanced stage neuroblastoma (NB).

Methods And Results: Our experience with four patients treated for advanced stage NB during early childhood who developed RCC later in life are added to 14 others in the literature.
