Objectives: Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism run an increased risk of death in cardiovascular disease. Long ago, hypertension was found to frequently occur in these patients. The aim of this study was to compare the death risk after surgery for hyperparathyroidism of hypertensive patients with that of normotensive ones, and to investigate relations between variables of cardiovascular disease and variables of hyperparathyroidism and renal function.

The aim of this study was to model the effect of short (3 year) treatments for osteoporosis at different times after menopause on the risk of osteoporotic fracture and to assess the impact of strategies to target high-risk individuals. Treatment efficacy for hip, proximal forearm, shoulder, and spine fracture were computed from the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture in women from Sweden. Treatment that increased hip bone mineral density by 6% over untreated women saved 126 vertebral, hip, proximal humerus, and forearm fractures per 1000 women at the age of 50 years, provided that the effects of treatment persisted.

Background: Improvement of renal concentration capacity was long ago shown to occur after surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Study of concentration capacity is of interest, as it was also shown to be a predictive factor for the risk of death in patients with pHPT, and it affected the risk of death independently of 33 other variables in multivariate analysis.

Methods: There were 98 patients with verified pHPT operated on in the years 1958-81, who had urine osmolality determinations performed both before and after surgery: 63 immediately after, and 35 with mean 3.

The objectives of the present study were to estimate 10 year probabilities of osteoporotic fractures in men and women according to age and bone mineral density (BMD) at the femoral neck. Risks were computed from the incidence of a first hip, distal forearm, proximal humerus and symptomatic vertebral fracture from patient records in Malmö, Sweden and future mortality rates for each year of age from Poisson models using the Swedish patient register and statistical year book. Fracture probability was computed using the Swedish population and cut-off values for T-scores based on the NHANES III female population.

Although pain is a frequent problem among elderly patients, they are often omitted in clinical trials and few studies have focused on assessing pain relief in this population. The aim of this study was to compare geriatric patients' verbally reported effect of analgesics with changes in pain experience rated with four different rating scales: the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Graphic Rating Scale (GRS), the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and the Pain Relief Scale (PRS). Altogether 53 geriatric patients (mean=82 yrs) with non-pathological fractures in 4 geriatric units at a large university hospital were selected.

Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements are widely used to estimate the risk of osteoporotic fractures. In addition, many other risk factors have been identified, some of which are known to add to the risk independently of BMD measurements. The combination of BMD with such risk factors increases the gradient of risk/standard deviation (SD) than that achieved by BMD alone.

This review examines the hypothesis that there are gender differences in the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. Prospective studies of spine and hip fracture risk drawn from population samples suggest that the fracture risk increases as BMD decreases in men in the same way as that described in women. Moreover, for any given BMD at the spine, heel, or proximal femur the risk in men is similar to that in women.

Aims: To find out whether the incidence of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) has changed over the past decade, and if so, to investigate possible contributory factors.

Methods: All infants undergoing pyloromyotomy for IHPS in Sweden between 1987 and 1996 were studied. Using the national patient registers the yearly incidence was determined and evaluated in relation to sex, latitude, urbanisation, and type of surroundings by use of a Poisson model.

Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and type of hip-joint instability and the frequency of hip dislocation requiring treatment in neonates who had been lying in the breech presentation and were delivered vaginally after an external version or by caesarean section, and to compare them with neonates who were naturally in the vertex presentation. Breech presentations without ongoing labour were subjected to an attempted external version and, in cases where this proved unsuccessful or where labour had started, to deliver by caesarean section. None of the breech presentations was vaginally delivered.

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between morbidity from hip fracture and that from other osteoporotic fractures by age and sex based on the population of Sweden. Osteoporotic fractures were designated as those associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) and those that increased in incidence with age after the age of 50 years. Severity of fractures was weighted according to their morbidity using utility values based on those derived by the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

The aims of this study were to determine whether treatments that reduce the incidence of hip fracture might be used in the general female population rather than screening or case-finding strategies. Cost-effectiveness, measured as cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained using threshold values for cost-effectiveness of $20,000 or $30,000/QALY gained, was assessed during and after treatment using a computer simulation model applied to the female population of Sweden. The base case assumed a 5-year intervention that reduced the risk of hip fracture by 35% during the treatment period, and an effect that reversed to the pretreatment risk during the next 5 years.

The aim of this study was to model the effect of short (3-year) treatments with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) at the time of menopause on the risk of osteoporotic fracture, and to assess the impact of strategies to target high-risk individuals. From the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk, treatment that increased bone mineral density at the hip by 6% over untreated women would save 35 vertebral, 62 hip, 13 proximal humeral, and 16 forearm fractures per 1000 women. The number needed to treat (NNT) to prevent one of these fractures was 8.

The aims of this study were to determine the magnitude of the increase in risk of further fracture following hospitalization for vertebral fracture, and in particular to determine the time course of this risk. The records of the Swedish Patient Register were examined from 1987 to 1994 to identify all patients who were admitted to hospital for thoracic or lumbar vertebral fractures. Vertebral fractures were characterized as due to high- or low-energy trauma.

Objectives: The volume of the fetal urinary bladder can be estimated by measuring bladder diameters on an ultrasound image. The calculated urine production rate might reflect the fetal status in compromised pregnancies. The aim of this study was to assess the fetal urine production rate and the accuracy of measurements of diameters and volumes of the bladder.

Bone mineral density measurements are widely used to estimate the relative risk of hip fracture. In addition, many other risk factors have been identified, some of which are known to add to the risk independently of other risk factors, including bone mineral density measurements. In this paper we develop an algorithm that converts relative risks for hip fracture to absolute (15 years and lifetime) risks, modeled on the population of Sweden.
