Varicellovirus bovinealpha 1 and 5 (formerly bovine alphaherpesvirus type 1 and 5, BoAHV-1 and BoAHV-5) are closely related and can be isolated from similar clinical conditions, including respiratory and nervous diseases, genital infections and abortion. Pathogens' activation of toll-like receptors (TLRs) induces the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and antimicrobial peptides such as cathelicidins. Cathelicidins are presumed to act as endogenous ligands of TLRs, stimulating, in turn, their activation.

Rotavirus A (RVA) causes diarrhea in calves and frequently possesses the G6 and P[5]/P[11] genotypes, whereas G8 is less common. We aimed to compare RVA infections and G/P genotypes in beef and dairy calves from major livestock regions of Argentina, elucidate the evolutionary origin of a G8 strain and analyze the G8 lineages, infer the phylogenetic relationship of RVA field strains, and investigate the evolution and spatio-temporal dynamics of the main G6 lineages in American countries. The aim of this longitudinal study was to characterize the parasitemia of and the associated immunological parameters in naturally infected beef cows for 10 months. The following groups were established: seropositive pregnant cows (+Preg, = 7), seropositive non-pregnant cows (+Npreg, = 7), seronegative pregnant cows (-Preg, = 4), and seronegative non-pregnant cows (-Npreg, = 4). Several samples were obtained for absolute and relative leukocyte counting, cytokines IL-10, IL-12, α-TNF, and γ-IFN quantification, specific IgG, IgG1, and IgG2 and avidity and DNA molecular detection and quantification.

Bovine gammaherpesvirus type 4 (BoHV-4) shows tropism for the endometrium, in which it causes the death of epithelial and stroma cells. Despite having anti-apoptotic genes in its genome, experiments based on immortalized cell lines have shown that BoHV-4 induces cell death by apoptosis. Stillbirth and perinatal mortality with neurological signs and lesions were diagnosed in two calves following ingestion by their dams of corn infected with Stenocarpella maydis during the third trimester of gestation. The purpose of this work was to characterize the cellular phenotype in inflammatory infiltrates of fetal tissues from pregnant heifers immunized and experimentally challenged with Neospora caninum. Fetuses from 20 heifers separated into 5 groups were obtained. The experiment was designed as follow: Group A, heifers inoculated intravenously with live tachyzoites of Argentine strain NC-6 (n = 4); Group B heifers inoculated subcutaneously with soluble native antigen from the same strain formulated with immune stimulant complexes (ISCOMs) (n = 4); Group C heifers inoculated with recombinant proteins, rNcSAG1, rNcHSP20, rNcGRA7 formulated with ISCOMs (n = 4), Group D heifers inoculated subcutaneously with sterile phosphate buffered solution (n = 4) and Group E heifers inoculated subcutaneously with antigen-free ISCOMs (n = 4).
